Arriving at China Beach parking lot and all the gear thrown out on the ground. Somehow I have to fit all of that gear (for 5 people) into "5 packs", one monster pack for me, one large pack for Kiah, one medium and light weight pack for Stac, a pack for Sofi with a pad and sleeping bag and one tiny pack for Miles with just his sleeping bag.

While I was thrilled -- thrilled, I tell you -- to find a water table for Oliver at a tiny fraction of retail on eBay, I'm pretty sure there was a better way to pack it. I was shovelling those puppies back in the box forever.

Several years ago at the Gem & Mineral Show, I spotted a man with dozens of these boxes -- handmade shipping crates for his wares, stones and gemstones from Madagascar.

I asked him how much for the box and he said something like $1000. I said not the stones, just the box itself. He gave me the "whatever -- you're nuts, lady" look (that look is universal) and said $25.

The interior is lined with newspaper ads for stereo systems.

Which box goes in which room? We haven't seen the new house yet! Maybe we should mark them all "garage."

We finally did it. A neatly packed pile of only a few bags for a trip of only a few days. The trick was pretty simple and pretty depressing. I left the SLR at home, and went with just the pocket sized camera. And shooting JPGs on the little camera meant that I didn't need to bring the laptop to absorb the raws.

this is just like tetris.......homer simpson taught us well.

It's almost time for me to start packing for our return to China. I'm not dreading China, just the packing, lol
