Bordered by the Andes in the east, the Chilean coast range in the west, and considered by many to be the driest desert in the world, Chile's Atacama Desert was the site of the Radiative Heating in Underexplored Bands Campaign (RHUBC-II)
From August to October 2009, a team of researchers from the US and Italy was deployed to the Chajnantor Plateau in Chile for the second phase of the Radiative Heating in Underexplored Bands Campaign (RHUBC-II). The arid, low pressure conditions permits accurate measurements of the amount of infrared energy reaching the Earth’s surface, which scientists use to improve energy transfer calculations in global climate models.

U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I hosted Soldiers, civilians and family members for an Independence Day Celebration July 4 at Camp Casey. The day offered a variety of food and entertainment featuring food-eating contests, a chili cook-off, carnival rides, midway games, clowns, face-painting, kite flying, a dunk tank, and live music with Warrior’s Got Talent taking center stage. After hearing from event host Col. Jack Haefner, Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I and Maj. Gen. Thomas S. Vandal, Commander, Second Infantry Division the community was treated to a rousing “Salute to the Nation” and patriotic fireworks display.

Grave of Emily Newton Jones (1929) in Nottingham Road Cemetery, Derby
Emily Newton Jones died at Haddon House, 50 Nottingham Road, Spondon on 29th April 1929 aged 64. Her funeral took place on Saturday 4th May at Spondon Wesleyan Chapel.

In memory of Scott Kloeck-Jenson, a Global Studies Scholar dedicated to global peace and justice, Global Studies at UW-Madison awards the SKJ International Internship Fellowships to support graduate students interested in undertaking practitioner internships on social justice issues and the International Pre-Dissertation Travel Fellowships to support overseas travel to potential field research sites for doctoral students whose dissertations include social justice elements.
Kloeck-Jenson had been working on his dissertation in political science at UW-Madison, but on June 23, 1999, he, his wife Barbara, and their two children, Zoe and Noah, were killed in a car accident in South Africa. These grants bearing his name honor his commitment to international understanding and research that serves social justice concerns.
These images are from a luncheon held Oct. 6, to recognize the 2014 recipients, which was attended by Ken and Marlys Jenson, Kloeck-Jenson's parents, and Kloeck-Jenson's brother, Paul Jenson.

This is a route that goes all around the perimeter of the municipal area of L´Escala, with the exception of Cinclaus, going along the coastal strip and returning inland.

To follow the route:
The route starts at Cala Montgó and from the beach itself you head towards L'Escala, along Carrer Trenca Braços, on the right, coinciding with the GR-92. Once at the top, in front of Illa Mateua Beach, in Carrer Punta Montgó, turn left to follow the sea, following the GR-92 markers. Go past the Punta dels Cinc Sous, Cala del Salpatx and Les Penyes until you get to Port de la Clota.
Then cross over the port by Carrer Romeu de Corbera, until you come to Riells Beach. At the beach, walk along Passeig del Petit Príncep until you get to Passeig del Mar, which takes you, following the coast, to the old centre of L'Escala. Carry along Passeig Lluís Albert and Port d'en Perris to La Platja. From La Platja (the main town beach) take Carrer Cargol and then Ronda Mar d'en Manassa, on your left, following the coastline. Go past La Creu small bay where you will see the fishermen's huts. This coastal path takes you to the place known as L’Oberta, from where you can see the beaches of Empúries. Walk along the Ronda del Pedró for about 200 metres and when you get to the Lampadòfor (the lamp bearer, the sculpture built to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic flame) turn right to take the Empúries Promenade.
The Empúries Promenade is two and a half kilometres long and runs parallel to the beaches of Empúries. It takes you past the Platja del Rec, Platja del Portitxol, Platja de les Muscleres and Platja del Moll Grec beaches, and you come to Sant Martí d'Empúries, which is the end of the route.
Go past the village of Sant Martí d'Empúries, heading south, taking the main road that leaves the village. From the same road, take the left at the first path you come to, and continue along this path towards Mas Sastruc. At the crossroads with Mas Sastruc, carry straight on and cross over the main road at its narrowest part. On the other side of the road, near the Tourist Information Office, take a path there is on the left that will take you to Les Corts farmhouses, signposted as "Camí de les Corts a Empúries", go between the farmhouses and turn left towards El Molí de L'Escala restaurant, until you come to Camp dels Pilans, in Carrer Muntanya Rodona. This will take you to a path that heads south, right at the edge of the houses. You will find a signpost that labels the path "Via Heraklea" and from here on, follow the livestock path which winds between the pine trees. You will come to the large pine tree known as Pi Gros, carry on towards the south until you reach the road to Bellcaire. Cross over this road and go into the car park of Els Recs farmhouses, from here go to the football pitch and take the path behind it heading south, until you get to Cortal Nou. From Cortal Nou, take the "Termes" Path heading east, go through the old sand quarry, following the green and white markers, cross over Carrer Punta Milà and following the perimeter of the campsites, you will get to the end of the route, Cala Montgó.
Others values:
The value of this route lies in the combination and variety of spaces and landscapes; on the one hand the route takes you along the coast, going past a large number of beaches and small bays and panoramic viewpoints. On the other hand, it takes you past farmhouses and along rural paths with great landscape and botanical interest.

