the beach was pretty today. this is one of my favorite places to watch the sunset, North Gulf Access. I went by myself, I needed to learn to be alone and by myself. I have a deep fear of being alone, and not needed. this was a refreshing sunset.

Two weeks in NOLA for the mardi gras 2017Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

Some of these songs are highly significant to me, and others are simply songs that I enjoy. They are listed here in no particular order.
Born Again -- Newsboys
Newsboys are by far one of my favorite bands, and this song, the title track of their most recent album, is excellent.
Symphonies -- Dan Black
This song was introduced to me just a week or two ago about a very good friend. I don't typically like this style, but I do like this song.
Hanging by a Moment -- Lifehouse
I've found myself listening to this song more and more lately...several lines really strike a deep chord right now.
Heart Still Beats -- Brave Saint Saturn
I could very easily have posted nothing but Brave Saint Saturn songs for this week. If you have not ever heard of this band, you are missing out.
I do not like most Christian music. The music is often B-quality (if you're lucky) and the lyrics are about half an inch deep. BSS is not like that. They do not shy away from difficult topics--death, pain, apathy, frustration, turning away from God. It's real music for real people who don't spend every minute of their life praising Jesus and feeling blessed. There is certainly an element of praise and blessing in their music, but at times it is almost completely overshadowed by life's daunting situations. It reminds me of some of David's psalms.

Weezer is awesome. Actually, you can really use any Weezer song you want to and act like it was on the list...they're all good.
Love you -- Jack Ingram
While this is a funny, light-hearted song, I feel it actually contains a deep truth. Love is shown at that moment when you want to scream "F*** YOU!" but instead choose to say "love you."
Turn the Page -- Metallica
There is no way you can post a list like this without including Metallica. Easily one of the most awesome bands ever. And this is one of their best songs. Pure incredibleness. And what better way to end the list than pure incredibleness?

The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). It would have been Roxy's first record with Brian Eno since 1973, who wrote two songs for it as well as played keyboards.[4] However, Bryan Ferry eventually confirmed that material from these sessions would be released as a Ferry solo album, with Eno playing on "a couple of tracks,"[5] and that he doesn't think they'll record as Roxy Music again.[6] Subsequently, this was confirmed by the announcement of a solo Bryan Ferry album, entitled Olympia.

