Bird of the trip! In the sense that we saw them on every day of our three weeks in India, often in great abundance. Also, highly accurate name. This individual was photographed by a river crossing from our jeep in Gir National Park.

We were delighted to see a few pairs of this scarce endemic in Bogor Botanical Gardens, West Java on the 10th September 2018. The males were singing almost constantly and we saw one female carrying nesting material. Sadly its bright colours make it a magnet for bird catchers. Luckily in the park they are protected. We could therefore get good views of them.

Pycnonotus jocosus

A few frames before it landed.

This is the beautiful Stripe-Throated Bulbul - Pycnonotus finlaysoni - also known as the Streak-Throated Bulbul. It is a songbird and is found in south eastern Asia where it can be found in forests, woodland, scrubland and even gardens where it will eat berries, fruit and insects. I spotted this one high up in a tree, where there were some dead branches giving it a good view around its domain, in Khaolak, Thailand.

Food

It eats a range of fruit, petals, nectar, seeds and arthropods, foraging in groups and using a wide variety of techniques. These include plucking fruit from trees and bushes, probing the flowers of Aloe for nectar, hawking flying insects, hunting for spiders on buildings and picking up fallen fruit.

A red red-whiskered bulbul feeds on fallen fruit. Native to Southeast Asia this attractive introduced bird (Pycnonotus jocosus) is considered an agricultural pest on Oahu due to its fondness for soft fruits and flower buds, and contribution to disbursing invasive weed seeds.

Chinese Bulbul (白頭鵯; Scientific Name: Pycnonotus sinensis)

red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus), or crested bulbul .

Taken at Jamshedpur , Jharkhand , India .

Despite its name, the most obvious distinguishing characteristic of the red-vented bulbul is its black crest. It does have a red vent but that is not visible in this image. Photographed in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. More at "Colin Pacitti Wildlife Photography & Fishing Travels" - www.colin-pacitti.com.

Black-crested Bulbul (黑冠黃鵯; Scientific Name: Pycnonotus melanicterus)

The Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus)has been introduced in many tropical areas of the world where it has established itself in the wild. The Red-Whiskered Bulbul gets its name from the red whisker patch located below its eye. This bird feeds on a variety of fruits, insects and flower buds, and often does so in flocks of three to fifty birds.

The Red-whiskered Bulbul is about 20 cm (7 in.) in length. It has brown upper-parts and whitish underparts with buff flanks and a dark spur running onto the breast at shoulder level. It has a tall pointed black crest, red face patch and thin black moustachial line. The tail is long and brown with white terminal feather tips, but the vent area is red. This passerine feed on fruits (including those of Thevetia peruviana that are toxic to mammals), nectar and insects. The loud and evocative call is a sharp kink-a-joo, and the song is a scolding chatter. It is more often heard than seen, but will often perch conspicuously especially in the mornings when they call from the tops of trees. The life span is about 11 years.
