I have spoke in class today.

Pearl Jam - Jeremy

Not to boast or anything, but I don't know anyone who shares their name with a cooler song. But, I'll admit, I don't know any Laylas or Judes.

For Musically Challenged. You should all check it out cause it's my week to pick the songs and, if I do say so myself, they're all rather excellent.

I may do another shot for this song, because it's my song and I should unleash a lion on it, so to speak. But for now, this'll do pigs. This'll do.

For musically talented Barossa Valley local, Sam Brittain, story-telling is exactly that. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Our Shining Skin’ on June 1, 2012, the path to success for the gifted and independent musician has transformed into a never-ending road. First picking up a guitar at the age of three and additionally turning his hand to the piano and drums,

In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Ryan Adams. Sam supported close friend and musical influence, Mike Rosenberg (Passenger) at Adelaide-based Fowlers Live, as an integral part of Mike’s ‘All the Little Lights’ album tour, a highlight of Sam’s career to date.

The recording of ‘Our Shining Skin’ saw Sam and his band work endlessly with the talented Barossa-based Jamie Blechynden of Stella Studios and VJ productions. Supported by BJ Barker (drums), Steve Flemming (bass) and Glen Wagland (engineer), tracking the backbone of all 12 songs took a mere two days to complete. ‘Our Shining Skin’ quickly earned impressive reviews and was labelled as a ‘formidable and wide spreading resume’ for Sam (Timber and Steel, August, 2012).

Kicking off an Australian tour, Sam officially released the highly anticipated album at a sold out show on June 9, 2012, held at the Chateau’s acoustically brilliant ‘Long Room’. In June and July 2012, Sam crossed the country, delighting crowds and building his fan base in Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin and Adelaide, including an unforgettable sold out show with Sam’s full band at the prominent Adelaide venue, the Promethean Theatre on September 27, 2012.

Marking the beginning of what’s set to be a milestone year and following a hugely successful first tour, Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100.

2013 saw Sam embark on a 16 date tour once again supporting new age folk music legend Mike Rosenberg (Passenger).

Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is an opéra bouffon (a form of operetta), or opéra féerie in its revised version, by Jacques Offenbach. The French text was written by Ludovic Halévy and later revised by Hector-Jonathan Crémieux.

The work, first performed in 1858, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta.[1Offenbach's earlier operettas were small-scale one-act works, since the law in France did not allow certain genres of full-length works. Orpheus was not only longer, but more musically adventurous than Offenbach's earlier pieces.

This also marked the first time that Offenbach used Greek mythology as a backdrop for one of his buffooneries. The operetta is an irreverent parody and scathing satire on Gluck and his Orfeo ed Euridice and culminates in the risqué Galop infernal ("Infernal Galop") that shocked some in the audience at the premiere. Other targets of satire, as would become typical in Offenbach's burlesques, are the stilted performances of classical drama at the Comédie-Française and the scandals in society and politics of the Second French Empire.

The "Infernal Galop" from Act II, Scene 2, is famous outside classical circles as the music for the "can-can" (to the extent that the tune is widely, but erroneously, called "can-can") . Saint-Saëns borrowed the Galop, slowed it to a crawl, and arranged it for the strings to represent the tortoise in The Carnival of the Animals.

Performance history

Playbill from an 1874 revival

The first performance of the two-act, opéra bouffe version took place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris on 21 October 1858 and ran for an initial 228 performances. It then returned to the stage a few weeks later, after the cast had had a rest. For the Vienna production of 1860, Carl Binder provided an overture that became famous, beginning with its bristling fanfare, followed by a tender love song, a dramatic passage, a complex waltz, and, finally, the renowned can-can music.[3]

In America the work played in German at the Stadt Theatre, on Broadway, from March 1861.[4] It had its Czech premiere in 1864, under Adolf Čech.[5] It had a run of 76 performances at Her Majesty's Theatre, in London, beginning on 26 December 1865, in an adaptation by J. R. Planché.[6]

A four-act version, designated as an opéra féerie, was first performed at the Théâtre de la Gaîté on 7 February 1874.[7] (This has proved less popular over time than the original two act version.)

