Established in Notting Hill in 1990, Beach Blanket Babylon describes itself as a "club for the discerning without requiring a membership”. In 2007, they opened the Shoreditch branch, which I’d been going past for years (if you’re heading down bethnal Green Road from Shoreditch High Street station you can’t miss it) without really knowing what it was or what it was doing there. Look for stone (not sure if actually stone) eagles on the outside.
Anyway, they invited us along to the launch of ‘Host Your Own Roast’. Which is 50% party, 50% roast dinner. Combining Sunday Roasts and a party (on Sunday, obviously) is a pretty...astute idea that I can't say I've seen in all that many places. Also when it's a party at someone else's place (i.e BBB's place) you don't need to do the washing up. Unless you want to.
Other things of note where bottomless bloody marys (which I don’t really understand in this context but am not going to complain about), the chefs coming out to carve food as part of the demonstration (and as you can see, it was a LOT of food), a lemon meringue pie of legendary quality, and me dressed as a chef (no pictures of this survive)
The shots you see were taken inside the bar/restaurant area - which looks cool as fuck. BBB seem to focus on Modern European/British cuisine and a reasonable selection of wines and cocktails. It definitely reminds me of a wine bar/lounge. On that note, downstairs is a lounge that seats about 300 I believe (it was closed when I visited). I should quite like to return :D
"On Thursday March 24th my best friend and room mate Mitch Dubey was shot in our own home in a completely unprovoked incident, he was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after. 2 Years prior we threw a benefit show for his family after his father had a tragic snowboarding accident and became paralyzed from the neck down. Needless to say the family could use a lot of help in this extremely difficult time. We are throwing a benefit show to raise the funds necessary for a proper funeral as well as honor the amazing life of Mitch Dubey. He was a great friend and an incredible person that touched the lives of everyone that he met. I find it difficult to put into words just how much mitch meant to me, I have known him for over 7 years, the last three of which were spent living with him in new haven. The thought of playing a show without him there still has me in tears but i know that this is the most fitting send off that we could possibly provide. We need to let mitch live on in all of us by honoring his memory and staying positive. We have assembled some of mitch's favorite bands for a night of music that should be nothing short of amazing, please help spread the word and lets do our best to help out the dubey family as much as possible. Yesterday I had a photoshoot with an old pop punk band from South Florida called Own Your Words which no longer exists.
Owning a camera is like owning a truck, by owning one you're automatically going to get a call one day asking for you to help someone out.
This is exactly what happened with this wedding. They needed someone to shoot their wedding last minute and since they are related to my wife, I felt obligated to say yes.
Luckily this was a very fun and fast wedding to shoot. And it was also the first themed wedding I've ever attended. Almost everyone was decked out in 1920's attire, which made it even harder to pass on the opportunity to shoot this wedding.
So tonight I was getting my son's plate ready for dinner my husband offered to cut up the meat for me and I very smartly said "umm no, I think I can handle a knife on my own".
Well I managed to cut up the meat with no problem and moved the plate over a bit which then knocked a very large knife to the floor. I knew it was coming for my poor feet so I jumped back. Apparently I didn't jump far enough....it got my second toe.
After my husband very kindly took care of me and bandaged me up he smarlty said "I thought you could handle a knife by yourself."

A visit to the National Trust property Plas Newydd on the Isle of Anglesey. The seat of the Marquesses of Anglesey.
Plas Newydd is a country house set in gardens, parkland and surrounding woodland on the north bank of the Menai Strait, in Llanddaniel Fab, near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey, Wales. The current building has its origins in 1470, and evolved over the centuries to become one of Anglesey's principal residences. Owned successively by Griffiths, Baylys and Pagets, it became the country seat of the Marquesses of Anglesey, and the core of a large agricultural estate. The house and grounds, with views over the strait and Snowdonia, are open to the public, having been owned by the National Trust since 1976.
From its earliest known resident in 1470, Plas Newydd passed by inheritance and marriage through 500 years of a family's increasing concentration of wealth, titles and estates, until the 7th Marquess of Anglesey presented it to the National Trust, so that the house and grounds could be opened to the public.
Plas Newydd is a Grade I listed building.

