Location Information

Bermondsey tube station is a London Underground station. It is situated in the eastern part of Bermondsey in the London Borough of Southwark, and so also serves the western part of Rotherhithe.

The station itself was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects and was originally intended to have a multi-storey office building sitting on top. London Underground have yet to realise this second phase of the scheme.

It is on the Jubilee Line, having been built as part of the Jubilee Line Extension between London Bridge and Canada Water stations. It is notable for its extensive use of natural light. The main station entrance is situated on the south side of Jamaica Road. The station is in Travelcard Zone 2.

The station was opened on 17 September 1999.

Like its extension counterparts, Bermondsey station was designed with a futuristic style in mind by Ian Ritchie Architects. Extensively using natural light, it is built in both a cut-and-cover and tube design. The cut-and-cover section is supported by latticed concrete beams allowing light to penetrate to the platform level. The escalators down to this area are lined by flat concrete with a high ceiling to give a feeling of spaciousness. The bored section is encased with metal to keep in line the futuristic and metallic theme of the extension. As with all other deep level stations on the Jubilee Line Extension, Bermondsey station has platform edge doors for passenger safety and comfort.

Aldwych Underground Station (Formally Strand Underground Station), London, England

Logged on this morning to find a nice surprise and that yesterdays photo had made Flickr Explore #2, thank you everyone for your time and comments :-).

Anyway this is another one from my Aldwych Underground station tour. Sadly I did not get as many images that I wanted here due to the short tour time however as soon as those tickets go on sale again next year I will get them and go back and get the images that I didn't get this time round.

This is the Western Platform and is in stark contrast to the Eastern platform (see yesterdays upload). When we went on this platform we were greeted with this and were lucky enough to have the tube train stabled here I was very happy with a tube train here as it adds a very nice perspective to the image here.

This part of the station is often used for staff training and filming for big blockbusters like Creep and 28 Weeks Later. This has the detailed and intricate tiles on the ceiling however bizarrely they only tiled it 3/4 of the platform. When I quizzed the tour guide on it he said it had always been like that because when the station was operational that part of the platform was never used. Some of the posters you see here are left overs from recent films so sadly are not part of the originality of the platform unlike its counterpart, the Eastern platform where you can see relics of old posters scattered around the platform.

Again I had to wait to get this image but so happy that I did as next time I go the tube train may not be there again. I could have spent all day down here in this Underground station ;-).

Information

Aldwych is a closed London Underground station in the City of Westminster, originally opened as Strand in 1907. It was the terminus and only station on the short Piccadilly line branch from Holborn that was a relic of the merger of two railway schemes. The disused station building is close to the junction of Strand and Surrey Street. During its lifetime, the branch was the subject of a number of unrealised extension proposals that would have seen the tunnels through the station extended southwards, usually to Waterloo.

Served by a shuttle train for most of their life and suffering from low passenger numbers, the station and branch were considered for closure several times. A weekday peak hours-only service survived until closure in 1994, when the cost of replacing the lifts was considered too high compared to the income generated.

Disused parts of the station and the running tunnels were used during both World Wars to shelter artworks from London's public galleries and museums from bombing.

The station has long been popular as a filming location and has appeared as itself and as other London Underground stations in a variety of films. In recognition of its historical significance, the station is a Grade II listed building.

Leeds Station, North Yorkshire, England

Moving few stations along the East Coast Mainline and today we are in Leeds. I believe this artwork was commissioned a few years ago to tidy up the old Railway building you see.

Its magnificent and if your at Leeds station go and have a look at it, its something like 46m high and 11m wide.

Anyway, an Azuma service waits under the Leeds owl before departing back to London Kings X.

The mix of modern train and brutalist architecture I really like here.

Have a great weekend all!

Westfriedhof U-Bahn Station, Munich, Germany

Back to Westfriedhof U-Bahn Station in Munich. Slightly different POV rather than the usual that I do. I noticed these cool and unusual looking group of seats (well I thought they were cool) and thought I must get a picture of these. I just waited for a train in the background to make an appearance and this was the result. During post processing I noticed that the chairs are not quite dead centre so it had meant that a lot of my lines are slightly out so I did have to crop slightly which I didn't want to do but overall still happy with the way it came out.

