I've been doing this hike for a long, long time during the winter. Something like 20 years ago I managed to convince my boss and a few co-workers to do it with me. They promptly dubbed it "my snowy death march" and only made a second return visit. One quick note, it isn't a death march at all. Snowy yes. Maybe even a march. But as far as winter hikes go it is tough to find a tamer one. (You don't even need snowshoes). But that aside, I had, in all my years, never timed the hike to catch the lake before it froze over. Always on previous visits this was a big, blank field of white hemmed in by quiet, snowy forests. I was pleasantly surprised then on this most recent trip last weekend to catch glimpses of water through the trees. We had decided to take the long way around the lake, veering off the main road and heading for the old pioneer cemetery before looping around the back side of the lake and coming at it from the opposite side you normally approach. It made for a nice build-up as we caught slices of still, mirrored water that looked undoubtedly cold. And then we turned the final corner with dusk following right behind and twilight in sight just ahead and there was this cold, silent lake drinking in the falling snowflakes as if it wasn't already full enough of water. We lingered a good long while, for when you haven't seen something in 20 years of snowy hikes, it is always worth spending a few extra minutes.

Not sure what prompted me to do this one, maybe the Level 5 water restrictions we now have? Possibly some photos I was looking at the other day. Anyhoo, it came to me as I was going to bed and I just had to work on it the next day.

An entire country, grinding to a halt, waiting for the drought to break. Searching the skies for a sniff of moisture, praying for even the smallest drops to fall. Remembering water aplenty, before the earth turned dry and the disappearing green mask revealed the red dust below. Optimisim that the glittering fields will one day return so that we may practice such harsh lessons learned.'
The background is a piece of embroidery canvas painted by hand (quite literally, I used my hands rather than a brush!) with felt and buttons stitched on top. I don't actually like the red frame, but until I find a darker colour this is it...

Someone mentioned below about the greenery in our garden, despite the restrictions. We made a decision 2yrs ago to stop watering and simply let everything die that required water. We lost a lot of plants, but the ones that are drought tolerant survived, and so we still have a lovely garden. The lawn is another story! Its a great big dustbowl!
The people I feel sorry for are those who make their living out of the land. Naturally the farmers who have been doing it tough for so many years, but also the people who mow lawns, plant nurseries, gardeners, turf layers. They are all having to find work elsewhere to supplement. Its amazing how much we all rely on water...

The only one we had in the kitchen drawer was a clumsy plastic scissor action tin opener, then my wife suggested this one.
It was sold to us a long time ago as a Baby Can Opener. it's only 50mm (2") long which probably accounts for the name.
We did a lot of Youth Hostelling in our younger days and this tool was ideal. It took up very little space in a rucksack and could open tins and bottles, plus it was much cleaner and sharper than the "Bonzer" can openers the hostels supplied. They had been clean once, I believe, but one look at their fearsome blade was enough for me to reach for our Baby can opener instead.
Since it is such a tiny little tool I thought I'd be generous and sketch it open and closed!

A bizarre story:
I took someone elses nonsense prompt and result on Nightcafe and overcooked it at a crazy 80%, then regenerated the result, which I now input here as a seed image together with that crazy prompt at 60% strength, then evolved HD with 40% (since I liked the result and didn't want to change it too much).
It certainly appeals to my surreal taste!
