These include plucking fruit from trees and bushes, probing the flowers of Aloe for nectar, hawking flying insects, hunting for spiders on buildings and picking up fallen fruit.

The Common Bulbul is a resident breeder in much of Africa and is usually seen in pairs or small groups. These birds were seen – and usually heard first – every day on our tour of Senegal.

The white-spectacled bulbul (Pycnonotus xanthopygos) is a member of the bulbul family. It is 20–25 cm (7.9–9.8 in) in length with a wingspan of 20–25 cm (7.9–9.8 in). These birds live in fruit plantations, gardens, and cities. It is the most common member of the bulbul family in Israel and Lebanon. In Turkey, it is mainly found in the coastal Mediterranean region, but its range extends from Patara/Gelemiş near Kaş in the west to Türkoğlu in the east. Breeding populations are found from Central and Southern Turkey to Western Syria, Lebanon, Western Jordan, Israel, Sinai and western, central and southern Arabia.

Both sexes are similar; juveniles have a browner hood and less obvious eye-rings than the adults. The nest – a small cup of thin twigs, grass stems, leaves and moss – is generally located in bushes and lined with hair, shredded bark and small roots.

I saw an African red-eyed bulbul in Botswana but this Asian red-eyed bulbul (pycnonotus brunneus) was new to me. It was photographed in Khuk Khak, Phang Nga, Thailand. The main difference between the species is the black head of the African bulbul.

A white-browed bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus) - a very shy bird, though common!

The genus Pycnonotus was introduced by the German zoologist Friedrich Boie in 1826 with the Cape bulbul as the type species. The name of the genus combines the Ancient Greek words puknos "thick" or "compact" and -nōtos "-backed".

Latin luteolus is an adj. meaning yellowish

Didn't have to venture too far to capture this shot, and that's because this 'eye-catching' bird was perched on an aloe plant in the lobby of our hotel.

Also known as the Black-fronted Bulbul.

“Common, near-endemic resident and local nomad in arid savanna, riverine bush and gardens. Occurs singly, in pairs or in flocks; sometimes hawks insects.”