Formed in 2004 by Mark Tremonti and Scott Phillips after a cooling of their relationship with Creed's singer (Creed has since reconciled and reunited), the new band hooked up with then ex-Creed bassist Marshall and former Mayfield Four frontman Kennedy (who recently performed and co-wrote 2 songs on Slash’s solo record and fronts his touring band).
In 2004 the band recorded their debut album, One Day Remains. It went gold in the United States and spawned three singles as well as the track “Metalingus,” which was adopted by the WWE’s Superstar Edge as his theme song later that year. In 2007 the band released the critically acclaimed second album, Blackbird, which included the hit singles “Rise Today” and “Watch Over You.” The latter became a top 10 video as well as the featured song on VH-1’s Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew. The band took to the road to promote their sophomore release, gaining more fans across the globe with their intense and powerful live show.
Lyrically, the first two albums are based on themes immersed in hope and perseverance in the face of adversity. On AB III, however, the theme has shifted. Kennedy states, “This record is definitely a departure from the last two albums in terms of its subject matter. It touches on the thoughts and emotions of someone who has come to question everything that was once regarded as an absolute truth. It’s the realization that everything you once believed in might not exist.”
This journey is set into motion by the album’s opening track, “Slip to the Void.” The song’s sparse and moody intro set’s up the narrative as Kennedy’s vocal and lyrics emerge. Tremonti adds, “’Slip To The Void,’ has one of my favorite vocal performances ever by Myles, the song is really creepy and lets the listener know the vibe of the record. It’s pretty dark, the intro really sucks you in.”
The album then shifts gears into the metallic first single, “Isolation,” showcasing Alter Bridge’s ability to play and write aggressively while maintaining their signature melodic component. Tremonti states, “Melody is still the most important thing for us. There’s no point in being heavy just for the sake of being heavy.”
From the bombastic riffs of “Still Remains” to the brooding band favorite “Show Me A Sign,” the album plays like a concept record whose main character is someone desperately struggling to find their place in a world steeped in doubt and emptiness. The track, “Words Darker Than Their Wings,” is the final chapter of this tale. Kennedy says, “The lyric was inspired by a conversation I had with a good friend a while ago. It was the catalyst for the idea of having both Mark and I trade off on the lead vocal. I thought it would be a good way of making the differing points of view in the ‘conversation’ be more effective. More importantly, I thought Mark sounded great singing it!”
While AB III is a record with a consistent theme, there are songs both musically and thematically that break away and touch on different human emotions. One of those moments is found in “Wonderful Life,” a song that Kennedy claims was “An extremely emotional song to put together, it took a long time.” He then adds, “The lyric was inspired by the idea that there will come a day when we all must say goodbye to the ones we love and hold dear in our hearts. Basically, I asked myself what would I want to say in that final moment, that last goodbye?”
The band enlisted Producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Iggy Pop, Incubus), to capture the vision the band had for AB III. Baskette, described by Tremonti as “like a fifth band-member,” was also at the helm for the recording of Blackbird. Kennedy says,” Over the years we have definitely established a bond with Elvis. We trust his instincts, he knows how to bring out the best in us sonically and creatively.”
AB III is an incredibly intense and dynamic album proving Alter Bridge continues to grow and evolve with each recording. “We went into the process of putting the record together with a lot of confidence,” Tremonti reveals, “but we didn’t go into it looking to be commercial, or to have radio singles. We just wanted this to be an album that pleased us artistically, through and through.”

Built in 1908 during the Edwardian heyday of the band movement before the Great War, the Queen Alexandra Bandstand is a beautiful and well maintained example of creative bandstand design. It was named after the then British Queen, wife of Edward VII.
Erected in the central median strip of Ballarat’s premier boulevard, Sturt Street between Doveton and Mair Streets, the Queen Alexandra Bandstand is surrounded by leafy oak trees and other deciduous European exotic trees. It is the second bandstand along Sturt Street, the other being the Titanic Memorial Bandstand. The Queen Alexandra bandstand is built in a polygonal form surmounted by a Moorish or Russian influenced onion dome. The bandstand has particularly fine wrought iron detailing incorporating musical motifs, including harps, horns and Edwardian styled music stands and is an important and exotic element of the streetscape of Sturt Street.
The Queen Alexandra Bandstand it is now one of the few remaining examples of bandstands in Victoria. It serves as a tangible reminder of a highly popular form of entertainment, prominent on the community agenda for many years. The construction of the bandstand and its survival until now also reflects the prominence of music in Ballarat's cultural and civic identity.

Orange Crush: R.E.M., Green
This song is one of many off of R.E.M.'s Green album, one of the most influential albums musically and lyrically for my life. For the meaning of this and many songs, Stipe himself is rather vague on the true meanings and words of the songs. I read something once that this song was about The Vietnam War and the use of Napalm- then it was also about the actual soda "Orange Crush" and really, the world will probably never know. And that in and of itself is the beauty of music.
What music means to one person, will mean something different to another. What words touch one person's life will do nothing for someone else's world. Lyrically this song did not inspire me... The music of this song is a very driving beat and a driving song.
When I graduated High School my father took me on a camping trip in East Texas. It was so hot and humid that to escape the heat he took me on the back roads and taught me to drive a standard transmission. Once I got the hang of it I went off on my own- playing this song over and over... shifting with the changes in the song, singing with the chorus. It was a potent moment in the relationship between my father and I... a turning point almost- and this song was the "theme song" to that moment.