Historic Environment Record for H BUILDING, Malvern, UK
The building, having military purposes and designated locally as H building, sits on a former Government Research site in Malvern, Worcestershire at Grid Ref SO 786 447. This site was the home of the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) from 1946. It has been owned by QinetiQ since 2001 and is in the process (October 2017 to February 2018) of being sold for redevelopment.
This unique building has at its heart a ‘Rotor’ bunker with attached buildings to house radar screens and operators as well as plant such as emergency generators. Twenty nine Rotor operational underground bunkers were built in great urgency around Britain to modernise the national air defence network, following the Soviet nuclear test in 1949. Two factors make H building’s construction and purpose unique; this prototype is the only Rotor bunker built above ground and it was the home to National Air Defence government research for 30 years.This example of a ROTOR bunker is unique instead of being buried, it was built above ground to save time and expense, as it was not required to be below ground for its research purpose.
H Building was the prototype version of the Rotor project R4 Sector Operations Centre air defence bunkers. Construction began in August 1952 with great urgency - work went on 24 hours a day under arc lights. The main bunker is constructed from cross bonded engineering bricks to
form walls more than 2 feet thick in a rectangle approximately 65ft x 50ft. The two internal floors are suspended from the ceiling. The original surrounding buildings comprise, two radar control and operator rooms, offices and machine plant.
The building was in generally good order and complete. The internal layout of the bunker remains as originally designed. The internal surfaces and services have been maintained and modernised over the 55 years since its construction (Figure 3). The first floor has been closed over.
There are some later external building additions around the periphery to provide additional accommodation.
In parts of the building the suspended floor remains, with 1950s vintage fittings beneath such as patch panels and ventilation ducts.
The building has been empty since the Defence Science & Technology Laboratories [Dstl] moved out in October 2008
As lead for radar research, RRE was responsible for the design of both the replacement radars for the Chain Home radars and the command and control systems for UK National Air Defence.
Project Rotor was based around the Type 80 radar and Type 13 height finder. The first prototype type 80 was built at Malvern in 1953 code named Green Garlic. Live radar feeds against aircraft sorties, were fed into the building to carry out trials of new methods plotting and reporting air activity
A major upgrade of the UK radar network was planned in the late 1950s – Project ‘Linesman’ (military) / ‘Mediator’ (civil) – based around Type 84 / 85 primary radars and the HF200 height finder. A prototype type 85 radar (Blue Yeoman) was built adjacent to H Building in 1959. live radar returns were piped into H Building.
Subsequently a scheme to combine the military and civil radar networks was proposed. The building supported the research for the fully computerised air defence scheme known as Linesman, developed in the 1960s, and a more integrated and flexible system (United Kingdom Air Defence Ground Environment or UKADGE) in the 1970s.
The building was then used for various research purposes until the government relinquished the main site to QinetiQ in 2001. Government scientists continued to use the building until 2008. Throughout its life access was strictly controlled by a dedicated pass sytem.
Notable civil spin-offs from the research in this building include the invention of touch screens and the whole UK Civil Air Traffic Control system which set the standard for Europe.

1952 - Construction work is begun. The layout of the bunker area duplicates the underground version built at RAF Bawburgh.
1953 - Construction work is largely completed.
1954 - The building is equipped and ready for experiments.
1956-1958 - Addition of 2nd storey to offices
1957-1960 - Experiments of automatic tracking, novel plot projection systems and data management and communications systems tested.
1960-1970 - Project Linesman mediator experiments carried out including a novel display technique known as a Touch screen ( A World First)

RRE Tech Note 721 states: This device, the Touch Sensitive Electronic Data Display, or more shortly the ‘Touch Display’, appears to have the potential to provide a very efficient coupling between man and machine. 1990-1993 - The building was re-purposed and the bunker (room H57) had the first floor closed over to add extra floor area.
2008- The bunker was used until late 2008 for classified research / Joint intelligence centre
2019 - Visual Recording of the buildings interior by MRATHS. Be means of a LIDAR scan and photographs being taken. The exterior was mapped with a drone to allow a 3D Image of the building to be created via Photogrammetry. This was created in Autodesk Photo Recap.
2020 - Building demolished as part of the redevelopment of the site.

Crystal Brook.
