Two weeks in NOLA for the mardi gras 2017
Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.
In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.
They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.
In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

Heroes push us to excel. Their will, courage, and sacrifice can bring out the best in the world around them.
Fittingly, on their fifth full-length album, The Last Hero, hard rock juggernaut Alter Bridge pursue a level of excellence inspired by timeless heroism. Making the record became something of a personal quest for the quartet—Myles Kennedy [vocals, guitar], Mark Tremonti [guitar, vocals], Brian Marshall [bass], and Scott Phillips [drums]. In 2013, the band reached an elevated creative and critical milestone with Fortress. It bowed at #12 on the Billboard Top 200, moving over 30,000 copies first-week and earning unanimous tastemaker praise. The record garnered perfect scores from Total Guitar and KERRANG! as well as acclaim from Billboard, The Guardian, Loudwire, Ultimate Guitar, and many more. In between sold out tours in Europe and North America, the guys appeared on VH1 and graced the cover of Classic Rock Magazine who labeled Fortress, “The best thing they’ve ever done,” while Eddie Trunk called it, “A top 10 album of the last 10 years.” When it came time to write new music, the musicians collectively raised the bar yet again.
“Every time we do a record, my only goal is for people to simply think it’s better than the previous one,” declares Mark. “We pushed ourselves so hard last time, and we knew were going to push ourselves much harder here. When we brought material in, it had to outdo Fortress.”
“We always strive for that,” agrees Myles. “While recognizing where we’ve come from, we wanted to expand what Alter Bridge is. This record is definitely an exploration of the hero theme—whether it be the lack of heroes, the need for heroes, or a tribute to heroes. There’s a story in there.”
Myles wrapped up touring with Slash, and Mark finished up a successful run supporting his second solo album Cauterize in late 2015. By January 2016, the four members congregated back in Orlando with longtime producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette [Slash, Trivium]. Over the next four months, they diligently assembled and tracked the 13 songs comprising The Last Hero.
“Because we have very finite windows of time to put these records together, it’s nonstop when we regroup,” explains Myles. “Each writer is very involved.”
“We’d work all day in the studio, and Myles and I would go back to my house and come up with ideas all night,” recalls Mark. “We set up camp in my kids’ playroom with a Garage Band system to prepare for the next day. It was intense.”
Constantly progressing, the boys decided to employ some fresh techniques, utilize more alternate tunings and even recorded on a seven-string guitar for the first time.
“We don’t want to put out the same thing over and over again,” Tremonti continues. “We want to keep everyone guessing. There are three new tunings, and that helped keep us inspired. I’d never recorded on a seven-string until now. This is the first record where Myles planned out his solos beforehand. In the past, he would wing it with this magical, improvisational touch. What he did is amazing. Me and Slash have both said he’s the best guitar player in our bands.”
“We weren’t afraid to travel certain roads we might’ve been hesitant to venture down on the last two albums,” adds Myles. “As a result, some of the songs are more uplifting and melodic. There was certainly a psychological shift. We embraced the past. You hear elements of each record throughout our history.”
The Last Hero opens with the urgent, untamed, and undeniable “Show Me A Leader.” Following an intricate clean intro, the song gallops into a rapturous chant punctuated by fierce and fiery seven-string shredding. It’s a clarion call for the next phase of Alter Bridge.
“Lyrically, it definitely reflects the frustration a lot of people are feeling with the current state of the world,” admits Myles. “The world is looking for trustworthy effective leadership and not this undignified dog and pony show that’s really made a mockery of our system.”
“It’s indicative of our process,” Mark goes on. “Myles had this guitar intro that I loved, and I had the chorus. We put them together. The words call out for a proper leader.”
“My Champion” climbs from a swell of delay into an impressive guitar lick before Myles delivers one of the most spirited choruses of their career to date. “The lyric was actually inspired by thinking back to my situation as a kid,” he remembers. “I was this really small, underdeveloped kid who had to work extremely hard to keep up with all of my peers. It was very frustrating. I would hear a lot of words of encouragement from parents, coaches, or teachers though. A lot of those things were stored away, and they manifested themselves in this song. I’ve been able to apply some of those concepts in my life a thousand times over since then.”
Then, there’s “Poison in Your Veins,” which channels an airy refrain through a whirlwind of guitar Sturm und Drang. “This song showcases the inner dialogue in one’s head; serving as reminder to live life courageously, take chances, and ultimately believe in yourself. It’s not a new theme for us, but definitely one that can never be overstated," explains Myles.
Tremonti adds: “We wanted to make it as musically interesting as possible, while preserving a hook.”
“Losing Patience” tempers a bombastic drum groove with an ominous and poignant proclamation, while the ballad “You Will Be Remembered” evinces another side of the sound. “It’s a tribute to heroes like anybody who’s served the country or community,” Myles remarks. “The song touches on the ultimate sacrifice soldiers, police, and firemen are willing to give.”
Nearing seven minutes, the title track and finale ebbs and flows between hypnotic heaviness and an instrumental elegance that’s cinematic in scope. “That’s probably my favorite track,” he states. “Whether it’s today, 100 years ago, or 1,000 years ago, being a human on this planet is never easy. We’re going through a lot. The need for heroes, positive influences, and good leadership is obvious, but we definitely need it right now.”
“Fans love the epic side of Alter Bridge,” Mark says. “We tried to stretch the boundaries again. The arrangement isn’t typical at all. It’s an important moment for the record.”
Ultimately, Alter Bridge heroically deliver for fans worldwide and rock music at large.
“It’s good to be back in the Alter Bridge battle,” Myles leaves off. “Every time we do a record, I’m reminded of how great it is to have this passionate and loyal audience. We don’t take it lightly. We consider it an honor that people let us into their lives that way.”