Sadler's Wells opera presented an English version by Geoffrey Dunn beginning on 16 May 1960.[8] In the 1980s, English National Opera staged the opera freely translated into English by Snoo Wilson with David Pountney. The production was notable for its satirical portrayal of the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as the character Public Opinion. The first performance was at the Coliseum Theatre in London on 5 September 1985.[9] The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company performed the work in the 1990s.

Critical appreciation

In the eyes of Clément and Larousse] the piece is une parodie grotesque et grossière (a coarse and grotesque parody), full of vulgar and indecent scenes that give off une odeur malsaine (an unhealthy odor). In the opinion of Piat, however, Offenbach's Orphée is, like most of his major operettas, a bijou (jewel) that only snobs will fail to appreciate. The piece was not immediately a hit, but critics' condemnation of it, particularly that of Jules Janin, who called it a "profanation of holy and glorious antiquity," only provided vital publicity, serving to heighten the public's curiosity to see the piece.

Finally getting tickled...with the help of stickies.

Our kids have grandparents who were very talented musically...a jazz drummer, an accomplished piano player, a performer in the USO, a singer and play director. We can trace this musical ability back even further. Singing and playing the piano was always a favored activity.

This talent has skipped two generations. Clay, Maggie and Hannah all took piano lessons growing up. Clay lasted the longest (into high school) and he has a repertoire of four songs. Maggie lasted the shortest. Hannah took lessons through elementary school, but hasn't touched the piano since. We no longer tune it but treat it as an old friend. It sits in our living room waiting quietly.

We came home last night to the sound of piano music, a delightful sound. Hannah, bored writing her History thesis, "took up piano " for the night. She had her laptop on the bench with the backup music and put stickies on the keys as visual aides to help her left hand. Bart and I were smiling.

Pray For You- By Jaron and the Long Road to Love

I haven't been to church since I don't remember when

Things were going great til they fell apart again

So I listened to the preacher as he told me what to do

He said you can't go hatin' others who have done wrong to you

Sometimes we get angry but we must not condemn

Let the good Lord do his job, you just pray for them

I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill

I pray a flower pot falls from a window sill

And knocks you in the head like I'd like to

I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls

I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls

I pray all your dreams never come true

Just know wherever you are, honey, I pray for you

I'm really glad I found my way to church

Cause I'm already feelin' better and I thank God for the words

Yeah, I'm gonna take the high road and do what the preacher told me to do

You keep messin' up, and I'll keep prayin' for you

I pray your tire goes out at 110

I pray you pass out drunk with your best friend

And wake up with his and her tattoos

I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill

I pray a flower pot falls from a window sill

And knocks you in the head like I'd like to

I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls

I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls

I pray all your dreams never come true

Just know wherever you are, near or far

In your house or in your car

Wherever you are, honey, I pray for you

I pray for you

I've wanted to do this song for months, but couldn't decide how- So today I decided I'll start a new series dedicated to this song..I think It would make a cool group- Let me know if you agree... 'Course I've dedicated my life to helping others, so the only person I could hurt is one of my clones (the Dumb one...) but I think this song is screaming for a collaboration ....Let me know if interested in being my next victim...

I was so excited when I saw this song on the song list for Musically Challenged. This is one of my favorite summer tunes. It brings back a one of my most fun summer memories of the Jersey Shore. When I was in jr. high, my best friend Lori and I went to Belmar with her older brother. It was one of our first independent jaunts. We had a blast on the beach and then even more fun at the boardwalk. Anthony won this Steve Miller Band 8 track tape. all of a sudden a huge down pour started and within an hour the streets of Belmar were flooded. It felt like hours to get out of town, the whole time we were listening to The Joker. This is my grinner, lover, sinner, joker, smoker and midnight toker ;o)

