I spotted a Rover P6 on EBay with the following description - "Rover P6 need some tlc to body work engine runs well currently not M.o.t'd or taxed sold as seen possible restoration project." £1000.
The classified ad also said that the car had 32000 miles on the clock, 5 previous owners and electric leather seats.
Intrigued, I went to take a look.
It does say 32000 miles but for the second time - in other words its been round the clock - 132,000 miles. This is a car which has had an amateur restoration in the past. It indeed has electric seats, taken from a 4x4 and crammed in to the small P6. The seats aren't leather and they are perfectly vile. The holes for the rear headrests can be seen and the headrests are certainly absent because they'd be too big. The front doors have speakers in them and there are three speakers on the parcel shelf.
There is no sign of a chassis number. There is rot in the front passenger well. There is quite a lot of rot elsewhere too. The paintwork is indifferent. Daylight can be seen through the boot and the boot courtesy light is loose.
The engine sounded sweet but the car wouldn't start in "Park" - it had to be "Neutral" which is unusual for an automatic (in this context a Rover 3500 is no different from a modern automatic car).
The little badges taken from a Rover 400 are an insult to a real Rover. My P6 would drive me off Shap Fell if I stuck these on her.
The wheels looked nice and the boot rack is an attractive feature, even if it needs attention.
The V5 document and a couple of previous MOTs were present but no other history was available.
I don't know where this car's heading but it's not the one I'm looking for.