Treat Her Right is a blues rock group formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1984. The band originally featured Mark Sandman on guitar, Billy Conway on drums, Dave Champagne on guitar, and Jim Fitting on harmonica. Singing and songwriting duties were shared by all but Conway. Champagne and Fitting reformed the band in 2009 with new members Steve Mayone and Billy Beard.
In addition to being the forerunner to the successful indie rock band Morphine, Treat Her Right is often credited with helping to spawn the punk-blues hybrid (sometimes dubbed cowpunk, among other titles) that achieved prominence in the early 2000s.
History
Career (1984–1998)
The band derived its name from the 1965 international smash hit by Roy Head and the Traits, "Treat Her Right." The group's self-financed and self-titled debut was released on a small Boston record label in 1986, and their first recording attempt was a modest success - Champagne's "I Got a Gun" and Sandman's cover of James Blood Ulmer's "Where Did All the Girls Come From?" received some play on college radio. "I Think She Likes Me" describes Sandman's experience in a Fairplay, Colorado bar where a woman came on to him. The group signed to RCA Records, who reissued the debut in 1988.
Tied to the Tracks was issued in 1989. Sales did not meet RCA's expectations. In the notes for their third record, the group writes, "RCA decided that if our little basement tape could do so well, why not spend fifty times more money and it will be fifty times better! (They think everything works like that.)" Treat Her Right were dropped from their RCA contract.
What's Good for You, their third album, was issued on Rounder Records in 1991. The ragged, live-in-the-studio sound was partly modeled on the model established by Chess Records, which had released many classic blues and early rock and roll records. Shortly after this third release, Treat Her Right disbanded.
The group reformed in 1995 under the direction of Rolling Stones backup guitar player Bob Anderson, but disbanded for the second time in 1998.
Other projects and post-breakup
Fitting later played with The The, The Coots and Session Americana. Champaign remained musically active, playing with groups such as The Jazz Popes. Sandman formed Morphine in 1989, which Conway joined in 1993. Although more blues-based than Morphine, Treat Her Right sowed the seeds of Sandman's later sound with its unusual instrumentation (Sandman's guitar with Treat Her Right was a three string custom model, making it sound more like a bass guitar) and slightly dark focus, most evident on the Sandman-penned songs.
Sandman died of a heart attack while onstage with Morphine in Italy in 1999.
Reformation (2009–present)
The Treat Her Right song "Rhythm & Booze" was featured on The Hangover soundtrack, released in 2009. In the summer of this same year, The Lost Album, a record of unreleased Treat Her Right material, was released by Hi-n-Dry. Shortly thereafter, Treat Her Right reunited to mark the ten-year anniversary of Sandman's death at the Mark Sandman Memorial Concert in September, and the band continued activity thereafter. Champagne and Fitting led the new version of Treat Her Right, joined by Steve Mayone playing low guitar and Billy Beard (previously of the Boston new wave band Face to Face) playing drums.

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.
In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.
They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.
In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

It would have been Roxy's first record with Brian Eno since 1973, who wrote two songs for it as well as played keyboards.[4] However, Bryan Ferry eventually confirmed that material from these sessions would be released as a Ferry solo album, with Eno playing on "a couple of tracks,"[5] and that he doesn't think they'll record as Roxy Music again.[6] Subsequently, this was confirmed by the announcement of a solo Bryan Ferry album, entitled Olympia.

Radiohead is one of those groups that I liked right out of the box, and before long I had collected every CD they'd made, and was hungry for more.. There's a sense of melancholy about their music that appealed to me, and a lonely beauty to the voice that I never tired of.. As is often the case though - reading the lyrics doesn't really make literal sense - not in the way most country songs do, with a straight-forward story, with a beginning, a middle, and an end.. But I was raised in a time when the lyrics were often secondary to the mood of the piece - and often were indecipherable anyway - much less what they "mean".. I think they mean what they mean to you - and that's all that really matters.. This song is so pretty, melodically, that it's almost a lullaby, even thought the lyrics are rather sad... I think...

