Library of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom
More than just a building, the Library of Birmingham (LoB) designed by the Dutch Mecanoo Architects is a People’s Palace, a centre for learning, information and culture that unites people of all ages and backgrounds. The design extends the space of the street indoors. A cantilevered volume not only provides shelter at the entrance, but also serves as a grand balcony with a discovery garden. The circular courtyard cut out of the square is a protected outdoor space that invites daylight deep into the building. Visitors move from one floor to the next through interconnected and overlapping rotundas that provide natural light and ventilation. Ever-changing vistas unfold through the delicate filigree skin of interlocking circles, inspired by the tradition of metalwork in this former industrial city. The prominent golden rooftop rotunda houses the Shakespeare Memorial Room from 1882. Situated between the concrete Repertory Theatre (REP) from 1962 and the listed Baskerville House from 1936, the LoB transforms the largest public square in the heart of the city with three distinct realms for history, culture and entertainment. At 35,000 m², the LoB welcomed over 2.7 million visitors in the first twelve months. New workshops, staff accommodation and a 300-seat auditorium with foyer are shared by both the library and the integrated and renovated REP. The library attained a BREEAM excellent rating.
A peek into La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina - a unique cemetery-and-public-garden spanning 5.5 hectares housing the vaults of the elite of Argentina, from former Presidents to recognizable icons like Eva Peron.
I had spent about an hour walking around when I spotted this incredible sight right at the back of the cemetery where few people ventured - a vault shaped like a church steeple casting a shadow perfectly across the path!

Hoar Cross is a masterpiece of the Gothic Revival, designed by the Victorian architect G.F. Bodley and his partner Thomas Garner, with work beginning in 1872.
Their client was Emily Meynell Ingram, daughter of Lord Halifax, whose husband of seven years had been killed in a hunting accident. She commissioned the church both as his memorial and as a citadel of Anglo-Catholicism, to which Bodley was also attached.
The exterior is a superb work of Decorated revival, while the interior is Victorian High Gothic with all the trimmings.
Holy Angels was consecrated in 1876, although further works took place until the church achieved its present form in 1906.
It is a Grade I listed building.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) is observed globally on the third Sunday of November each year.
In this light, ArriveSAFE, an NGO on Road Safety, Chandigarh Traffic Police and Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation Limited (CITCO) organized an exhibition from 11 AM to 5 PM at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh.
A volunteer dressed as “Yamaraj”, the God of Death said that he is pained to see so many precious lives being lost on the roads. 381 people die on Indian roads daily. This figure with 381 faces representing the people who die daily was put on the giant board. Besides this, 1287 get injured daily putting extra burden on the overstretched medical system.
The Chandigarh Traffic Police officials of the Road Safety Cell distributed pamphlets on safe driving.
This year’s theme is: Let’s have roads that are safe for all. This year’s theme reflects pillar 2 (improvement of/safer road infrastructure) of the Global Plan for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.

La Reggia di Venaria was initially built as a hunting lodge in the hill country to the west of Turin. Construction started in 1675 with work continuing off and on through the next 100 years including an effort to make it the Versailles of Italy.
The place provides a comprehensive history of the house of Savoy which lasted for over 1000 years until the last King of Italy abandoned the throne in 1946. There are some traditional palace style rooms but they have sparse furnishings, frescoes, and plaster work due to the extensive damage the castle suffered through the Napoleonic occupation as a military barracks and then continued under the Italian military. It was abandoned from the end of WWI to 1999 when restoration started. The grounds are extensive and peaceful.

As part of a recent visit to western North Carolina, leadership from the Fish and Wildlife Service’s southeastern regional office in Atlanta had an opportunity to visit a pair of places that are key to the Service’s conservation efforts – the streams of the Upper Nolichucky River valley, home to the Eastern hellbender and endangered Appalachian elktoe; and the summit of Mount Mitchell, one of many high-elevation peaks in the Southern Appalachians that are home to species found no-where else.
