The Guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) hosted the family of the ship’s namesake, May 2.
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s grandson, H. Delano Roosevelt, took a tour of Roosevelt with family and friends during a scheduled port visit in Manama, Bahrain.
The tour was led by Cmdr. Jay Clark, Roosevelt’s commanding officer. Sailors from the crew gave presentations about the various departments and capabilities of the ship including bridge fundamentals, navigation, engineering, damage control, aviation, search and rescue, and visit, board, search and seizure operations.
“It was an honor and a privilege to introduce USS Roosevelt to Mr. Roosevelt,” said Cmdr. Jay Clark. “The crew, as well as myself, take immense pride in being Roosevelt Sailors. I am sure that the grandson of our namesake saw that pride and knew we were honoring the legacy Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt left behind.”
After the tour, Clark led the group into the wardroom, where officers were assembled to attend the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) designation pinning of Chief Warrant Officer James Smith. As a surprise, Smith bestowed the honor of pinning the SWO device to Mr. Roosevelt.
“It was dynamic,” said Smith. “To have the grandson of such a great man and woman, the namesakes of our ship, perform the pinning is a once in a lifetime occurrence I will never forget.”
Following the pinning Cmdr. Clark presented Mr. Roosevelt with Roosevelt memorabilia including a signed picture of the ship. In return, Mr. Roosevelt presented Cmdr. Clark with a coin from the battleship USS Iowa, which his family has been influential in helping to restore as a historical monument in Long Beach, Calif., where H. Delano Roosevelt and his family call home.

The Remsen Cemetery is a tangible reminder of the colonial past of this section of Queens. Typical of the small private cemeteries that were favored by early eettlers, it commemorates one of New York's earliest families and the role it played in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. The plot has been preserved and maintained by various local organizations and citiiins within the community.
The Remsen family ancestors immigrated to America in the 17th century from nor*hern Germany and eventually settled in Queens County. The founding father of th. clan in America was Rem Jansen Van der Beeck; his sons adopted the surname Remset, One son, Abraham Remsen,settled at Hempstead Swamp, as this area of Queens County was then called, and had a son named Jeromus. Jeromus lived on the paternal farm and had a son, also named Jeromus, born on November 22, 1735. It is not known if the younger Jeromus grew up to live on or simply near the family homestead. The younger Jercmus served during the French and Indian War of 1757 and became active in Whig politics prior to the Revolutionary War.
After the Continental Congress of 1774 was established the inhabitants of New Towne (Newtown) assembled at the request of Jarwmus Rempen and appointed a committee to insure adherence to congressional measures within the limits of the town. Jeroraus Remsen was a member and clerk of the county committee. Later he was appointed colonel over half the militia of Kings and Queens counties and joined forces under the brigade of General Greene in Brooklyn. These American forces were routed at the Battle of Long Island and after thei ' retreat Colonel Remsen was forced to flee to safety in New Jersey, where he resided until the war's end. Jeromus had married Ann(a), daughter of Cornelius Rapelje, on April 31, 1768, She bore him seven children of whom only three sons survived infancy. Jeromus died in 1790 while Anna lived until 1816.
The original cemetery lay solely within the property of the Remsen family, and it is typical of the private family cemeteries favored by New York's colonial settlers. In a February 23, 1887 article in a Kings County newspaper the cemetery was described as lying between the old Remsen house and the Suydam homestead, neither of which survive. This small cemetery is believed to have been used from the mid- 18th through the 19th centuries for Remsen family members. The oldest known grave is that of Jeromus Remsen, from 1790. In a survey of 1925, the graves and grave-stones of eight Remsen family members were identified.
These included those of Colonel Jeromus Remsen, his wife Ann(a) Remsen, a Jeromus Remsen -who vas probably their son, three Remsen children, a Bridget Remsen, and Major Abraham Rewsian, who is described as the colonel's brother. Presently the cemetery features a group of three, brownstone gravestones near Alderton Avenue, formerly Orville Stryat. (the two Jeromus Remsens and Anna Remscrj), two along the northwesterly perimeter (Jerome Remsen and Ann Elizabeth Remsen), and the remnants of another tombstone along the southern property line (Bridget Remsen). These tombstones date from 1790 through 1819. Recently, commemorative gravestones have been erected by the Veterans Administration in honor of Col. Remsen, Major Abraham Remsen, and their two brothers Aert Remsen and Garrett Remsen, who were also Revolutionary War officers. A World War I memorial, honoring the community's service in that war, occupies the center of the cemetery. It consists of two doughboy statues flanking a flagpole.
The Remsen cemetery remains an important element in the community commemorating an early New York family and their contributions to our heritage.