Kupsch family owned and run bakery was established in 1963 and is especially known for its pasties. These days their range includes kranskies, chicken and leek pies, sausage rolls and sweet pastries, cakes and Kitchener buns. A possible relative was August Kupsch who took up land at Tarcowie in 1879. Other relatives lived at Laura and at Stone Hut for decades. A member of the family took over the aerated water and cordial factory in Gladstone in 1939 and from 1940 a grocery and confectionary business in Gladstone.
Surveying of the land known as the Crystal Brook run for agriculture began in 1872 but it was March 1873 before the Hundred of Crystal Brook was declared. So high was the optimism that some land sold for £2 or £3 per acre instead of the usual £1 per acre. This was a good windfall for the government. The government began work on the Port Pirie to Crystal Brook railway in early 1874 so it would reach the district by harvest time in late 1874. The cost of this railway was over £28,000 which included a bridge across the Crystal Brook : the bridge was being shipped from England. By mid 1874 local farmers were calling for a town to be surveyed. The Crystal Brook township blocks were sold at auction on 14 January 1875. They sold for between £4 and £52 a block for the 337 town allotments which all sold. The town grew phenomenally fast in the first few years. The railway from Port Pirie did not arrive in time for the 1874 harvest as it took another two years to reach the town. It opened in December 1875 north of Crystal Brook town beside the creek and it crossed the new bridge into the town in April 1876. Its arrival in 1876 sealed a prosperous future of the town. The line was then continued on to Gladstone and to Peterborough by 1880. Many public buildings were erected in the years between 1877 and 1880. Construction work on the first hotel began in February 1875. A general store opened in February 1875. A stone government school was completed in 1877 as was the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Adelaide Square. The square is located at the end of Bowman Street, named after the owners of the Crystal Brook run until 1872 when the government resumed it. Like Adelaide, Crystal Brook is also surrounded by parklands, although these have been used for development in places. In the 1870s SA government towns were surveyed with north, south, east and west terraces and a grid street pattern like Adelaide but only one or two were ever surveyed with a central park like Victoria Square in Adelaide. Crystal Brook, however was an exception as the government had such high hopes for the expansion and growth of Crystal Brook. The railway line divided the town into two parts with the western housing beyond the parkland belt.
The old bakery in Crystal Brook is now the National Trust Museum. It has unique underground baking ovens which were built behind the two storey building in 1881. The fine two storey house and shop in front was erected for Mr Hewett in 1875, the first year of the town’s existence. Initially it was a butcher’s shop but also a bakers from 1881. In 1900 it changed hands and was only a bakery and tea rooms as Mr Hewett opened a butcher’s shop in Port Wakefield. From 1911 to 1974 it was a grocer’s shop. It was saved from demolition by the local National Trust group in 1977. Some sources say it was built in 1870 but this is impossible as the town was not surveyed with town blocks until January 1875 and in 1870 this was part of the Bowman’s sheep run.
Growth of the town was based on its industrial development and the employment opportunities this provided. The first blacksmith was started by John & Robert Forgan who had learnt their trades with James Martin of Gawler. Their Crystal Brook foundry and implement works began operations in 1878. In 1884 the business expanded following the death of Robert. John also opened a branch in Port Pirie in 1902. The firm was still operating in 1973 when the town centenary history was written. The first flour mill was built on the corner of Railway Terrace and Cunningham Street in 1880. The flour mill burnt down in 1905 but the chaff mill part of the operations continued until the 1920s when it too burnt down. It was replaced by a motor vehicle dealership and garage. But the biggest employer in the town was the SA government. In 1885 construction of the Beetaloo Dam, upstream on the Rocky River commenced. The government based its headquarters for the construction team in Crystal Brook. Once this project was completed work began on the Bundaleer reservoir in 1898. This was connected to the Beetaloo system. All the engineers and other workers for water in the mid north were based in Crystal Brook. Next the Baroota Reservoir was started in 1921. The Engineering and Water Supply (E & W S) office has thus been in Crystal Brook since 1892. Since the 1950s Crystal Brook has been the regional head office for E & W S with over 100 employed in the department’s workshops and offices. They are still located on the edge of Adelaide Square. The Highways Department has also had regional headquarters in Crystal Brook since 1943. In the 1970s this department employed 110 people in Crystal Brook. The railways were the other major government employer in the town before the rail standardisation of 1970 which saw the old station complex demolished. Today Crystal Brook has a population of 1,300.
