Summary:
The Frank Siegel papers measure 0.5 linear foot and date from 1922‐1948. The collection includes biographical materials, correspondence, and photographs documenting Frank Siegel’s parents and their families in Poland and Belgium before the war, his mother’s deportation to Auschwitz, and his relationship with his father in Belgium after the war.

Biography:
Frank Siegel was born François Zygielman in October 1933 in Antwerp, Belgium, to Cudyk and Rozia Schreiber Zygielman, who had emigrated from Poland to Belgium around 1928. The family tried to escape to England via Dunkirk when Germany invaded Belgium in 1940, but returned to Brussels. Siegel's mother was taken to a hospital in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz that October where she was killed. Frank Siegel was hidden in a home, a Catholic orphanage in Namur, and, with the help of Abbé Joseph André, in a home in Ciney in later 1943. Cudyk Zygielman remained hidden in Brussels during the Holocaust. Father and son immigrated to the United States in 1949, and Cudyk Zygielman married Erna Bialer in 1951. Bialer had survived Majdanek, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, spent some time in a displaced persons camp in Germany, arrived in Belgium in 1946, and immigrated to the United States in 1951. Frank Siegel became a teacher and lived in New York.
