I'm so late.

I actually really hate this photo now.

Over the weekend, we visited this family friend and he and his wife had, like, numerous pets. There was a hamster, a dog, and even MORE fish. There was even this fish that was so fat, it's belly had so much air, it swam upside down because it's tummy kept floating to the top. I kept thinking it was dead, but no. It was just from being fat.

Huh, I guess I really don't hate this photo as much.

I use PicMonkey.com to edit my photos now. Go figure.

My little bit of paradise after a long week of being sick, is sitting down with fresh popped popcorn to watch a movie with my husband.

Early to work, late to see the sunrise.

I always make excuses why I can't take a selfie. Normally it is because I do not look so great that day. Today, I took this one with no make up, no hair done, heck...I did not even have a shower yet. Me plain and simple with no more excuses. Time for evolution.

We were sat on the beach at Milford-On-Sea in Hampshire, throwing stones into the water when my 3 year old son picked up this shell and handed it to me, saying "pretty shell for you".

We'd never seen a shell like this so intact so it was a definite keeper. In fact, it now has its own special display place in his bedroom.

I didn't have much time for photo taking this week - hot weather early in the week meant that most of my time was spent either in the pool or reading Twilight. I haven't put my compact into it's underwater case yet - I really should do that to be ready for the chance to take photos in the pool. The rest of the week was mostly split between preparing bits and pieces for my best friends' engagement party, working... and reading more Twilight. I therefore decided to focus my photo thoughts towards Saturday night's party - hence the late posting.

I was asked to help with the family photos, which I was glad to do - I'm still learning what to look for and how to position people and the like for these sort of shots - I find them hard because personally I prefer more relaxed, spur-of-the-moment sort of photos (for example, as I was doing a speech one of my friends had my camera and got what I consider to be one of the best photos from the night). However, one I did love was this one of Courtney and Rhianna. The two of them just have these gorgeous smiles on their faces and they look so natural in front of the camera, lucky things! To me the photo feels almost like it could be out of a magazine. It was originally a much wider shot which I cropped down to a square (something I don't normally do, but in this case it just suited). I had to adjust the white balance and tone in Lightroom (then the levels in Photoshop) - the light wasn't spectacular, but luckily was really easily fixed. I also added additional lens blur in Photoshop - the not-particularly-outstanding background was too in focus for my liking (it's times like this I wish I had a portable background - one day!). I'm still not sure if it's too overdone, and I'm sure there's something else I could do to make it really outstanding, but I'm not sure what just yet. I'm sure this is a shot I'll revisit in the future.

Yet again, this week's photo isn't what I intended at the start of the week. Initially I thought I was going to do another portrait, but seeing as I did one last week and it was a bit too sunny for what I wanted, I decided to do some product photography instead. I was kind of lazy and decided to leave it until Saturday, when I realised the idea I had wasn't going to work, so I had to come up with something quickly - which was this. I've had this idea in my head for a while - I just love the different colours in the HP children's covers and I thought it would be fun to exemplify them against a white background. Admittedly, it's not particularly original, but I like it. I shot it using my DIY photo box, but since I'd used it last it had kind of disintegrated a bit, plus I couldn't use the lamp I normally use. Having said that, I still got what I thought was a nice photo and figured I'd fix the rest in Photoshop.

The first thing I did was fix the white balance and crop it in Lightroom. I then took it into PS and did lots of playing round with the curves. I wanted the colours to be bright, but the background white, so I crushed both the whites and blacks. The only issue with this was that because my hardcovers have covers on them, they reflected and faded out, so I used the quick selection tool to do separate curves adjustments for those. There's still a few funny spots, but overall I'm happy.

Hopefully this will be the last of the (more or less) random shots - I really want to choose a theme and plan things out more than I have been, so that's my aim for next week.

While reflecting on this week's Project 52 prompt, Anonymous Portrait, I envisioned shadows, darkness, and obstructions. To my surprise, my photo depicts light surrounding my subject in a dream-like haze.

My experience can also be a metaphor for meeting anonymous people, or strangers. You might meet a stranger and expect the worst, but what happens when you look for the light?

Ambient was a ceiling light above.

