It's been a little while since I last posted here, but recently I've spent a bit of time in Cumbria in the company of these critters - gotta love Red Squirrels! I'm looking forward to spending more time up there over the next couple of months

The red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) is a large African antelope native to southern Africa. It has a reddish-brown coat, a long narrow face, and distinctive ringed horns that curve backward. Adapted to open grasslands and savannas, it lives in herds and feeds mainly on short grasses. Known for its speed and endurance, the red hartebeest can run up to 60 km/h, making it well-suited to evade predators like lions and hyenas.

Probably the most commonly seen hawk in the mid-latitudes of North America, red-tailed hawks are also amazingly variable in their plumage colors and patterns. The spring 2025 edition of Living Bird (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) has an instructive story on this variation, based on the doctoral dissertation of a student at Cornell. He concluded there are at least 16 subspecies of red-tailed hawks associated with fairly distinct geographic locations, with color variation relating to the habitat (e.g. light morphs in warm climates, dark morphs in cold climates).
