It's Panorama time. This is the view from the lower lookout point at the Makapuu Lighthouse. This pano is made from 4 vertical shots, 6 exposures each. I'm not sure which I like better, verto or pano, but I'll give you guys both so you can decide.
Each frame is an HDR tonemapped from 6 exposures and blended with 2 of them. Then auto stitched in CS3. Curves, contrast, highlight/dodge tool, unsharp, and noise ninja. Oh and adjusted the Lens Distortion in cs3 to fix the curved horizon.
It was funny to watch as 1 baby was already in the hole and another was trying to squeeze in. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
On a beautiful, May evening, I got word that the UP was running this (mostly) Military Ammo train down the Kansas Sub towards Topeka. In true PSR-era fashion, this train was running as the KCXNPX (I believe), and had 9300' of both military AND manifest traffic. OK, whatever.
For whatever reason, they had to pick up a pair of units from the yard, giving us this quartet of elephant-style GE's, complete with a SMOKING AC44 on the point. I've never enjoyed these wingless UP units, but the 7272 was putting on quite the show as it pulled through CP Z070, so I'm officially here for this.

The annual trek of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway's power to Tate can be seen here in the woods south of Blue Ridge. This move is made every year in late January so the engines can have their annual inspections conducted at the GNRR maintenance shop in Tate before returning in time for the start of season in March.
While these moves are typically only done with just the engines, what makes the move south & the return trip north special is that they are only times of the year where the "Ellijay Block," the portion of the Hook & Eye between Blue Ridge & Whitestone, see any traffic. With the demise of the lumber business that traveled by rail that managed to survive into the 2000s, there were no freight customers north of Whitestone left, so the line got demoted to excepted-track, only to be used for power moves. That makes these moves highly sought after & I've been fortunate to now catch it 2 years in a row. 1-25-22
Time for bed!
Yet when I get to my bed I find something other then my stuff animals.
Maybe we can share?

Norfolk & Western No.611 moves a freight before dawn in Lancaster County.
Taken on a Lerro Productions-led photo charter at the Strasburg Railroad.
I had to move this weekend-- a mere three blocks, but it sure seemed like an epic journey with all of my stuff in tow. My new pad is smaller and trying to get everything to fit is sort of like doing the most complicated jigsaw puzzle ever. I've been unsuccessful so far.
While moving is The Worst Thing Ever, there was one really cool thing that came out of it-- I realized that I am very very lucky to have a lot of great, stand-up people in my life to whom I owe a huge debt of thanks (and my future promised moving labor). A thousand thank yous: Pat/a nameless yeast, Brett/bsivad, Eric/epmd, John/F1.4, Anita/Miscelena, the irrepressable Snelson, and Jason. You guys all totally rock.
Enjoyed spectacular Victoria Day fireworks from our rooftop :-)
*The image is a composite of the city skyline and fireworks captured from the same location, only in slightly different directions. Most of the fireworks were happening on the beaches (at the left from this scene), but I moved them into a better location, digitally :-)
When we feel stuck, look at the sky. The clouds remind us that everything changes.

Low tide affords some great opportunities to explore under the Memorial Bridge. I decided to shoot this scene using a long exposure to capture some of the movement in the clearing storm clouds overhead. As a result the boat and dock appear quite blurred as the waves moved them around over the course of the exposure.

A warm spring late afternoon in the Reeseville Marsh, has the arachnid population spreading out in force for the season. Millions of spiderlings spent the day ballooning from their birthplaces on the warm spring winds. Every year, this sure is a sight to behold.

There are many times I visit the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern only to see trains parked and no sign of movement. Days like this one keep me coming back, though, when the light is right and the railroad decides to run a train. The daily westbound Tracy to Huron manifest blasts out of Tyler, Minnesota behind four SD40-2s.

CSX 8840 and 470 take the M702 down out of Oak Point Yard through Harlem River Yard as the car inspector performs a roll by. As soon as the train comes to a stop the car inspector will perform one last roll by inspection and the train will be underway up to CP8 and wait for clearance onto the Hudson Line.
