The Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus)has been introduced in many tropical areas of the world where it has established itself in the wild. The Red-Whiskered Bulbul gets its name from the red whisker patch located below its eye. This bird feeds on a variety of fruits, insects and flower buds, and often does so in flocks of three to fifty birds.
The Red-whiskered Bulbul is about 20 cm (7 in.) in length. It has brown upper-parts and whitish underparts with buff flanks and a dark spur running onto the breast at shoulder level. It has a tall pointed black crest, red face patch and thin black moustachial line. The tail is long and brown with white terminal feather tips, but the vent area is red. This passerine feed on fruits (including those of Thevetia peruviana that are toxic to mammals), nectar and insects. The loud and evocative call is a sharp kink-a-joo, and the song is a scolding chatter. It is more often heard than seen, but will often perch conspicuously especially in the mornings when they call from the tops of trees. The life span is about 11 years.
This yellow-vented bulbul (pycnonotus goiavier) had just spent a few minutes splashing about in a deep puddle of rainwater. The sun had broken through by the time the bird moved to a perch suitable for drying out. Photographed in Kampot, Cambodia. More at "Colin Pacitti Wildlife Photography" - www.colin-pacitti.com.

The red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a member of the bulbul family of passerines. It is a resident breeder across the Indian subcontinent, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka extending east to Burma and parts of Bhutan and Nepal.
It has been introduced in many other parts of the world and has established itself in Argentina, Tonga and Fiji, as well as parts of Samoa, USA and Cook Islands. It is included in the list of the world's 100 worst invasive alien species. In NZ they were the target of a successful extermination campaign in 1955, however they are still sporadically reported.

The Himalayan bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogenys) is considered to belong to a superspecies along with the white-eared bulbul, white-spectacled bulbul, African red-eyed bulbul, Cape bulbul, and common bulbul.
The Himalayan bulbul feeds on insects and other small invertebrates, as well as berries, fruits, seeds, buds and nectar.
Nests are usually built in bushes or low branches, are cup-shaped, and made of stems, roots and twigs. The female usually lays three eggs, which are incubated for 12 days. The chicks leave the nest when they are 9–11 days old. There may be up to three broods raised per year. During breeding, adults become very territorial.
