This manuscript was illuminated by a circle of at least five highly organized manuscript painters active in the Flemish cities of Ghent and Bruges. The principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, who painted the majority of the book's miniatures. Manuscripts produced by this circle of artists are renowned for the decoration of their borders, which typically feature a rich variety of realistically-painted flowers, birds, and butterflies.
This prayer book, called a book of hours, was intended not for a cleric, but for the private devotions of a lay person-in this case, Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451-1504). Isabella's coat of arms embellishes the book's frontispiece. It is unlikely that the book was commissioned by the Queen herself; rather, she probably received it as a diplomatic gift from someone courting her patronage, perhaps Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros. A Franciscan friar, Jimenez was dependent upon Isabella for his advancement, first to the post of Queen's confessor in 1492, and then to Archbishop of Toledo in 1495.

One of my favorite things to do on a cruise ship is to get up early and capture the sunrise from the ship. These were taken on Tuesday November 8th, 2022, our second morning at sea as we were racing to pass Hurricane Nicole on our way to Hispaniola. Rainy morning on the ship, so I took most pictures on the Promenade Deck. On board the Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas for the Seven Night Labadee & Puerto Plata Cruise. The cruise embarks from Cape Liberty (Bayone, NJ) with stops at Labadee, Haiti and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic before heading back to New York City. The itinerary changed after Hurricane Nicole canceled our planned stops.

BOSTON – The Center for Service Support’s (CSS) domain Sailors of the Year (SOY) and staff visit USS Constitution, Feb. 26, 2025. The SOY candidates are visiting from CSS subcommands to compete for domain SOY. USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, and played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855. The ship earned the nickname of Old Ironsides during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs were seen bouncing off the ship’s wooden hull. Headquartered in Newport, CSS’s mission is to develop and deliver naval administration, logistics, and media services training to achieve fleet readiness. (U.S. Navy photo by Brett Dodge)

"The Royal Basilica of Saint Francis the Great is a Roman Catholic church in central Madrid, located in the neighborhood of Palacio.
"The main façade faces the Plaza of San Francisco, at the intersection of Bailén, the Gran VÃa de San Francisco, and the Carrera de San Francisco. It forms part of the convent of Jesús y MarÃa of the Franciscan order. The convent was founded in the 13th century at the site of a chapel.
"The building was erected on the plot previously occupied by a primitive Franciscan convent (according to tradition founded by the very same Francis of Assisi in 1217), demolished on the occasion upon orders by King Charles III, who sought to build a new convent from scratch. It was designed in a Neoclassic style in the second half of the 18th century, based on a design by Francisco Cabezas, developed by Antonio Pló, and completed by Francesco Sabatini. The church contains paintings by Zurbarán and Francisco Goya. The walls of the temple was painted in the 19th century. The temple once functioned as the National pantheon and enshrined the remains of famous artists and politicians. Today is an important tourism point."
