Number 3 in the "Take Wing" series
A good run, massive splashing, and beatings wing help this duck get airborne.
In 1830 the first Anglo-Americans made their homes in the area between the Brazos and San Bernard rivers. When the settlement got a post office in 1873, its name was Bovine Bend. Sometime after 1880, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway was constructed through the community from Galveston to Brenham. At that time, the town was renamed Wallis Station after J. E. Wallis, the director of the railroad. In 1887 the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, being built east toward Houston, reached Wallis. Starting in about 1890, Czech immigrants began moving into the area. By 1904 there were 631 souls living in Wallis. In 1911, the town dropped "Station" from its name to become Wallis. Seven years later its school had 100 students. Between 1925 and 1943 the population grew from 800 to 900. By the latter year the town boasted 39 businesses. After declining to 690 in 1949, the number of inhabitants increased to 1,075 by 1966. A decade later, the city claimed to have a bank, library, and a newspaper, as well as two schools and eight churches.

Two Bowens Esprit 500 W/S monolights--PC sync to the key light with the fill slave automatically triggered upon fire. On the left of the phone, at about an 8 o'clock angle, I shot through a white umbrella which was about the same level as the subject. The second (fill) light was higher up and maybe 6 feet away at a 5 o'clock angle, shooting into an umbrella facing a wall. The fill bounce off the wall diffused it pretty well overall and allowed me to bring out the gross, vintage-looking, olive-green background a bit more. I still have no idea what I'm doing, but I like the results of this experiment.

Tau Emerald (Hemicordulia tau)
While I was waiting to see if I was going to get any shots of the Grebes I noticed a number of Tau Emerald Dragonflies skimming around so decided to try for a flight shot.
Did you forget to call me?
Or baby, did you lose my number?
Don't tell me that you're sorry
Whose covers are you sleeping under?
I was just across the street
And I just wanted to reach out
Thinking we could get together
And I didn't mean to stalk you
But I saw that guy you talked to
Everybody knows I'm jealous
And I know it's not all about me
I know that you don't come easily
But you reach for the stars if it's worth it
If you're gonna act like we're just friends
Throw away the messages I sent
If you're playing a game, then it's working
Did you forget to call me?
Or baby, did you lose my number?
(Did you lose my number?)
Don't tell me that you're sorry
Whose covers are you sleeping under?
You know I just want someone that I can love
Someone that I can love
Someone that I can love
Can love
Did you forget to call me?
Or baby, did you lose my number?

Like all species of lemur, Crowned Lemurs are native to Madagascar. They live only in forests at the northern tip of the island where their wild number is estimated at fewer than 10,000.
They get their name from the distinctive crown pattern on the top of their heads. Males have a brown and ginger coat with a black spot at the top of their heads whereas females are more grey in colour with a ginger back.
Crowned lemurs live in groups, called troops, of around 6 but this number can be as high as 15.
This example is captive bred.

“ There are things that drift away like our endless, numbered days …
There are sailing ships that pass all our bodies in the grass …
There are names across the sea, only now I do believe … “

PASSING AFTERNOON by IRON and WINE
ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS
Sea foam, sea glass
seashells, treasures
collecting driftwood
at our leisure
pebbles, stones
Mother of Pearl
amber nuggets
memories whirl
moonlight, sunshine
bare-foot walks
paddle, swim and
endless talk
smiles and laughter
escapades
secrets kept and
a promise made
waves and cries
of seabirds high
fishing boats
left high and dry
row of huts
and two, nine, seven
find the key
to seventh heaven …

Blower Bentley number 4 owned by billionaire Ralph Lauren, and an example of a philosophy that looked good on paper......take a proven 4 1/2 liter four cylinder (winning Le Mans in 1928) engine putting out 110 hp and strap on a supercharger and voila! 240 hp. This was done over WO Bentley's strong objections, who felt that messing with the finished engine in that way would add problems more than speed. He felt if you needed more HP, you added cylinders, thus the LeMans winning Bentley in '29 was a speed 6, and the winner in 1930 was a straight 8.......but, in the age of focus on long distance racing, testing the reliability of components, the more glamorous blower Bentleys NEVER won a race......though they remain far more desirable and expensive.
