Billy moved in with us yesterday and woke us up quite early this morning. What I thought was a distant car alarm turned out to be our new kitten. Billy is very active and loves to explore his new environment, as long as his batteries are charged that is. He has been introduced to our three resident cat ladies, who mainly watched him from a distance and hissed at him. So far today they have refused to come back in as long as this new thing is downstairs. I hope they'll come around in a few days.

There are many times I visit the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern only to see trains parked and no sign of movement. Days like this one keep me coming back, though, when the light is right and the railroad decides to run a train. The daily westbound Tracy to Huron manifest blasts out of Tyler, Minnesota behind four SD40-2s.
Siena, the Palio, its procession and traditions. During this beautiful parade, spectators lining the route are treated to colourful performances by flag bearers. The atmosphere is magical and the fervour enormous. A must-see!

50011 "Centurion" waits amongst the crowds at Carlisle on 31st October 1981 after arriving with Severnside Railtours "The Citadel Express" The train ran as 1Z38 the 04:00 Plymouth to Carlisle and return via Gloucester, BNS, Doncaster, Normanton & Skipton on the outward leg and Preston, BNS and Gloucester on the return.
A lasting memory is the run through Preston on the return with the driver giving it full bore through the canopied station, the place must have shook. The punters on the train were so impressed they had a collection for him which he was given at Birmingham New Street.
Unfortunately the former D411 was the first to be withdrawn which occurred on 24th February 1987, less than 19 years after in was new to Crewe depot on 19th March 1968. Upon withdrawal it was moved to Crewe Works and used as a power unit test bed until 1992 from where it was scrapped in September 1992.

Tule fog clears above Central Valley wetlands at dawn.
Despite viewing a couple of brilliant sunrises on our New Year’s photo jaunt, so far I have not really shared any actual sunrise photographs. It is time. We arrived here in foggy pre-dawn darkness on New Year’s Day. We assembled our gear and headed out on a network of levee roads through this wetlands terrain. Before long we came to a spot where the fog had thinned and we had a clear view to the east. We stopped and photographed the landscape and the intense pre-sunrise sky.
The experience of being out here before sunrise is profoundly removed from our day-to-day experience. Here time moves slowly or even seems to stop. The tule fog thins, leaving behind a faint, soft mist. Flocks of geese and cranes rise and circle, their cries echoing across the landscape. The light gradually increases in the eastern sky and here the outline of the distant Sierra Nevada is visible along the horizon.