This is a photograph from the sixth annual running of the 'Streets of Athboy' 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the town of Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland on Friday 9th August 2019 at 20:00. Tonight's event follows on from the very successful previous five runnings of the event. The race event was organised very successfully again by Mick Priest and his team of volunteers and helpers from the local athletics club Father Murphy AC and the local community. The Fr. Murphy club is based in rural Meath between the towns of Ballivor and Athboy. A credit to their establishment the club boasts facilities on 17 acres including a grass 400m and 1KM all weather walking track. Proceeds of the race this evening will contribute towards Fr. Murphy AC's efforts to build a tartan track at the club facility in Frayne. The support shown by the running community highlights the support which Fr. Murphy's AC has within the county of Meath and beyond.

The race itself starts on the Navan road approximately 1KM from the Registration Hall. The race follows a route away along the main street of Athboy and then turns left at the Cosy Pub onto the Kildalkey Road. This brings participants through a series of bends before a long straight stretch leading to a country laneway where there is a short loop before returning back onto the Kildalkey road. This returns back on the route where the race started on. The race finishes in the grounds of Athboy Community Centre. It is a good fair course and many participants feel that it offers the opportunity for fast running and setting personal bests. The first mile is well recognised as being particularly fast. Prizes were given in all of the usual categories. There was also an opportunity for those who registered early to get a lovely technical t-shirt for the race. Overall the race, as part of the Meath AAI series of races, continued and maintained the high standard of road race organisation in County Meath by Meath running and athletic clubs.

After arriving at New Delhi, we slept for a few hours at the airport before heading to Guwahati in Assam (N-E India) with the Himalaya mountain range visible in the distance.
The visit to Guwahati was limited to 1 day, visiting the Assam National Museum and Temple of Kamakhya during the last days of the monsoon period. The next day we left already and we crossed the Bhramaputra river north to the Bhutan border to start our visit to the kingdom of Bhutan .
Bhutan to New Delhi We left Bhutan in Phuntsholing crossing the border with India and we headed for the airport of Bagdagra.
For sure a few hours to remember. At the end of the day we arrived again in New Delhi for 2 additional days in India.
Our first day in New Delhi was used for a citytour. Along all the sites and sounds from traffic, we visited some historic places like the Jama Masjid Mosque, Humayun's tomb, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib temple, India Gate and the Raj Ghat park, with the marble platform that marks the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated.
On our last day, A very early departure for a 5 hour drive over the Yamuna Express way to Agra.
Visiting one of the 7 current World Miracles and the Unesco World Heritage site Taj Mahal temple, Agra Fort and also a brief visit the Little Taj Mahal temple.

Arquitectónicamente La Habana es una maravilla estética. La grandeza del pasado está presente en todas partes. Palacios bellamente restaurados están al lado de otros prácticamente en ruinas. Algunas partes de La Habana parecen zonas de guerra con una mezcla de viviendas, casas en ruinas y edificios que han sido demolidos, dejando las casas vecinas destrozados por el lado. En La Habana Vieja hay muchas casas restauradas.
La Habana es la ciudad perfecta para el turismo de pobreza que hace esta mezcla de fotos de riqueza y pobreza en edificios de antaño. El resultado a menudo presenta una imagen romántica de cuba.
Pero la tragedia no se puede tapar, los enormes abusos económicos de los dictadores del pasado y la mala gestión del gobierno actual son evidentes. Se suponía que el comunismo creaba igualdad, lo que no ha sucedido, y ¿por qué ha dejado al país en un estado tan pobre?
Architecturally Havana is an aesthetic wonder. The grandeur of the past is present everywhere. Beautifully restored palaces are next to others practically in ruins. Some parts of Havana look like war zones with a mix of houses, ruins and buildings that have been torn down leaving the neighboring houses with their gables torn. In Old Havana many houses have been restored.
Havana is the perfect city for slumming down and make this mixture of photos of wealth and poverty in buildings of yesteryear. The result often presents a romantic image of Cuba.
But the tragedy is evident, the enormous economic abuses of the dictators of the past and the mismanagement of the current government are evident. Communism was supposed to create equality, which has not happened, and why has it left the country in such a poor state?

This is a photograph from the second annual running of the Killyon National School 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held at Hill-of-Down, Clonard, Co. Meath, Ireland at 11:00 on Sunday 21st June 2015. The race is held as a fundraiser for the local primary school. Killyon is actually a parish rather than a town or village. With that the race started and finished at the well known Hill-of-Down where the Royal Canal and Dublin Sligo rail line run parallel and cross under the Kinnegad (Westmeath) to Trim (Meath) road. The 5KM route took in a final KM on the beautiful towpath of the Royal canal and finished outside Moran's Pub beside the Canal. Overall the race was very well organised with excellent stewarding and organisation. There was a great spread of refreshments afterwards and participants and families mingled and chatted beside the canal. The race took place on Father's Day and the Summer solstice making the day with the longest duration of day light. The race attracted very good local support from the surrounding areas with local runners, joggers and walkers in attendance.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase.
