As many of you will have seen I'm painting and drawing a portfolio of studies after Paul Cezanne. This one is a view from a spot where he painted six of his better known works. I based my contemporary view on my own photography from when I was in Aix and my notebook studies.
As one moves on with painting one sometimes has to retrace old familiar paths and not slip into one particular way of working. I have found re looking at Cezanne has helped me link up both with a number of paintings from my own past and also thinking about future way I may decide to work. If there is a consistent factor over the past five years it has been the use of photography and how that has informed my paintings.
I sometimes think Cezanne's struggle with the mountain did influence my own illustrations of 1997-200 (Heartlands) as the same mountain appears in the background of each work. In this instance my concerns were not exactly pictorial but more to do with working to an idea about America. It is funny how often certain ideas come back and indeed painting styles.
It is impossible to think of the history of modern painting without the contribution of Paul Cezanne. Over these past five days we visited Aix en Provence to experience firsthand the places and subjects from which some of his most memorable works were painted. There is a very well developed tourist trail in Aix highlighting some of the most significant places in his life. I was most interested in those that bore a direct relation to certain paintings rather than places such as the school he attended or where his mother is buried . Our trip to the foot of Mont Ste Victoire was a great moment. I tried to record some of these sensations in a series of photographs and also some drawings made in Aix. This series links in well with some of my recent sets on art history and particularly French Impressionism and C19 painting. Aix is a charming city with many fine buildings, but it was perhaps the colours and feel of the place that impressed me most. Alison took a number of these photographs for our diary, this was our anniversary holiday.

Camera Details:
1980-s era QL17-GIII with stuck shutter and stuck timer serviced by Alex Bonarski (rangefindercamera on ebay). Within three weeks he had fully CLAed (including timer cleaning and battery update) , replaced a defective lens element (for which he had spares to sell) and returned the camera with a one year warranty. Highly recommended!

Utata's recent "Public Art" weekend project has me wondering how to capture an artwork in its environs without simply defaulting to a documentary style.
Technical Trivia
Shot with a Hoya R72 infrared filter (720nm cutoff) hand-held over the lens (note vignetting). At ISO 400 and widest aperture exposure times were 1/10 sec and files were extremely noisy. Noise reduction in Lightroom or Noise Ninja was not pleasing. A useful alternative was using Topaz Restyle to replace the palette with one from a green-tinged cross-processed Fuji Sensia image I admire, then converting to B&W in Lightroom. This darkened the white specks in dark areas without consequently destroying leaf detail.

: 先日から、カラー版を出している。理由は、美が安直に伝わるからである。もっと言えば、ごまかしがきくからである。
脚線美がそれほど優れていなくても、色彩があれば、それなりに美しく見える。
とはいえ、だから、一般的に白黒作品が、カラー作品よりも高級であるかいえば、決してそんなことはない。白黒は、思わせぶりで嫌味で妙に気取ったところがある。どうせ、自然は色彩にあふれているのに、それをことさらに（以前は、色彩定着技術がなかったので仕方がなく、今日では、芸術的風を装うために）、白黒作品にするなんて、嫌味であり、才能不足の露呈であり、被写体の形態美が不足していることの、粉飾であろう。
さて、この作品の脚であるが、当人は気に入っているが、細かく言えば、やはり足首から下の足が大きく写る。これは実際に大きいのであるが（理由はご存じのとおり）、私の撮り方が、少し変わっていて、どうしても、床に近い下部が大きく写ってしまうのである。また、足首が運動の結果により、および、体質にもよって、やや細すぎるのが、気になる。足首は細い方が美しいのではあるが、それもバランスによる。各部分には美しい比率があるので、それを逸脱すると、やはりマイナスになるのである。

この作品は、黒いタイツにデニムの半ズボン、オーバーサイズのトップスである。綺麗な脚だと思う。右脚太ももの可愛い感じもよい。
ところで、一般に、写真という技術素材はこのまま延命するだろうが、芸術にはなりえないし、美術作品ですらないと思う。
写真は紙媒体のニュースの花形だったが、動画に取って代わられた。新聞紙を見る人も激減した。
写真の価値とは何か。この簡単な疑問にも、答えを得るのは簡単ではない。
左脚がねじれているように感じられる。それはなぜか。
私が意図的にねじったからである。私が被写体そのものだから、こう答えることができる。私以外ではわからない。
これが写真である。

The busy background made the photo unbalanced with a large foreground negative space (plain white snow). This image was edited in Adobe Lightroom then a cross-processed color palette, derived from an x-pro Kodak E-100 image, was applied in Topaz Restyle. This was chosen because it made the snow appear gritty, like styrofoam, and intensified the flower color without extreme tonal shifts.

I walked through the Walker art center with a slow shutter, where the bright white background makes nice, contrasty , blurred images.
The image was processed with DFT Filmstocks (push processed Kodak Panatomic X preset) to enhance contrast.
The falling snow provides sufficient atmospheric perspective that the closer, darker cyclist is isolated from the busy background.
