Arvind Kumar, Adviser, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India asks a question during the Plenary: Sustainable Transport for All: Planning for Greener and More Inclusive Transport, taking place during the 2014 Annual Summit of the International Transport Forum “Transport for a Changing World” on 23 May 2014 in Leipzig, Germany.
A companion shot to 'Bright Eyes'. This one is more or less the same, shot a little brighter and edited to have a less gritty feel, but the expression still makes it a pretty non-traditional galm shot.
I tend to lean to exposing things to the left of the histogram (underexposed). Just a tendency I have, most people tend to go to the right and blow things out. For these sorts of studio shots with a lot of pale skin and a white background (specifically a glossy shower) getting the exposure balanced is interesting to say the least, but I really do love the look of a nice, bright glam shot like this.
Shot with my D300 and 50 f/1.4, two SB-600 flashes triggered via CLS. Both with diffusers, one camera right and close, pointed down at the model and the second camera left and high, over my shoulder pointed a little higher.
Editing was done in Lightroom and Photoshop. Basics in Lightroom and then the B&W added as a layer and then removed from the areas I wanted to have colour.
The reason why this is here still puzzles me
Actually it's from the refresh of the Washougal, Washington Safeway grocery store. The floor paneling was off and a random "?" was painted on the floor bear the produce department. Probably shouldn't of told you that. Kind of ruins the whole mystery of it, yeah ... Well... You don't like it, make something up.

One millisecond after this shot was taken a slight breeze emitted from the dainty flitting of a butterfly's wings causing the digital camera to go toppling over onto the concrete below, shattering the lens cap to oblivion.
I have $177 in Paypal. Maybe I should go shopping for a camera in one piece. Maybe I should upgrade the mega pixels. Maybe I should find one that has Butterfly Armor.

Another question is the frame registration. Some say the 120 leader is longer and others say it is shorter than the 220 leader. Since I did not have any 220 film, I cannot say. Let see if we can figure this out... I roll my own 120 film. I have some spare film and some spare backing paper laying around. What I did was run the same roll of 120 film through both the 120 and 220 back. I removed the dark slide and marked the location of each frame. In the photo, the left or blue marking is from the 120 film back. The right or red markings are from the 220 back. I lined up the start marking of the 120 film with the red start marker on both the 120 and 220 back inserts.
As you can see, the registration of the 120 and 220 back inserts are fairly close. I would attribute the difference to the positioning of the start mark and the tension of the film. I would say it is quite acceptable and twelve exposures will fit tidily on both the 120 and 220 film back.

