Let us descend into Victorian Lichfield's murky, criminal underworld.
When workmen were undertaking maintenance work on Lichfield's Minster Pool in 1858, they uncovered an array of objects, including this early 19th Century double-ended skeleton key.
How did the key end up in the Pool? Perhaps a 19th Century thief threw it in to hide evidence? Or perhaps an innocent locksmith simply dropped it in by mistake?
We'll never know the true story of how the key found its way to the bottom of Minster Pool, but it's easy to let our imaginations run away with stories of burglars and thieves.
The key itself has an iron cylindrical shaft with a bit at either end. The bits are rotated and are mounted at right angles to one another. One bit consists of a single hook-shaped thin ward (This is facing towards the camera in the photo, and so is difficult to see), whilst the opposing bit consists of two hooked shaped wards.
