On Thursday May 30, 2019, the Australian travel company Cruise Express began a six day rail tour through southern NSW and Victoria with a mix of heritage steam and diesel locomotives from each state. The tour was titled the "Great Southern Loop". Streamlined EMD 42103 hauled the first leg from Sydney to Goulburn, where 5917 steamer was attached for the second leg to Junee.
These photos show the two NSW locos combining to haul the train, numbered 9S03, south on a wicked and bitterly cold day.
Here we see heritage unit 3042 working its way down from Rifelberg to Zermatt on the afternoon of the 7/2/22.
Here we see the 2nd set of wagons on 6H50 running from Willesden 1-7 sidings to Tunstead (6H50), which was captured passing through Norton Bridge on the 17/6/22.
For info, the loco in the middle of the consist is 66614.
Total Train Length:
20*14.48m MWA wagons =290m (front consist)
22*14.0m HIA wagons = 308m (rear consist)
2*21.35m class 66 = 42.7
Total: 42.7+308+290 = 640.7m
There is a desire to run 750m freight trains with loops being extended to cater for longer trains. I wonder if this was a test run of some sort to see how it would cope on the WCML?
Here we see a very lightly loaded intermodal freight with all the boxes located at the rear, which was worked by 90047 (front) in its new livery and sister loco 90016 (rear). The train was captured crossing the Docker Viaduct in Cumbria with 4S50 from Basford Hall to Coatbridge.
As the day's draw in, capturing this train in good light is getting harder and harder as sunrise gets later. For info, this was the first daytime working for 90047 heading north with its pan up on this train in its new guise.

A new spot for lineside photography - here we see Rail Operations Group (ROG) locomotive 57312 passing through Findern near Stenson Jcn on the afternoon of the 22/1/21 hauling 769944 (originally 319444) as 5Q98 from Loughborough Brush to Burton Wetmore.

Here we see CD Cargo locomotives 230100 (front) and 230105 (rear) on the outskirts of Kurim with a loaded log train heading towards Tisnov and beyond on the 25/2/22. This class of locomotive had never been photographed before.
On day two of visiting Italy, the landscape was still covered with air pollution as can been seen in this shot, which made photography a real challenge. Here we see DB Cargo locomotives 193346 (front) and 193356 (rear) pass through the polluted town of Mezzocorona on enroute towards Brenner and beyond on the morning of the 21/2/23.
This was my first taste of a real Switzerland winter. In deep snow and challenging conditions, SBB Re4/4 loco 11240 was captured rounding Wattinger Kurve on the bitterly cold snowy day on the 2/2/15 with the daily postal working heading south.

Here we see CD locomotive 1216 249 working the 08:45 service from Praha h.ln. to Graz on the afternoon of the 22/2/23. The train was captured passing through Klamm am Semmering.
Pannier Tank 1501 arriving at Bewdley Station.
GWR Pannier 1501 is the only surviving example of a GWR 1500 class 0-6-0PT shunting engine.
Designed by GWR CME Frederick Hawksworth, 1501 was ordered under GWR Lot 373 but completed by the Western Region of British Railways in 1949, after nationalisation.
The cabside of WR steam locomotives bore a letter on a coloured disc: the letter showed the power classification and the coloured disc showed the weight restriction.
The 1500 Class was Red (up to 20 tons axle load) and power classification C. The class was rated as a 4F by British Railways.
The class, of which only 10 were built, used the 'Standard 10' GWR boiler.

Todo el día yendo y viniendo, recorriendo kilómetros sin parar, viéndolas pasar, apeándose y prosiguiendo la marcha, las incansables 447 cubren la ruta ferroviaria dentro de Gipuzkoa en el núcleo de Cercanías entre Irun y Brinkola.
First time of trying this spot in Cheshire, which seemed the ideal location given the time of day this train ran.
Here we see DB Cargo locomotives 90026 (front) and 90020 (rear) head south through Acton Bridge at teatime on the 7/8/20 hauling two short rakes of MK4 rolling stock with the 17:20 ecs movement from Widnes Technical Centre to Wembley depot. The class 90s were on loan from DB Cargo to Grand central.
The ACTARHS special from Goulburn to Orange NSW, met wet conditions almost from the start of today's journey.
Fresh from the RhB in Switzerland after travelling back to Austria by train in order to capture the Saturday morning ski trains. After doing extensive research, this spot was chosen to photograph them for the forecasted sunny conditions.
Here we see 139312 working the daytime Krokus Express ski train from Bischoshofen to Den Haag. The train was captured passing through Kirchberg in Tirol shortly after IC515 passed. A lucky escape.
First European picture of 2021 - here we see SBB Re420 locomotive 420218 waiting to depart from the low level at Zurich station with the 20:04 service from Dietkon to Effretikon (S19)) on the evening of the 29/10/21. On the other end of the consist was 420229, which was also powering as booked.
Passing in the nick of time before a naughty cloud spoilt the party, here we see GBRF locomotives 73965 (front) and 73961 (rear) head south through Draycott with the 11:15 Network Rail test train from Derby RTC to Eastleigh via the South East including Poole and Southampton to name but a few places the the train was visiting.
A pesar de que el día no brillaba, a nivel ferroviario cumplió las expectativas y además era mi cumpleaños y tenía la mejor compañía del mundo!! Aquí una Bitrac con carbón saliendo de la boca sur del túnel de la Perruca, el punto más alto del puerto de Pajares, ya en la provincia de León.

Austrian Crocodile 1020.042 leads the historic charter train from Bludenz to Luzern on the morning of the 29/8/15. Swiss croc 13302 was on the rear of this train pan up. The train was captured in the Rothenthurm area on the SOB railway corridor.

A day trip to Czech Republic from Vienna.to this brand new location. Unfortunately, having just arrived off a local train and about to check out the vantage points, this Regiojet turned up, which was a case of point and shoot as there was no time.
Here we see the brand new Traxx locomotive 388206 working IC1048 from Bratislava Hlanva to Prague Hlavani Nadrazi, which had just the valley viaduct on the diverted route. The normal booked route for these trains is via Ceska Trebova, but that route was closed due to planned engineering work.

For the unit fans out there - here we see SBB unit 560 2xx shortly after departing Steinen on the morning of the 5/9/22 with the 11:07 service from Brunnen to Luzern.
Another vice-unit working in Switzerland on the final day of the winter trip. Here we SBB Re4/4 locomotive 11108 waiting to depart from Basel with ICE71 to Chur via Zurich vice the booked ICE unit, which had been delayed from Germany. Again, no complaints.
Here we see Freightliner locomotive 70008 passing through Mill Meece northbound on the WCML at teatime on the 28/9/20 with 4M61 from Southampton MT to Trafford Park.

During the winter months certain passenger trains which run between Bischoshofen and Selzthal via Radstat are booked to be assisted by a OBB locomotive due to the steep gradients of the line and snowy landscape.
Here we see OBB locomotive 1144 242 (front) and DB Traxx 101 118 (at the very rear) both powering the train in top and tail mode through Eben Im Pongau on the afternoon of the 12/2/20 with EC217 from Saarbrucken to Graz.