Space Cowboy by Steve Miller

Some people call me the space cowboy yeah

Some call me the gangster of love

Some people call me Maurice

Cause' I speak of the pompetous of love

People talk about me baby

Say I'm doin' you wrong, doin' you wrong

But don't you worry baby don't worry

Cause' I'm right here at home

Cause' I'm a picker

I'm a grinner

I'm a lover

And I'm a sinner

playin' my music in the sun

I'm a joker

I'm a smoker

I'm a mid-night toker

I get my lovin' on the run

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

You're the cutest thing that I ever did see

I really love your peaches

Want to shake your tree

Lovey dovey, lovey dovey, lovey dovey all the time

Ooh wee baby, I sure show you a good time

Cause' I'm a picker

I'm a grinner

I'm a lover

And I'm a sinner

playin'my music in the sun

I'm a joker

I'm a smoker

I'm a mid-night toker

I sure don’t want to hurt no one

(solo)

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

People keep talkin' about me baby

Say I'm doin' you wrong

Well don't you worry, don't worry, no don't worry mama

Cause' I'm right here at home

You're the cutest thing I ever did see

Really love your peaches want to shake your tree

Lovey dovey, lovey dovey, lovey dovey all the time

Come on baby now, I'll show you a good time

Muse: Stockholm Syndrome

I won't stand in your way

Let your hatred grow

And she'll scream

And she'll shout

And she'll pray

And she had a name

Yeah she had a name

And I won't hold you back

Let your anger rise

And we'll fly

And we'll fall

And we'll burn

No one will recall

No one will recall

This is the last time I'll abandon you

And this is the last time I'll forget you

I wish I could

Look to the stars

Let hope burn in your eyes

And we'll love

And we'll hope

And we'll die

All to no avail

All to no avail

This is the last time I'll abandon you

And this is the last time I'll forget you

I wish I could

This is the last time I'll abandon you

And this is the last time I'll forget you

I wish I could

I wish I could

Wake up to a sunny day

So open and exposed.

I love that song. I love that man. Ahhh :)

In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.

The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.

They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.

In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

Muse - Dig Down

Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboards) and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion).

Muse released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999, showcasing Bellamy's falsetto and a melancholic alternative rock style. Their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), expanded their sound, incorporating wider instrumentation and romantic classical influences, and earned them a reputation for energetic live performances. Absolution (2003) saw further classical influence, with orchestra on tracks such as "Butterflies and Hurricanes", and became the first of five consecutive UK number-one albums. The album has a noticeably darker and heavier tone musically, with a lyrical focus on the theological and apocalyptic concepts.

When I got Claire484.t21 in the tribute challenge I knew exactly what to do. I was taken by her series of 'Musically Challenged' PADs on song lyrics, so I chose an old favourite song of mine, 'Kayleigh' by Marillion, and recruited my beautiful daughter and my friend's cherry tree to create this tribute shot.

"Do you remember, chalk hearts melting on a playground wall?

Do you remember, dawn escapes from moonwashed college halls?

Do you remember, the cherry blossom in the market square?

Do you remember, we thought it was confetti in our hair?

By the way, didn't I break your heart?

Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart.

So sorry, I never meant to break your heart,

But you broke mine..."

Nothing feels right when I'm not with you

Sick of this dress and these Jimmy Choos

Taking them off 'cause I feel a fool

Try'na dress up when I'm missing you

Im'ma step out of this lingerie

Curl up in a ball with something Hanes

In bed I lay

With nothing but your T-shirt on

So what has Big Joe to do with the Musically Challenged theme? It seemed appropriate for "Rat Race" by The Specials - partly because of the lines in the Lyrics (see later) & partly because I was at Birmingham University 30 years ago when I met The Specials.

We got special backstage tickets to see them through my mum! She taught at a school where one of her colleagues used to play with The Specials & he invited my mum, my sister & myself along to see them.

Can't remember the venue, but the music was great, and then we went back to their hotel & had a couple of beers with them. I remember one of them roller skating around the hotel bar 'cos he had just been given them for a birthday present. The whole thing seemed somewhat surreal - partly by meeting the band & partly going to a concert with my mother - not her usual scene, but she seemed to revel in it.

More on Big Joe... This is the clock tower at Birmingham University. I took my son Sebe there for a University open day. He wants to study Biochemistry next year & this is one of his potential choices.

Forgot to take my camera, but the camera on the iPhone 4 actually pretty good. Another pic in the comments.

