An image made a year ago showing a Red Deer stag moving in on a hind.
I love that look of concentration and intent on his face. Nothing else existed beyond the object of his desires and I felt genuinely sorry when his advances were rejected and she ran off. He had tried so hard to win her over with throaty bellows whilst shadowing her closely.
She certainly kept him keen by acting mean!
His next move was to urinate then thrash the spot with his antlers, spreading his scent. Successful ? … not a chance. Mating was going to be strictly on her terms.
This photo is from our trip this August to Southern Alberta. Red Rock Coulee is near Medicine Hat. These very interesting round rock formations, sandstone concretions, measure up to 2.5 m in diameter, and are among the largest in the world.
This photo is looking South towards Sweetgrass Montana. Clear day you can see the mountains. There was smoke haze this day from the BC fires.

The red-bellied woodpecker is a common backyard bird found in many parts of eastern North America. It is known for its loud and distinctive calls, which are often heard in wooded areas and suburban neighbourhoods alike. Taken in Ontario, Canada.
Taken at RSPB Ken Dee Marshes. Most disappointing RSPB location I have ever visited. Unbelievably neglected. Should be omitted from the RSPB handbook.