In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Ryan Adams. Sam supported close friend and musical influence, Mike Rosenberg (Passenger) at Adelaide-based Fowlers Live, as an integral part of Mike’s ‘All the Little Lights’ album tour, a highlight of Sam’s career to date.
The recording of ‘Our Shining Skin’ saw Sam and his band work endlessly with the talented Barossa-based Jamie Blechynden of Stella Studios and VJ productions. Supported by BJ Barker (drums), Steve Flemming (bass) and Glen Wagland (engineer), tracking the backbone of all 12 songs took a mere two days to complete. ‘Our Shining Skin’ quickly earned impressive reviews and was labelled as a ‘formidable and wide spreading resume’ for Sam (Timber and Steel, August, 2012).
Kicking off an Australian tour, Sam officially released the highly anticipated album at a sold out show on June 9, 2012, held at the Chateau’s acoustically brilliant ‘Long Room’. In June and July 2012, Sam crossed the country, delighting crowds and building his fan base in Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin and Adelaide, including an unforgettable sold out show with Sam’s full band at the prominent Adelaide venue, the Promethean Theatre on September 27, 2012.
Marking the beginning of what’s set to be a milestone year and following a hugely successful first tour, Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100.

The ''Vocal group Octachord'' with its 8 members has been active for 3 years now. It cherishes ''a capella'' way of singing of the songs from different genres, with a special emphasis on gospel and pop. We are the only mixed vocal group in Rijeka (Croatia) in the category to 10 members. We are musically educated young people who want to share their love towards music with as many people as possible. From the very beginning of our activity we have had many performances at the universities and faculties in Rijeka, as well as at many cultural events in Rijeka. Some of them are the humanitarian concert for helping of the blind and partially sighted children, organized by the association ''For the children with love''. We also performed at the opening of the Medieval sculpture exhibition in 2009, at the 5th Croatian slavistic congress in 2010. As well, it's our custom every year, from our founding, to have at least one Christmas whole-evening concert and in December 2011 we held four, two of which were in Zagreb (CRO) as a part of the event ''Advent in Zagreb''.
Throughout these 3 years of our existence we participated at 20° International coral competition in Verona (ITA) in 2009, where we won the best graded second place. We won jury commendations which were a great encouragement for us in the future. Last year (2011) we participated at the 1st International competition in ''a capella'' singing, organized by Olja Dešić and Vocal Studio Marathon - Vocal Marathon Encounters in Rijeka (CRO). In October 2011 we performed also at the International choral competition in Rimini (ITA) and we won the silver medal in category of gospel & traditional folk music. We also won a special award - golden medal in the category of vocal groups to 12 members.
In the purpose of presentating our work, with the help of ''Department of culture in Rijeka'', we had presented ourselves in our first whole-evening concert on November 13, 2010 in ''Croatian cultural center on Sušak''. We were very happy to see that the numerous audience was satisfied enjoying our performance. At the same place we prepare another independent concert in autumn.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Roxy Music #98 on its "The Immortals – 100 The Greatest Artists of All Time" list.[3]
A new studio album, which would have been their ninth, began recording in 2005. It would have been Roxy's first record with Brian Eno since 1973, who wrote two songs for it as well as played keyboards.[4] However, Bryan Ferry eventually confirmed that material from these sessions would be released as a Ferry solo album, with Eno playing on "a couple of tracks,"[5] and that he doesn't think they'll record as Roxy Music again.[6] Subsequently, this was confirmed by the announcement of a solo Bryan Ferry album, entitled Olympia.

Roxy Music are an English art rock group formed in 1971 by Bryan Ferry, who became the group's lead vocalist and chief songwriter. The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). Former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and "treatments"), and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin). Although the band took a break from group activities in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have toured together intermittently since that time.
