London City Airport DLR Station, London, England

This is a first visit for me to this station. Not the biggest station in the world but very symmetrical and its what I like :-). Had to wait a little while to get this shot as there were quite a few people slighting from the trains as they come into the station to go to the airport, I was quite surprised considering the size of City Airport.

I always really enjoy taking images of something new and fresh for myself so was well chuffed when I come across this station. I slightly desaturated the whole image in post production and added a little bit of green toning and then boosted the blues and yellows for the blue arches and yellow handrails. I think this would also look quite good in B&W conversion.

The only thing that has really annoyed me is in the white part of the glass canopy there seems to be quite a bit of noise. After closer inspection in LR4, its not on the original image that I have uploaded and seems to have appeared on Flickr so I put it down to the Flickr compression algorithms.

When I was at this station and waiting to go back into London I had a random thought on what percentage of the stations on the underground network I have visited. I feel although that I have taken many photos at them I bet the percentage is still quite small. I should do a project and pick one line and take an image at each station along the length of that line, that would be quite interesting.

Anyway, that was my random Monday thought. :-)

Information

London City Airport DLR station is a station on the Docklands Light Railway which serves the London City Airport. It opened on 2 December 2005. It is located on the King George V branch. Until the extension to Woolwich Arsenal, this station was the reason for this branch. It continues to be an important station on the DLR. Trains run westbound to Bank in the City of London and eastbound to Woolwich Arsenal. The station is in the London Borough of Newham and is located in Travelcard Zone 3.

The station (like many Docklands Light Railway stations) is elevated. It is also fully enclosed. There are two entrances to the station and the platforms are connected by escalators and lifts to an intermediate level with a direct link into the airport concourse. Main access to the station for local passengers and mobility impaired customers is by a lower level subway.

It has a direct covered connection with the adjacent airport terminal building. Although the station maintains the DLR philosophy of design, it makes concessions to cater for airport passengers, including a fully enclosed waiting room on the central island platform and, unusually for the DLR, a manned ticket office. There is a crossover west of the station which allows trains from Poplar and Woolwich Arsenal to reverse here during periods of disruption.

MCM BAX19 Constantí - Barcelona Can Tunis

Marienplatz U-Bahn Station, Munich, Germany

Back to Munich now, I have been sitting on this image for a while, when I first got on back on the computer I was not sure if I liked it or not but now I do. It seems to have grown on me, don't you find it odd that your perspective on certain images seem to change over time, sometimes for worse and sometimes for good. There are images I took a few years ago that I am not so keen on nowadays but when you do look back at your early stuff on Flickr or any image sharing facility it does show you your photographic journey. You often can see how your imaging editing styles change and composition techniques get better over time, would you agree? Have you seen this in your photographic progression?

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Location Information

München Marienplatz is an important stop on the Munich S-Bahn and U-Bahn network, located under the square of the same name in Munich's city centre. The S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7 and S8 intersect with the U-Bahn lines U3 and U6. The station is one of the most frequently used stations in the network, with up to 24,400 people transferring and 8,000 passengers entering or exiting each hour. In 2007, 175,400 used the station daily on weekdays, including entries, exits and transfers.

In October 1966 construction was started, finishing in October 1971 as part of the new S-Bahn network for the 1972 Summer Olympics. Until early 2003 there were almost no further refurbishments done at the station. From 2003 to 2006, the platforms of the U-Bahn were widened to expand passenger capacity and were lifted by 4 cm to secure same-level boarding.

Under the Zweite Stammstrecke ("Second main line") tunnel project, Marienplatz station is to be connected to a second station further north, Marienhof, via the enlarged subway access tunnels on the fourth level.

Canada Water Underground Station, London, England

Different POV for me this one compared to my normal London Underground images but its always good for a change of scenery don't you think? I have had this image in my mind to do for a while and luckily I didn't have to wait too long before this chap walked across my frame and the train moving slightly behind him so I pressed the shutter button down and this was the result. To make it even better he was wearing a stripy jumper which contrasted very well with the background, glad he wasn't wearing a red jumper lol. Thank you to who ever you are.

One difficult thing I found with posting processing this image was lining up all the lines, there is so many of them. With the help of the new auto lining up feature of LR5 this did help however sometimes I keep looking at this image and it does not look straight and other times I look it looks fine, does it look straight to you?

Information

The station, which was the first to be designed in the Jubilee Line Extension project, has been described by the Hong Kong MTR's chief architect Roland Paoletti as "the only station on the JLE that has been built to the strict engineering economies of the specification of a Hong Kong interchange station." Above ground, its most salient feature is a striking glass "drum" 25 m (82 ft) across, which covers a deep opening descending almost to the Jubilee Line platforms, 22 m (72 ft) below the surface. This feature was designed to allow natural light to reach deep into the station, a design principle common to many of the stations on the Jubilee Line Extension. The drum was designed and constructed by Buro Happold. It is notably similar to the brick drum designed by Charles Holden for Arnos Grove station on the Piccadilly Line in the 1930s, but is much more oriented towards the entry of daylight.

The drum is accompanied by a glass-roofed bus station designed by Eva Jiřičná which serves as a hub for services in the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey areas. The bus station was designed to fit in a relatively small site between the station drum, the railway's ventilation openings, a high wall and the adjoining tower blocks. Its most distinctive feature is a row of 16 m (52 ft)-long roof spans cantilevered from a row of central columns supporting a 100 m (330 ft)-long glass and aluminium canopy. This provides acoustic protection to the residential blocks and shelters passengers waiting below.

Below ground, the station is dominated by a huge concrete box, large enough to accommodate one of the Canary Wharf skyscrapers on its side. It is lined by a series of huge concrete pillars designed to take the weight of a planned nine-storey building on the surface as well as the roadway and bus station. The station has four lifts and eight escalators with an average rise of about 6.5 m (21 ft) to connect the lower parts of the station with street level. It is built on three levels: the ticket office and shops lie immediately below ground, the two north-south East London line platforms are situated on the second level 11 m (36 ft) below the ground, and the two east-west Jubilee line platforms are on the lowest level 22 m (72 ft) down.

The station was the winner of the Civic Trust Building of the Year Award for 2000, and the Interchange Awards' Medium Size Project of the Year award for 2001.

New spot - here we see TPE unit 350404 passing through Abington on the evening of the 28/6/19 with the late running 1S71 from Manchester Airport to Glasgow

Visiting Abington area to photograph 4S44, but the freight train was terminated at Basford Hall much to my disappointment.

The station building at Nyngan is a good example of a railway station constructed at a terminus or other significant location in country NSW during a major phase of railway construction in NSW in the 1880s. Nyngan is one of the more remote railway locations in NSW but still warranted a substantial brick building which remains highly intact. The goods shed is a good representative example of a standard corrugated iron shed with attached office and timber platform.

The railway station is now used as the ‘Nyngan and District Museum’.