Press Release: Craftivist campaign launches after survey shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid a Living Wage
The Craftivist Collective is joining forces with ShareAction’s AGM Army this summer to press UK retailers to pay a Living Wage. The campaigners are coordinating a series of “stitch-ins” at branches of Marks & Spencers across the UK, for crafters to sew hand-made messages onto M&S handkerchiefs, to be delivered to the board, celebrity endorsers, and major shareholders of the British retail giant at its annual general meeting at Wembley Stadium on July 7th.
An online poll shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid staff a Living Wage. (Source: Opinium survey, 12th-16th June 2015, based on 2002 online interviews across the UK).
The first “stitch-in” will take place on June 22 in London at 6:30 pm outside the Marks & Spencers on Liverpool Road, N1 0PR. Another “stitch-in” is scheduled for June 23 in Cardiff, another in Brighton on June 29, and another in Milton Keynes 30th. There will also be stitch-ins in Warrington, Lincoln, and Birmingham amongst others.
The idea of the “stitch-ins” is to show M&S that in addition to major shareholders with billions of pounds under management, its core customer base is also fully engaged and supportive on the issue of the Living Wage, and that they expect the company to show leadership on this basic fairness issue.
Each unique hand-stitched hanky encourages board directors of M&S to commit to paying the Living Wage of £9.15 in London and £7.85 across the UK to all staff. This is a part of ShareAction’s campaign in partnership with Citizens UK to achieve the Living Wage across the FTSE 100 through shareholder activism. Nearly a quarter of FTSE 100 companies have now accredited with the Living Wage Foundation, but no high street retailer has yet signed up.
ShareAction has organised AGM questions on the Living Wage at more than 20 company AGMs so far this year. ShareAction is simultaneously mobilising an Investor Collaborative for the Living Wage made up of institutional shareholders with billions of pounds in British companies, including asset managers, pension funds, charity and faith investors. These large shareholders have written in 2015 to all of the FTSE 100, including M&S, in support of the Living Wage.
Crafters will be giving M&S handkerchiefs with personalised positive messages stitched into them to all 14 board members of M&S, as well as to its largest shareholders, and to the 2014 celebrities who feature in the company’s ad campaign: Annie Lennox, Emma Thompson, Alex Wek, Rita Ora, Dowreen Lawrence, Lulu Kennedy, and Rachel Khoo.
They will also be handing out 250 special handkerchief craft kits with a Living Wage message printed on them to shareholders at the company’s Annual General Meeting, so that shareholders can stitch too, to encourage themselves to support the Living Wage. These kits include an ethical hanky, needle and thread, instructions, and a briefing note on investment risk.
M&S Chief Executive Marc Bolland is paid £2.1million a year. Last year, his company refused to consider a Living Wage at its Annual General Meeting. Later, at a meeting with campaigners, the company again refused to consider paying the Living Wage.
Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective, said: “Marks & Spencer is supposed to be a company with solid values threaded through all that they do, which include paying your workers fairly. We’re sending the board and shareholders these carefully hand-stitched handkerchiefs to encourage the company not to ‘blow’ their chance to support life-changing decisions.”
Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive of ShareAction says: “This craftivist initiative at the M&S AGM is nothing to 'sniff at'. Sarah and her amazing stitchers are devoting hours to creating gifts the M&S board we hope will treasure and remember forever. People adore M&S but they want to see the company step up and become a Living Wage employer. The many big shareholders backing this call know it makes business sense as well as being the right thing to do.”