Funny thing is, I have never been a Phil Collins fan, but I heard this song a few weeks ago and realized I love it. I had heard it several times before, but it was like I was hearing it for the first time.
Then, a couple of weeks later, it appeared in a Musically Challenge list. I have been singing it and playing it a lot lately, and my boyfriend was like "oh yeah I love that song", so he downloaded the sheet music (above) and has been playing it on the piano the past couple of weeks.
So sorry this is late for Musically Challenged, but I was determined to use this song!
As far as my 365 - I am not neglecting this project or anything. My life has been super busy the past couple of weeks, and my 365 sucks right now. But I'm back and I'm ready to post an annoying amount of uploads and carry on (but with better images from now on)!

As part of my until-now woeful participation in the Musically Challenged group, I am trying to delve into pairings of images with songs that are not necessarily contemporary. Music that often predates iPods, Walkmen and sometimes even LPs - but nonetheless has meaning that transcends ages and generations. My first attempt involved the work of Georges Bizet.
This time around, I offer a selection that has touched a chord of hope in two different cultures in two distinct ways.
The traditional Irish song "Danny Boy", I feel, is meant to instill a love for a homeland. It seems to me that this song serves as a promise: no matter where the singer goes, he affirms in this song that he will always take a part of home with him.
When I was a youngster, I first heard the acclaimed African-American gospel artist Andre Crouch take the melody to this standard and add to it a different affirmation. In this version, "He Looked Beyond My Faults (And Saw My Needs)", the singer is making a commitment to and praising a Savior who has made it possible for the singer and anyone else who so believed to inhabit a very special future homeland.
Do you have to be Irish to have a love of the land that shaped you? Do you have to be of African descent to to look forward to a better land?
Of course not. Of course not. All you need is a desire to find yourself safe at home, whether that place is on Earth or on some higher plane.
I am grateful I have never met a human being of any size, shape, color, ethnicity or value system who could not find room in his or her heart for home.

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from Zeus and Calliope?s musically inclined son. Founding members include musician/actor Harry Connick, Jr. and his father, Harry Connick, Sr., former New Orleans district attorney. With their first parade in 1994, the Krewe of 700 members established itself as a super Krewe. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The krewe?s throws include a number of sought-after items, including light-up Orpheus medallion beads, three different types of doubloons - Captain's, Krewe, & Musical Legends, four-foot-long stuffed dragons, and their prized throw is a custom decorated tambourine.
Notable floats include the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand. There?s also the Smoking Mary, an eight-unit float that looks like a steam locomotive. And everyone loves the three-unit, 139-foot Orpheus Leviathan Float, the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Over the years, Orpheus monarchs have included Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino, Sandra Bullock, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Laurence Fishburne, Forrest Whitaker, Brad Paisley, Anne Rice and Toby Keith.
Unlike many Carnival events which are members-only, visitors are allowed to buy tickets to the black-tie Orpheuscapade, a musical extravaganza after the parade in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

