Marsden Hartley (1877-1943)

Marsden Hartley created Painting, Number 5, one of a series of War Motifs, during an extended stay in Berlin. Hartley was fascinated by the military pageantry of pre-war imperial Germany, and fragments of flags, banners, medals, and insignia crowd the surface of his canvases. "The military life adds so much in the way of a sense of perpetual gaiety here in Berlin," he wrote in 1913. The outbreak of World War I deeply troubled Hartley, however, and he was devastated by the death of Karl von Freyburg, a young German lieutenant with whom he had fallen in love. This work blends the splintered abstraction of Cubism with the mystical overtones of German Expressionism to conjure a symbolic portrait of Hartley’s fallen friend: included are an Iron Cross medal, epaulets, and brass buttons from his uniform, a chessboard that refers to his favorite game, and the number eight, a symbol of transcendence.

The Whitney Museum of American Art, known informally as the "Whitney", was founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875–1942), a wealthy and prominent American socialite and art patron. The museum focuses on 20th- and 21st-century American art, with a permanent collection that comprises more than 21,000 pieces by more than 3,000 artists.
The Whitney occupied a modernist Upper East Side building from 1966 through 2014 before relocating to its current home, a nine-story, 200,000-square-foot Renzo Piano-designed building at 99 Gansevoort Street, in May 2015.

NG/G16 Number 87 at the head of the 12.30 Caernarfon to Pont Croesor has just arrived at Beddgelert in the Summer rain, on 11th August 2011. The Welsh Highland Railway is a narrow gauge steam railway with trains running on rails with a gauge of 24 inches or 600mm. The Welsh Highland Railway now runs for 25 miles in Wales and the journey from Pont Croesor will take 2 hours a distance of 22 miles.

Finally this day comes. Yes this is a just a number, and it should be more meaningful if this number appears in your account statement (not the liability side). But this number is completely contributed by people who I don't know at all (including bloggers who have either acknowledged me or not), by people who transform from cyber friends to real friends, and by people who have known me for long. There is no other word than to thank all of you. I am so glad that you spared some minutes to pay me a visit, and left me some warm words. I learn and got inspired by many of you.
Number 37. Not number 53. :-D And it's not a '53 model, either. The split rear window in the back indicates that's it's even older, as the last year of the split-window Bugs was 1952.
Sadly, I don't know the exact year.
The split rear window was replaced by a single-pane oval rear window when Volkswagen designers decided that the central pillar of the original rear window was an impediment to visibility and thus not very safe. So, given all that, it's ironic that split-window Volkswagens are collector's items.
I don't know if this Beetle was ever actually raced. :-D
Secret number six:
If it weren't for work and going out to dinner, I would never leave the house. Social butterfly I'm not. I love going to dinner with my friends, but bars are not my thing. The last bar I went to was a few years ago. The only thing I recall is sitting at a table while my friend danced, trying not to reveal how petrified I was on the inside. It was like a social anxiety attack. It wasn't pretty. I have grown leaps and bounds in just a year or two, but there was a time in my life when I was so crippled with low self-esteem that I felt like everyone was staring at me and mocking me. When you are ridiculed and picked on for most of your childhood and painfully shy, you tend to develop a low self-esteem. We've already established I have a hard time sticking up for myself. I was easy prey. The shy fat kid. I don't even know what my point is now. Oh, yes. My secret. What it amounts to is; social anxiety - bad, sushi - good.