On a sperate note I have got a Hitech Firecrest 16 Stop filter which I am soooooooo looking forward to using down the local seafront here in Scarborough, just waiting for the right weather. Anyone else got this filter or used it? I have always been well impressed with the 10 stop IRND from them.

The View from The Shard, The Shard, London Bridge, London, England

I completely forgot I had these images from my visit up the Shard, sadly I didn't have many keepers from that night due to the dirty glass and lack of tripod which I mentioned in my previous upload from there anyhow I still had a good time up there.

This is looking over to the other side of London, looking up the Thames towards Canary Wharf and beyond. Below is London Bridge Railway station and City Hall along with Tower Bridge. If you spot anything else feel free to tag it. Everything up here looked so small and almost toy like, I wonder what a tilt shift or fake tilt shift image will look like up here.

I do recommend going up here and I hope that they have sorted out all of the problems that I and other photographers had when going up there, after all I took this back in February so it was a while back.

Information

The Shard, also referred to as the Shard of Glass Shard London Bridge and formerly London Bridge Tower is a 95-storey skyscraper in London. Its construction began in March 2009; it was topped out on 30 March 2012 and inaugurated on 5 July 2012. It opened to the public on 1 February 2013. Standing 309.6 metres (1,016 ft) high, the Shard is the tallest building in the European Union, the second-tallest in Europe, and the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the 330-metre (1,083 ft) concrete tower at the Emley Moor transmitting station.

The Shard replaced Southwark Towers, a 24-storey office block built on the site in Southwark in 1975. Renzo Piano, the Shard's architect, worked with the architectural firm Broadway Malyan during the planning stage. The tower has 72 habitable floors, with a viewing gallery and open-air observation deck – the UK's highest – on the 72nd floor, at a height of 245 metres (804 ft). The Shard was designed with an irregular pyramidal shape from the base to the top, and is clad entirely in glass.

Due to late running, this shot was spoilt by the fast approaching white cloud cover, which blocked the sun. It was hoped this shot would have been in full bling (sadly not).

Anyway, here we see preserved diesel locomotive 33012 (D6515) hauling 4-VEP unit 3417 from Derby Litchruch Lane to Strawberry Hill C.S.D (5Z34). The train was captured passing through Draycott in dull conditions on the afternoon of the 6.8/25.

**for information, the 4-VEP unit and class 33 was on there way back south after attending the Greatest Gathering at Derby Litchchurch Lane**

Here we see MAV H-Start locomotive 432 162 working the 15:37 service from Nyiregyhaza to Debrecen on the very very hot afternoon of the 18/8/24. The train was captured passing through the suburbs of Debrecen.

Another experimental spot on the ECML to capture trains. This working turned up just in time for the sun, but I had no idea it was running (photographers luck on both accounts).

Anyway, here we see DB Cargo loco 67002 atop of a LNER DVT with 5Y17 from Neville Hill to Bounds Green, with 91110 DOR. The train was captured north of Huntingdon on the afternoon of the 1/6/19.

Here we see BLS 485001 passing Lake Thun at lunchtime on the dull, cold and overcast afternoon of the 9/1/17 working a RORO intermodal freight train towards Spiez and beyond. The weather forecast for the day in question was for "full sun" and "clear" conditions. This was far from the truth, but once I was at the site, there was not a lot I could do about it :-(

Owing to early running, the sun hadn't quite come around to the nose of the loco on this intermodal freight working from Daventry to Mossend on the afternoon of the 8/4/17. The loco is 66133 and was captured on the outskirts of Scout Green as the train climbed Shap.

Quin locomotives haul QUBE's 1311 empty paper train into Goulburn's Up Refuge. The locos will be detached, the VLs and 1445 detached, and the QBX double refuelled before re-attaching to the train for departure to Harefield in southern NSW.

A first visit to Ghent for trams to be photographed. I was staying at a pastor home who was a friend from a friend. Beautiful city and a nice tramway system, Gent has always been my special city in the southern Low Countries. Here 3-axel 332 with rail bogies still in works car sercice passing St. Salvatorstraat on August 25, 1975. Trams off line 4 now use this street. I made the photograph with an over 40 years old a 6 x 6 Rolleicord of my grandfather and illuminated a 25 ASA b&w film.