[My week came up sooner than originally scheduled in the Musically Challenged group. So here goes.]
I don't watch my favorite shows. I invest in them. If you're not convinced, consider this: currently, between my DVR and videotapes recorded over the last 20+ YEARS, I have over 90 hours of "Hill Street Blues" episodes. (Naturally, there are many duplicates...)
So last year, I got hooked on the cable show "Leverage" with Timothy Hutton. Drama, comedy and action - the elements of life, the elements of a good show.
As is cool original music. In two episodes so far, a simple yet poignant song written by a member of the production crew has been featured. As I Googled frantically to try to find ANY information about the song, I learned there were hundreds of other fans of the show desperate to learn about the same song.
There is a reason for that. Using,unlike me in most posts, a minimum of words, the artist touches on life's perpetual struggle and the catalyst that keeps us struggling: hope.
I'm really glad I found this great show. But I'm especially glad I found this song. Especially as some of the clouds and darkness START to fade from some aspects of my life.

Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is an opéra bouffon (a form of operetta), or opéra féerie in its revised version, by Jacques Offenbach. The French text was written by Ludovic Halévy and later revised by Hector-Jonathan Crémieux.
The work, first performed in 1858, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta.[1Offenbach's earlier operettas were small-scale one-act works, since the law in France did not allow certain genres of full-length works. Orpheus was not only longer, but more musically adventurous than Offenbach's earlier pieces.
This also marked the first time that Offenbach used Greek mythology as a backdrop for one of his buffooneries. The operetta is an irreverent parody and scathing satire on Gluck and his Orfeo ed Euridice and culminates in the risqué Galop infernal ("Infernal Galop") that shocked some in the audience at the premiere. Other targets of satire, as would become typical in Offenbach's burlesques, are the stilted performances of classical drama at the Comédie-Française and the scandals in society and politics of the Second French Empire.
The "Infernal Galop" from Act II, Scene 2, is famous outside classical circles as the music for the "can-can" (to the extent that the tune is widely, but erroneously, called "can-can") . Saint-Saëns borrowed the Galop, slowed it to a crawl, and arranged it for the strings to represent the tortoise in The Carnival of the Animals.

The first performance of the two-act, opéra bouffe version took place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris on 21 October 1858 and ran for an initial 228 performances. It then returned to the stage a few weeks later, after the cast had had a rest. For the Vienna production of 1860, Carl Binder provided an overture that became famous, beginning with its bristling fanfare, followed by a tender love song, a dramatic passage, a complex waltz, and, finally, the renowned can-can music.[3]
In America the work played in German at the Stadt Theatre, on Broadway, from March 1861.[4] It had its Czech premiere in 1864, under Adolf Čech.[5] It had a run of 76 performances at Her Majesty's Theatre, in London, beginning on 26 December 1865, in an adaptation by J. R. Planché.[6]
A four-act version, designated as an opéra féerie, was first performed at the Théâtre de la Gaîté on 7 February 1874.[7] (This has proved less popular over time than the original two act version.)
Sadler's Wells opera presented an English version by Geoffrey Dunn beginning on 16 May 1960.[8] In the 1980s, English National Opera staged the opera freely translated into English by Snoo Wilson with David Pountney. The production was notable for its satirical portrayal of the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as the character Public Opinion. The first performance was at the Coliseum Theatre in London on 5 September 1985.[9] The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company performed the work in the 1990s.
Critical appreciation
In the eyes of Clément and Larousse] the piece is une parodie grotesque et grossière (a coarse and grotesque parody), full of vulgar and indecent scenes that give off une odeur malsaine (an unhealthy odor). In the opinion of Piat, however, Offenbach's Orphée is, like most of his major operettas, a bijou (jewel) that only snobs will fail to appreciate. The piece was not immediately a hit, but critics' condemnation of it, particularly that of Jules Janin, who called it a "profanation of holy and glorious antiquity," only provided vital publicity, serving to heighten the public's curiosity to see the piece.

