Mike used to be my barista when he owned a neighborhood coffee shop. The shop is gone. Our friendship soldiers on. Mike got a little carried away with the clippers while giving himself a haircut. I like it.

Dominoes isn't really taken seriously any more, except in pubs in Scotland. I once won a turkey at christmas in a pub in the Highlands. I don't think they appreciated a stranger walking in and nicking their bird, especially as they suspected - quite rightly - that it was just beginner's luck.
I've got quite a good hand here. There are 7 dominoes that carry a 6-spot (0-6, 1-6, 2-6, 3-6, 4-6, 5-6 and 6-6). Two are on the table, and two in my hand. The 0-6, 2-6 and 6-6 are either in the boneyard or in my opponent's hand. If I play the 4-6 to block off the 4 (which I don't want to leave open since I have no other 4s), then my opponent can play any 6 he wants, and I can respond and be in a reasonably good space.

I'm really good at giving other people advice, but not so good when it comes to giving myself some! This page, prompted by Elsie and Rachel's class, represents some of the advicce I should be giving myself lately!

Bursting on the Lombok scene to rival -- and even outclass -- the once-mighty Oberoi hotel property north of Lombok's capital, Mataram, and the beloved Gili diving and surfing atols -- two new hotel offerings at Senggigi Beach are now sweeping the accolades, even drawing discerning travellers from the mighty tourism machine of Bali -- a mere 35 miles away by plane and boat across the Lombok Strait to the west.
Lombok's * new generation " boutique hotels include the ultra-stylish "QUNCI VILLAS" and its newer, larger and more upscale neighbor "JEEVA KLUI RESORT".

My niece and I took a Sunday drive today and came across this apple orchard that offered "pick your own." It was a fun end to our trip, which also included some steers, turtles, corn fields, ice cream parlor, and a little friendly trespassing :)

'Picture Book' by Karen Ryan 2018
I was not taught Shakespeare at school, my reading age was below my own age.
Very early in my childhood at primary school I was streamed accordingly and allocated a desk at the back of the class reserved for those considered slow.
This degrading isolation continued into secondary school as I was now alphabetically streamed.
I was placed in form class Somerset which did not even have a classroom in the school building but instead a portacabin to the side next to the bike sheds. There were only two forms below Somerset, Wellington and York both of which had portacabins next to mine.
I was only introduced to books that were deemed suitable by the educational system for my stream form class.
I felt the world sharply but did not have a language to express myself, or at least felt inadequate in any attempts at spoken or written communication.
In my own ignorance picture books became my world, they became my teachers and my family in a language of life put on a flat paper surface full of ideas, meanings, emotions, compositions, colours and paint.
Now as I return briefly to the notion of painting in my own work I also return to the remembered pictures of my childhood memories. These pictures are not family snapshots capturing a happy childhood but the faces and landscape painted by Holbein, Picasso, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Henry Moore, Matisse, Bruegel, Lautrec, Bosch, Leonardo da Vinci ....
These have become my own memories and in my work ‘Picture Book’ these memories become characters and landscapes to which I express myself through.
I have not made paintings but painted on pictures to become printed again.
I was diagnosed as being dyslexic in my late twenties.
Civil defence shares best practice
This year’s South Island civil defence and emergency management conference took place at Blenheim’s convention centre on 30 and 31 August. A wide variety of speakers shared their knowledge and experience with 140 delegates from around New Zealand, on the theme of recovery. The conference was generously sponsored by Brian FM www.brianfm.com/
Highlights included Marlborough’s resilient farmer Doug Avery, who talked about his personal journey dealing with repeated natural disasters on his farm, and senior US disaster communications expert Bob Jensen on improvements made to the US disaster response system since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005.
The conference was opened by Mayor John Leggett and Civil Defence Minister Kris Faafoi, who outlined some of the changes proposed to the national emergency management system after the recent Government review.
Marlborough’s own ‘earthquake navigators’ Candi Callaghan, Flo Joyce and Chris Wilson talked about their experiences helping their communities in Ward, Seddon and Kekerengu get through the recovery process.
Each of the South Island’s six civil defence and emergency management groups gave an update on their area’s work over the last 12 months.