OAKLAND, CA, 03/21/19 - People Power Solar Cooperative announced the construction of its first solar project in Oakland on March 21, piloting a new model for community-owned energy in California. The residential-sized 7 kW project is financed entirely by small investments from more than 50 local community members and leaders -- the cooperative’s Owners -- who have each purchased up to ten $100 shares of People Power. It is the first residential energy project in California to be owned by members of the broader community, and not municipally-owned, as far as the cooperative knows. The model is simple: the cooperative owns the project and will sell power to the homeowner and tenants at a rate lower than PG&E’s. The cooperative will, in turn, pay small dividends to the Owners who helped finance the project. People Power encourages anyone to sign up to learn more and/or get involved at peoplepowersolar.org/get-updates.
This groundbreaking community-owned solar project was built on the roof of a local activist, lora jo foo (foo does not capitalize her name). foo is a retired labor organizer and attorney. She is a native of the San Francisco Chinatown community, where she began working as a garment worker in a sweatshop at the age of 11. She later litigated numerous ground-breaking cases representing low-wage workers in sweatshop industries. She has been active in the No Coal In Oakland movement, helping to stop the building of a coal export terminal on the Oakland waterfront. As foo puts it: “While the work of fighting against the causes of global warming is important, equally important is the fight for renewable energy to replace fossil fuels and who is in control of these vital resources of our lives.”
“This project is more than putting solar on a roof. With more than 50 members of the community behind this project as owners, we are starting to show that solar ownership is about more than clean power. It’s about community power,” said Crystal Huang, co-founder of People Power Solar Cooperative.
People Power Solar Cooperative grew out of a multi-year effort by the Sustainable Economies Law Center, also based in Oakland, to develop a model for community energy that empowers communities to steward their own energy future.
“Currently, more than half of Californians cannot own solar because they either don’t own their home or don’t have the capital or credit. That sidelines a bunch of communities, disproportionately low income communities and communities of color, from the financial and environmental benefits of owning solar”, says People Power co-founder Grayson Flood. People Power aims to act as an administrative umbrella for other groups seeking to create community-owned solar projects in California. It also provides a model for community solar for other states without strong shared-solar laws.
People Power’s website lists partners from other Bay Area energy justice groups, such as the Local Clean Energy Alliance, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network, and Communities for a Better Environment. The cooperative hosted its launch party on December 5th, 2018, at Impact Hub in Oakland.
“People Power Solar Cooperative allows anyone to be more active in participating and designing the future of our energy and our society for the planet. It’s a very powerful, non-passive way of changing things in our own community,” said Brandi Mack, a People Power Owner, national director of the Butterfly Movement, and community designer at Designing Justice + Designing Space.
People Power Solar Cooperative has engaging cartoon bylaws in plain-language to make their model welcoming and understandable, even to high school-age youth. More information can be found at our about page.
After much searching, I finally found this post card from Uncle Don & Sharky, originally of Uncle Don’s Terror Theatre. Dated 07-18-1989.
Rockford's own Uncle of 'B-Movie' horror flicks. Matt Swan added his own humorous spin to some of the lesser-known horror movies. As the years passed, the show’s title was modified; removing the ‘Terror’, to simply be known as Uncle Don’s Theatre. Along with the new name, Uncle Don was able to cast a wider net, into the B-Movie arena, to include ‘colorful’ material outside the Terror Genre.
In the late 1980’s & early 1990’s, if you lived within the reception area of Channel 39, WQRF (located in Rockford, IL.), and tuned-in during Friday & Saturday evenings, you undoubtedly would have witnessed Uncle Don working his craft., along with his enduring, albeit sometimes whiny sidekick Sharky.

I hardly ever attempt more 'portraity' type stuff with my own kids because they are TYPICAL photographer kids who are way too used to having the camea shoved in their face. Went out today and somehow by the grace of all that is holy I got this shot. All I could think of the whole time is that I am sorry for the photographer who is taking our family pictures this year(sorry Tara, they are hooligans...thank god it's you because I think you are the only one who can tame them! hahahaha)...
