A cautionary tale about missing Thursday walks:
I read today, Thursday 12/5/24, that Timothée Chalamet was walking in Dinkytown and taking photos with fans. I wasn't there but could have been if I were joining Phillip Chee for Thursday walking - as I should be. I thought of Timothy's current role in the Dylan biopic "Complete Unknown" and wondered if anyone got his photo next to this poster.
Enjoying the rain while running errands, during a particularly busy month (or two).
A "Daidoish" preset was applied (contrast 90+, clear view 50+, blacks -40 or less, tone curve adjusted to crush blacks and blow highlights)
(Walker Art center, May, 2025)
Processing note: Contrast enhanced with DXO filmpack (Agfa APX20 preset) and a homemade Daidoish adjustment (blacks increased and whites decreased in curves to clip blacks and blow highlights).
My circle of trust always evolves,
The light of some pulls me forward
while others fade in the background.
Around my clear eyes it revolves,
as life spins from black to white
to white and black in rhythms
understood by none but God
(or the chaos from which she sprung).

Relativity - what you see depends on your frame of reference.
Background
A stationary camera shows a static background with a subject changing position in successive exposures. Muybridge's motion studies, in contrast, simulate a moving camera and show an effectively stationary subject against a moving background. These may be displayed as a polyptych or combined into multiple exposures on a single frame. This is a Harris shutter effect variant, turning the moving elements into brightly colored ghosts.
Details
This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Things that move and other differences between three more-or-less sequential photos are emphasized while static features turn black. For this project I warped/scaled the images to maximize walker congruency, allowing the background to lose registration.

His soft voice spanning time
and distance,
Moments of inspiration
And quiet admiration.
A soft rasp adds texture
Lined by a light tension
Of what brought it.
Years ago, this didn’t happen,
Life. Work. Other excuses.
Lost opportunities.
Now time is short. Life, and Work
Are topics, not excuses
In conversations with my father.

A further oil on masonite of Wally. As with the oil portrait of Margaux it was interesting to introduce a random element on its surface, in this case the snow flakes.

I finally got around to removing photos from a lo-fi phone camera and liked some of the results.
Selective camera movement: low shutter speed combined with hand-held camera phone rotation (e.g. movement from tapping button)
A cheap phone camera JPG was contrast enhanced (DXO filmpack) then toned (Nik colorEFX, Xpro 04 C41-E6 preset)
A shuttered restaurant and a road closed sign happened to be adjacent. This restaurant was remodeled from a drug store in the 1990s, I believe, to allow the facade to open and give the feel of a terrace. One consequence of this is that small sections (less than 1 ft/30cm) of the original tile floor are now on the outside.
Processing notes:
Contrast enhanced with a "Daidoish" preset (exposure, contrast, and clear-view increased; blacks increased and whites decreased in curves to crush blacks and blow highlights)

Janus, duality, yin-yang, opposition...
In reality, each of us attacks life
differently.
Some a provide the show

Some people are static

Puffball portrait practice on a windy day. Working on focus first, light second.
126 in 2026: 106/126 (superstition)
Superstitions include making a wish on dandelion puffball while blowing away seeds and a haunted house. The recently partially burned Mckelvey house lost a large portion of the roof and all window glass, so breezes through the structure cause interior doors and/or loose shutters to gently open and clap closed as if by a ghostly hand.
Processing notes:

Utata's Iron Photographer asks for compositions containing certain elements. This time around they are:
1 - string (on cello)
2 - one or more eggs (naturally brown)
3 - cinematic aspect ratio
A museum is only alive when people visit. This idea seemed best represented by colored ghosts of the live crowd in the black & white museum. Digital Harris shutter effect made by combining different RGB color layers from three sequentially shot frames.
For the curious, this is the Philadelphia, museum of art. The desaturated background was achieved by using color layers from images with different exposure values, effectively giving blue +1 EV, green +0 EV, and red -1 EV.
Edit: The method I think I used may be different than what I actually did. I don't have access to photoshop at the moment, so I can't verify this. The odd colors of the ghosts suggest I did something different. As noted by Hello, I am Bruce (below) the background is completely monochrome. This effect can be achieved by converting the source images to monochrome before further manipulation. Using these for the three color layers in the composite will give color where images differ (things moving), and B&W elsewhere. Look here for an example and description of method.