Le French cancan est une forme de spectacle musical et chorégraphique apparu dans la seconde moitié du xixe siècle.
Historique
Les bals sont très fréquentés au xixe siècle à Paris, en particulier durant la période du Carnaval. Dans ce cadre apparaît le cancan ou « coincoin », qui se danse en couple. C'est une danse licencieuse, car à l'époque les femmes portaient une robe longue, des jupons et une culotte fendue. Lever ainsi la jambe, la robe, était très osé et érotique.
En 1850, Céleste Mogador, vedette du bal Mabille lance le cancan, une nouvelle danse d'environ huit minutes au rythme endiablé, sur des airs entraînants de la musique festive de danses de Paris au xixe siècle1. Faisant preuve d'équilibre et de souplesse à la limite de l'acrobatie, les danseuses de cancan dans leur costume affriolant font perdre la tête au Tout-Paris.
En s'inspirant de cette danse, le producteur anglais Charles Morton invente une nouvelle forme de ballet2 : le French cancan. Censé émoustiller le public anglophone par l'évocation de la liberté sexuelle française et exécuté principalement sur des airs de Jacques Offenbach (notamment le célèbre Galop infernal d'Orphée aux Enfers), figure emblématique du Second Empire, le French cancan connaît encore de nos jours un succès qui ne se dément pas, associant dans l'esprit des spectateurs Paris, ses music-halls (comme les Folies Bergère ou le Moulin Rouge) et sa « joie de vivre ».

I was so excited when I saw this song on the song list for Musically Challenged. This is one of my favorite summer tunes. It brings back a one of my most fun summer memories of the Jersey Shore. When I was in jr. high, my best friend Lori and I went to Belmar with her older brother. It was one of our first independent jaunts. We had a blast on the beach and then even more fun at the boardwalk. Anthony won this Steve Miller Band 8 track tape. all of a sudden a huge down pour started and within an hour the streets of Belmar were flooded. It felt like hours to get out of town, the whole time we were listening to The Joker. This is my grinner, lover, sinner, joker, smoker and midnight toker ;o)

For musically talented Barossa Valley local, Sam Brittain, story-telling is exactly that. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Our Shining Skin’ on June 1, 2012, the path to success for the gifted and independent musician has transformed into a never-ending road. First picking up a guitar at the age of three and additionally turning his hand to the piano and drums,
In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Ryan Adams. Sam supported close friend and musical influence, Mike Rosenberg (Passenger) at Adelaide-based Fowlers Live, as an integral part of Mike’s ‘All the Little Lights’ album tour, a highlight of Sam’s career to date.
The recording of ‘Our Shining Skin’ saw Sam and his band work endlessly with the talented Barossa-based Jamie Blechynden of Stella Studios and VJ productions. Supported by BJ Barker (drums), Steve Flemming (bass) and Glen Wagland (engineer), tracking the backbone of all 12 songs took a mere two days to complete. ‘Our Shining Skin’ quickly earned impressive reviews and was labelled as a ‘formidable and wide spreading resume’ for Sam (Timber and Steel, August, 2012).
Kicking off an Australian tour, Sam officially released the highly anticipated album at a sold out show on June 9, 2012, held at the Chateau’s acoustically brilliant ‘Long Room’. In June and July 2012, Sam crossed the country, delighting crowds and building his fan base in Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin and Adelaide, including an unforgettable sold out show with Sam’s full band at the prominent Adelaide venue, the Promethean Theatre on September 27, 2012.
Marking the beginning of what’s set to be a milestone year and following a hugely successful first tour, Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100.
2013 saw Sam embark on a 16 date tour once again supporting new age folk music legend Mike Rosenberg (Passenger).
NOLA 2017 - Mardi gras - Krewe of Orpheus
Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.
In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.
They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.
In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

I've been going through a tough time with dealing with the fact that Bear needs to be put to sleep. He started grinding his teeth today, a sign of pain.
but there is light at the end of the tunnel and I know he'll go to rainbow bridge soon and be happy.

I must have a magnetic radar that directs my eye to beautiful lighted areas like this one. you will never guess where i found this beauty...... by the clubhouse in my neighborhood as I was driving home. I was like: OH!
anyways, me and La Salsera ♥ are going to train together via internet. She's going to be my training buddy, She has to train for a 5k feb 13, and I have to look stunning at my sister's wedding in August. my sister more or less said that it was up to me if i wanted to look ugly compared to the other girls in the bridal party. (bridezilla threatened me with the photographer!)
anyways I hope I can start small and work my way up to the crazy stuff. but for now i think I'll start my watching biggest loser re-runs while on the gazelle.
I can't wait to get back to school. I miss classes already. I cant wait to start service learning with my photography teacher. its almost like: Finally! I can do service learning that i like to do instead of i have to do!
anyways I have to begin a "how to use Flickr" tutorial for Mac and PC. if there is one that already exists.... show me! thanks!