The Star of India is a tremendously atmospheric ship with a long and storied past. Someone or something appears to remain behind, following visitors and apparently answering questions. But I am getting ahead of myself . . . a little history first:
“The Star of India is the world’s oldest active ship. She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey Shipyard in the Isle of Man in 1863. Iron ships were experiments of sorts then, with most vessels still being built of wood. Within five months of laying her keel, the ship was launched into her element. She bore the name Euterpe, after the Greek goddess of music.
Euterpe was a full-rigged ship and would remain so until 1901, when the Alaska Packers Association rigged her down to a barque, her present rig. She began her sailing life with two near-disastrous voyages to India. On her first trip she suffered a collision and a mutiny. On her second trip, a cyclone caught Euterpe in the Bay of Bengal, and with her topmasts cut away, she barely made port. Shortly afterward, her first captain died on board and was buried at sea.
After such a hard luck beginning, Euterpe settled down and made four more voyages to India as a cargo ship. In 1871 she was purchased by the Shaw Savill line of London and embarked on a quarter century of hauling emigrants to New Zealand, sometimes also touching Australia, California and Chile. She made 21 circumnavigations in this service, some of them lasting up to a year. It was rugged voyaging, with the little iron ship battling through terrific gales, “labouring and rolling in a most distressing manner,” according to her log.” (sdmaritime.com/contentpage.asp?contentID=48)
We were enthusiastic about investigating the Star of India, since she has such an amazing and tragic past. If ever spirits were to wander a place, this would be it. We didn’t have to wait long for the odd experiences to commence.
Layla and I started our investigation in the First Mate’s Cabin while Grant and Brian headed towards the lower decks. Seemingly out of nowhere, a puddle formed on the vinyl mat where the original bed was. This made no sense, considering that there was only one slow drip in the ceiling nowhere near the puddle. As quickly as the puddle formed, it disappeared. There was no logical source for it, and no reason for it to vanish. As we asked our questions, there were occasionally audible responses. This rattled my nerves, since it’s not often that you hear direct responses; but we were lucky enough to catch two on the clips below. I don’t know who or what was communicating with us, a source of frustration sometimes. This left us with the need to return and attempt to retrieve more information. All we know now is that the person responding was not the first mate. Who was he?
We quickly acclimated to the particular sounds of a ship: the creaking, the sea noises, and the night birds outside. I was surrounded by the musty, oily, salty smell of the ship and the ocean, and realized how sharp one’s senses become in the dark. Every place has its own scent, a peculiar mixture of organic growth and human industry, of must, paint, wood and vermin. The Star of India transported me to another reality, one where there was real danger in the everyday life and work of the ship. And then, of course, there is the question of which reality is operating when voices speak to you from the dark. The darkness on the lower decks is all-consuming and blacker in some areas than others, a fact not entirely explained by natural light sources. There is that thick, oppressive feeling that accompanies something strange, a sensation that is now familiar but no less frightening when it happens. It happened to us again on the deck below the Captain’s Quarters, below a staircase. There were footsteps above our head, so clear that we all heard them and had no doubt as to what we were hearing. Of course, there was no one upstairs. That fact never ceases to amaze me–how does this happen? How does any of this happen?
Around the time of the footsteps, I noticed that the area in front of me seemed alive with some kind of energy, and I instinctively moved forward (this is a change from the early days of ghost hunting, when I would have instinctively moved away). At that moment, I heard a slide and a tremendous crash. It was so startling, that I screamed for only the second time during an investigation. After I recovered from the shock, we quickly confirmed that we had all heard the same thing. It almost goes without saying that nothing was out of place, nothing had fallen, and that no known source of the crash could be identified.
We continued to have odd experiences on the ship that night. It seemed, once again, that something inanimate had come alive. Equally odd was how quickly the activity shut itself off–near the end of our stay there seemed to be a clear disappearance of paranormal activity: it stopped as quickly as it had started. I am always amazed how that works: you feel tremendous movement and energy all around you as you walk into a place, and then later, at some random point in the evening, it simply vanishes. Why?
The Star of India left us with at least two amazing audio clips and several personal experiences shared by the entire group. The haunted history of the ship matched our experience: the man who committed suicide in the First Mate’s Cabin may not have been the spirit communicating with us, but something was still in that room as other reports confirm. The footsteps on the lower deck match up to numerous reports from the same area. The crashes and other unexplained noises have a long history of scaring visitors.
We can’t confirm who might have spoken to us that night, but there was a clear attempt at communication. As for the crashes, bangs, raps and other odd noises, that might simply be the repetition of daily life at sea: cargo sliding around the deck, materials falling to the floor in rough seas, or even–perhaps–a permanent reminder and testament to the restless souls of the sailors who lost their lives on the Star of India, so many decades ago.

Three hundred Pontypridd students to put politicians on the spot

Four National Assembly Members will be put on the spot on Friday 4 November when around 300 sixth-form students take part in a “Question Time” event at Hawthorn High School in Pontypridd.
Mick Antoniw AM, Andrew RT Davies AM, Eluned Parrot AM and Leanne Wood AM will be questioned by the students – who are from three Pontypridd secondary schools - on topics including recycling, health, the economy, education and the environment.
The event will be chaired by Dilwyn Young-Jones, South Wales Education Outreach Officer for the National Assembly.

ever since i drove out of texas, i stopped shaving and grew a beard. it took me a while to understand why but in hinesight, i came to the realization that i was indeed hiding from myself. it will be two years since the move and i'm just getting to know myself again..as an artist, a friend and most importantly, a father . i shaved my beard in the summer of 2005 and i'm fully stocked with razors though, it may not lookit in this foto
part of the inspiration that goes along with this realization are the friends i've come to know and love not only in texas but in my beloved new home of philadelphia. one friend in paticular, Laura Kicey.