Two light setup:

430EX ii at 1/8 power fired into 24" softbox from 5' away and about 5' high at camera right. 2nd flash for fill/rim was set at 1/32 power and bounced into a white door behind me. When I tried to have the flash hit me dead on instead of bounced, the light was too hard for my taste.

Triggered using PW Flex TT5s.

Blog Post:

I'm pretty sure this is the image I am going to use for week one for Project52. It signifies what I have to do this week which is write a paragraph that states something profound about me and my photography. I'll add it below once I come up with it. That's about it for this post. Got to run!

Vision Statement:

When thinking about my statement, I kept turning to humor in my writing. This helped me to realize what I enjoy about what I do.

I want to evoke emotion with my work (both in the subject and the viewer). I want to take a subject, any subject, and be able to build with composition, lighting, motion, etc. a strong emotion from every photograph. Many times I lean toward the humorous side and that is acceptable as well. But I want to learn to pull that from the subject and photograph it in the proper way so that it conveys the exact same thought to the viewers.

I didn't really get a chance to go out this week and roam around with my camera... Nevertheless, my Macbook never fails to impress!

low light shot from college on tuesday :)

This shot was originally for my 52 week project, but I rejected them as I was not happy with how they came out, but thought I would post them anyway.

To worry less about crisp focus and to do less post processing! (might not last)

{m4h project 52 // week 2 // imperfection}

my youngest son had his very own language when he really started talking. it was so different from typical baby talk that we often had no idea what he was saying unless we had him point to it. his older brother picked up on his words a lot quicker than we did and so we started making a list of words - just for posterity...and later, it came in handy when we fought with the school system for 3 years to get him speech therapy. I still have this list to this day...he has overcome his speech issues...and we joke about "logan's words" now. it was perfectly imperfect...and something that I treasure about him. he is still as unique as he can be...drives me mad, makes me laugh until I cry and whenever I hear the beatles song "ob la di, ob la da" I just smile and think of him saying a very similar word...as he watched the "school bus" aka "hah bi dah" drop his brother off every afternoon.

Welcome to week 7 of project fifty two.

I take technology for granted. But every now and then, I suddenly become hyper aware that I am actively participating in something so completely bizarre that I become overwhelmed with the awe and wonder of what mankind has achieved. That happened to me the other day while I was talking to my wonderful mother on skype using my iPad.

We started on the PC but I switch her over to the iPad because I wanted to show her the new Ikea shelves I put up in one end of the apartment. I then walked her around, leaned the ipad against a jar on my coffee table and sat back on the couch to enjoy the rest of our conversation. It was that moment as I looked around our living room, with the overpowering sunlight streaming in, folded socks on the table tray with TV remotes... and suddenly realized... here I was, speaking with my mother... LOOKING at my mother on a device no more than a quarter inch thick, who lives about 1700km away, having a conversation as if she was sitting next to me.

How did we get here? How many insane events had to occur to make this possible. And for me to think this was normal.

There will be a day... or I'm sure that day has already arrived, where people won't look at this as being anything out of the ordinary. I however like the feeling that sweeps over me when I come to the realization that I'm living in the future.

And I can't wait to see what's next.

Project 52, week 16, 3/5. O Canada!

The Canadian flag is here flanked by the Québec and Montréal flags.

Absolutely no symbolism whatsoever is intended by the Canadian flag blowing strongly in one direction, and the other two blowing weakly in the opposite direction. Really, none. I swear.

Across from Place du CANADA, Montréal, QC, CANADA.

It's a new year!

In 2014 I started a Project 52. But alas, I didn't make it to 52 photos. I thought I'd give it another try in 2015.

The rules are simple. 52 photos of food that I have made (mostly) from scratch. Most of the recipies will likely come from Food Network Magazine or Bon Appetit Magazine. I'll include the recipe in the description and offer some quick thoughts on how it turned out.

Subject: My Favourite

Claire was out tonight with the girls, so it was boys night in, Matthew, Sam and yours truly. So we decided treat ourselves, a film and popcorn (Dad's popcorn as the boys call it, not the microwave stuff).

So my favourite this week is popcorn, Madagascar and the kids - Dad's favourite.