Boy Scouts of America National Jamborees are quadrennial gatherings of thousands of scouts from around the country and the world. The first was held in 1935 in Washington, DC. With the advent of World War II, however, these huge events were deferred for the duration of the war.
In the late 1940s, the Cold War commenced-an unsettling period of repeated crises and tensions between former allies the United States and the Soviet Union. For reassurance, citizens looked back to the founding ideals of democracy, and interest in sites and stories of the American Revolution was strong. When the Boy Scouts of America decided to reestablish jamborees, they chose Valley Forge, the icon of the American Revolution.
Valley Forge served as the site of three National Jamborees, in 1950, 1957, and 1964.
A vision of the Trinity dominates the work. God the Father sits on a throne surrounded by angels and holds the cross bearing his crucified son. The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers above. The altarpiece has long been linked to the convent of Santa Elisabetta delle Convertite in Florence, a community of nuns who welcomed repentant prostitutes. This location explains the presence, on either side of the apparition, of John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, and Mary Magdalen, patroness of the convent. The Magdalen is covered by her hair and John wears a fur garment, recalling the long periods both saints spent as hermits in the wilderness. Life for the nuns of the Convertite convent was similarly austere as they were urged to follow the example of Mary Magdalen who abandoned a worldly life for one of penitence and devotion.
The two smaller figures in the foreground are drawn from the Old Testament: the Archangel Raphael guides the young Tobias on his quest to collect a debt owed to his blind father. On the way, they find a fish with healing properties able to cure the father’s infirmity. The story thus echoed the convent’s mission of protection and rescue.
The altarpiece is thought to have been painted between 1491 and 1494, when work on a new chapel for the convent is documented. Recent technical study has revealed, however, that the painting’s creation may have taken place over a longer period of time as the composition underwent several significant changes. In particular, Tobias and Raphael were once further away behind the cross (and more in proportion to the other figures), nestled in a landscape of rolling hills that was later painted over. As was common practice in the Renaissance, many hands worked on the painting. Botticelli ran a large studio and delegated portions of larger works to assistants. In the Trinity altarpiece, it is likely that the heads of the angels were painted by members of the workshop, in contrast to the main figures that exhibit Botticelli’s characteristic graceful line.

On April 10, 2014, the gallery@calit2 at the University of California, San Diego will kick off its Spring 2014 exhibition, Senses of Care: Mediated Ability and Interdependence. The opening will feature a talk by the curatorial team, led by UC San Diego associate professor of communication Brian Goldfarb with co-curators Christina Aushana and Louise Hickman, as well as a reception, and both are open to the public. The exhibition runs through June 13 in the gallery@calit2 on the first floor of Atkinson Hall on the UC San Diego campus. It will remain in the gallery through the summer, but over the summer it will be viewable by appointment only.
The exhibition will feature an array of artifacts and works by artists and design initiatives that raise provocative questions about the dynamics of care, interdependence and diversity of ability. Senses of Care features artists whose work deals with topics ranging from disability fashion to do-it-yourself (DIY) prosthetics to creative modes of reframing sensory experience, for example, foregrounding our bodily sensation of sound by a Deaf performance artist. These projects point us toward a spectrum of possibilities that emerge around what are commonly understood as limits or challenges to ability. The represented artists demonstrate ways of reorienting notions of "challenged" away from individual capability and toward challenges of forging an open and inclusive world.
