Day 421 - Day 056
“It seems a shame you waste your time on me. It seems a lot to waste your time for me”
Me In Honey: R.E.M., Out of Time
As many of the songs on this album were lyrically personal to Michael Stipe, this song was very personal to me. Musically, it is one of the easiest songs one would ever know. Vocally Mike Mills, Michael Stipe and Kate Pierson from the B-52’s just nail their pitches. Lyrically, it was amazing for what I was going through at the time. (The irony of this was that it was the last track on this album, and the last track on their last album, Green, really affected me as well. What is it with their ending tracks?)
This album came out my senior year of High School. I was deeply in love with this girl but we were at odds for reasons I couldn’t understand. To this day I do not understand why we suddenly imploded. But through the dissension of our relationship we had all these bizarre rules put out there that I didn’t understand. I ended up going to my Senior Year prom with a snobby stranger and I had a miserable time. I was lost in life and the relationship, and I just didn’t get it… When I didn’t understand the rules I thought it was because of me… like the line I thought I was a waste of her time.
Truth is, I wasn’t- but it took me years to find that out. I remember listening to this song over and over and out of all the lines- that one always stabbed at me- stuck out at me like a thorn. It isn’t something I harp on, in fact she and I have become great friends over the years. And as sad and pathetic as that period of self drowning may seem, I am thankful for it because it really shaped me.
To this day I can sing along with Stipe and really get some of my emotions out. I can remember who I am now, and who I was then… and chuckle at the things I thought, and smile at the distances I have traveled since then.
*** Artist Notes ***
Yes, this actually is honey… sugar free honey to be exact. How the hell does that exist???
Lyrics:
I sat there looking ugly
Looking ugly and mean
I knew what you were saying
You were saying to me
Baby's got some new rules
Baby, said she's had it with me
It seems a shame you waste your time on me
It seems a lot to waste your time for me
Left me to love
What it's doing to me
There's a lot of honey in this world
Baby, this honey's for me
You've got to do what you do
Do it with me
It seems a shame you waste your time for me
Knocked silly
Knock flat
Sideways down
These things they pick you up
And they turn you around
Say your piece
Say you're sweet for me
It's all the same to share the pain with me
It's all the same. Save the shame for me
Baby's got some new rules
Baby, says she's had it with me
There's a fly in the honey
And baby's got a baby with me
That's a part
That's a part of me
What about me?
What about me?
