If you go to Iceland, Jokulsarlon Glacier and Diamond Beach are going to make your eyes pop. Huge chunks of ice gradually break free from the glacier and make their way across the lagoon and into the channel that takes them under the bridge and out to sea, where they promptly get washed back onto the beach. If you stand away from the crowds towards the top of the lagoon around sunset you can listen to the mini icebergs cracking away from the glacier. It sounds a bit like a distant thunderstorm. I could have stood there listening all night.
I had the most joyful couple of hours here, completely lost in my own little Icelandic world with nobody else about - which at times feels like an achievement in the south with its treasure trove of natural beauty. What the picture doesn't tell you is that it was nearly midnight and hammering down with rain while I was taking these photos. But the rain was behind me, and I barely noticed how wet I was getting. The camera, although soaked wasn't affected, but it needed its towel for a good rub down after I'd skipped happily back to the camper van. Just a wonderful wonderful moment in a place that I can still hardly believe exists in this world.
A few hours later, just like in "The Snowman," the ice cubes had all vanished.