Oh yeah... the lyrics:

You're working at your leisure to learn the things you'll need

The promises you make tomorrow will carry no guarantee

I've seen your qualifications, you've got a Ph.D.

I've got one art O level, it did nothing for me

Working for the rat race

You know you're wasting your time

Working for the rat race

You're no friend of mine

You plan your conversation to impress the college bar

Just talking about your Mother and Daddy's Jaguar

Wear your political T-shirt and sacred college scarf

Discussing the worlds situation but just for a laugh

You'll be working for the rat race

You know you're wasting your time

Working for the rat race

You're no friend of mine

Working for the rat race

You know you're wasting your time

Working for the rat race

You're no friend of mine

Just working at your leisure to learn the things you don't need

The promises you make tomorrow will carry no guarantee

I've seen your qualifications, you've got a Ph.D.

I've got one art O level, it did nothing for me

Working for the rat race

You know you're wasting your time

You're working for the rat race

You're no friend of mine

Musically Challenged Serendipity

The list this week included the band Drive By Truckers, which happened to be playing this week at the theater two blocks from me.

Drive By Truckers - Outfit

I did not go to the show, but I thought this song was great.

Yes, it is a little tricky standing in the middle of the street sometimes, but luckily the traffic moves slow here.

A genuine smile. Somewhere along yesterday's evening, I started to just believe again that things will be alright. And today, I truly believed that. I listened to feel good music at work, we had cinco de mayo celebrations at work, and no matter the little things that popped up, a-fuckin'-gain, I didn't let it shake me. B/c sort of like this song, I'll do what I gotta do, when I have to, if I have to, but really until then, I'll be ok. Things will be ok.

I took a knife and cut out her eye

I took it home and watched it wither and die

Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile

That's why she sleeps with one eye open

That's the price she paid

I said, hey, girl with one eye

Get your filthy fingers out of my pie

I said, hey, girl with one eye

I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry

I slipped my hand under her skirt

I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt

Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt

That's why you sleep with one eye open

That's the price you paid

~Girl With One Eye by Florence And The Machine

For Musically Challenged

Got shackles on my words so tight

Fear can make you compromise

Fast enough it's hard to hide

Sometimes I want to disappear

(Raise up to your ability)

Can't stand while I disappear

Run around before i'm filled with fear

Like a glue cause my life is filled with red

Focus on your ability

Focus on your ability

Now focus on your ability

Focus on your ability

Gain again what they want to steal

Gain again what they want to steal

Gonna gain again what they want to steal

Gain again what they want to steal

Musically Challenged: Foster The People - Houdini

BAM! Week 2

Roxy Music are an English art rock group formed in 1971 by Bryan Ferry, who became the group's lead vocalist and chief songwriter. The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion). Former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and "treatments"), and Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin). Although the band took a break from group activities in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have toured together intermittently since that time.

Roxy Music attained popular and critical success in the UK, Europe and Australia during the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their debut album, Roxy Music (1972).[1] The band was highly influential, as leading proponents of the more experimental, musically sophisticated element of glam, as well as a significant influence on early English punk music. They also provided a model for many New Wave acts and the experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. The group is distinguished by their visual and musical sophistication and their preoccupation with style and glamour.[2] Ferry and co-founding member Eno have also had influential solo careers, the latter becoming one of the most significant record producers and collaborators of the late 20th century.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Roxy Music #98 on its "The Immortals – 100 The Greatest Artists of All Time" list.[3]

A new studio album, which would have been their ninth, began recording in 2005. It would have been Roxy's first record with Brian Eno since 1973, who wrote two songs for it as well as played keyboards.[4] However, Bryan Ferry eventually confirmed that material from these sessions would be released as a Ferry solo album, with Eno playing on "a couple of tracks,"[5] and that he doesn't think they'll record as Roxy Music again.[6] Subsequently, this was confirmed by the announcement of a solo Bryan Ferry album, entitled Olympia.

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.

Tamara was a musically gifted girl and holder of the Heart Stone. She trained three baby magical animals - Cleo (a unicorn), Sugar (a dragon), and Spike (a panther). In the second season, she got her own zebracorn named Shadowsong.

Thank you John for taking me along!
