The spectacled bulbul (Pycnonotus erythropthalmos), also known as the lesser brown bulbul, is a bird in the bulbul family. It is known in Malay as Merbah Kecil. It is endemic to Southeast Asia.
Location: Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia
Aliyar, Pollachi, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a member of the bulbul family.
The red-vented bulbul is easily identified by its short crest giving the head a squarish appearance.
The body is dark brown with a scaly pattern while the head is darker or black. The rump is white while the vent is red. The black tail is tipped in white.

During our visit to the national park, we saw this bird quite often in small flocks in the scrubland. Red-vented bulbuls are quite well adapted to various sources of food -- they feed on fruits, petals of flowers, nectar, insects and occasionally geckos.
The tiny red spots at the base of the beak are the most easy way to differentiate this endemic Taiwan Bulbul from the Chinese Bulbul.
