It may look like winter, but the maple trees are acting like it's Spring--it's time for tapping trees for sap that will be used to make maple syrup.
This week's theme for the Smile on Saturday group is 'Starts with S'.
The syrup is in the pot...😁.
Thanks for visiting.
Happy Smile on Saturday......

Simply done with the left. Mainly anyway. And I didn't have to use scissors for this, because they are difficult for left-handers. Just as many tools are not necessarily suitable to be used with left-hand use. Have you ever used a beveled spatula with your left hand? We are in the minority, but anyone who does everything with the left can understand it and may have noticed that the cup handle and spoon are oriented to the left here ... It was also always a big challenge for me, for example, throwing the sling ball or the shot put correctly – I always had to do everything the other way around. But in the high jump (the other way around) I was very good. Well – the Olympic Games are now over ;-) And I have arranged myself quite passably over the years, I don't want to complain ;-) Oh yes, and by the way ... this view from above shows my morning coffee with milk and a porridge-oatmeal-blueberry-maple-syrup-creation, topped with the rest of the milk foam from the coffee ;-) Very tasty.

Ah! Snacks! That is something in my diet that I am trying to tackle! Since Lockdown my love of sweet, sugary snacks has blossomed, along with my waistline! So finding alternatives has become urgent, and surprisingly difficult! Sugar, salt and fat are everywhere. My latest find is these nuts and seeds together with nori seaweed and maple syrup. I am hoping for great results, as rice cakes do get boring after a while!

Sometimes I get a wild notion to expand the mixture of oil and water. On a fairly sunny day I reached into my kitchen cabinets and pulled out several containers. Then I started adding ingredients to my mixture. Water, oil, balsamic vinegar and a touch of maple syrup gave me happy little bubbles that floated around as if stirred by a breeze. As the bubbles would collide, they would then break their outer wall and become a larger bubble. We should all be so comfortable bumping into new friends. A quick note....the image is even better when enlarged.
Continuing with the "phlebotomy" theme from my previous post, this is a high tech collection system for the sap from maple trees and eventual syrup production. It reminded me of an intravenous system. The tubing can be either gravity fed, i.e. on a hillside, or with a pumping system.

This is a 50 ml bottle of pure maple syrup. A sweet stocking stuffer that we haven’t cracked open yet. HMM ♥
I have always wondered about the typical tiny and useless handles on maple syrup bottles.
"The internet's favorite answer is that the handles are a remnant from when most jars were large earthenware containers. The handle's useful when you're carrying five pounds of liquid, but not so much when you can easily grab the whole bottle in the palm of your hand.
Nowadays, through the magic of marketing and nostalgia, tiny handles = real maple syrup to all of us, and companies keep putitng them on the bottle.
The tiny handle is an example of a skeuomorph, which is not only a fun word to say, but a really neat little piece of vocab. "
Steam rises from huge wood-fired pans of boiling sugar-maple sap behind Ronnie Moyers, owner of Laurel Fork Sapsuckers, a sugar camp in Highland County, Va., near the West Virginia state line. Moyers and his family tap more than 1,400 sugar maples each year; each 60 gallons of syrup collected yields but one gallon of maple syrup. ©2021 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com
Nice to see that some Vermonters still collect sap the old way. I realize it's labor intensive compared with gravity feed tubing, but it's still nice to see traveling down a back road. These sap buckets were in Weston, VT.

Autumn in the country advances in a predictable path, taking its place among the unyielding rhythms of the passing seasons. It follows the summer harvest, ushering in cooler nights, and shorter days, enveloping all of Lanark County in a spectacular riot of colour. Brilliant hues of yellow, orange and red exclaim, in no uncertain terms, that these are the trees where maple syrup legends are born. -
Arlene Stafford-Wilson
The crickets sang in the grasses. They sang the song of summer's ending, a sad monotonous song. "Summer is over and gone, over and gone, over and gone. Summer is dying, dying." A little maple tree heard the cricket song and turned bright red with anxiety. - E.B. White (Charlotte's Web)
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo❤️

It's Shrove Tuesday and I tried out buckwheat pancakes for the first time. They were very good with maple syrup and berries.
We spent a couple of days up in Ludlow, Vermont, and you can't spend time in that area without visiting the Vermont General Store in Weston! If ever in the area, and you want to kill an hour, or more, I highly recommend a visit! With so much to see (and photograph if you are so inclined) you will not be disappointed, I promise! Everything from penny candies to kitchen utensils, and hats and shirts to neat old toys. Local cheeses and other treats too, and there's stuff everywhere and in a great and pretty large post and beam store. And there's a nice old Advanced Design Chevy pickup outside full of flowers in the bed. The place is a winner...and I took a bunch of shots with many more to be posted. I hope you'll enjoy them!
A sugar shack (French: cabane à sucre), also known as sap shack, sap house, sugar house, sugar shanty or sugar cabin is an establishment, primarily found in Eastern Canada and northern New England. Sugar shacks are small cabins or groups of cabins where sap collected from maple trees is boiled into maple syrup.
I don't usually take food pictures. However, as I was having brunch I looked down at the spoon I had placed in my little cup of maple syrup. The deep reddish color of the syrup contrasted with the light playing in the bowl of the spoon containing the syrup. I seem to find beauty in the mundane a lot more these days. Or perhaps it was just the delicious meal with my family....

Sap house where the volunteer's boil the sap until it is reduced to maple syrup. Around 40 gallons of sap,,,sometimes 20 to 60 gallons of sap, are evaporated down to one gallon and a 67% to 68% sugar level is reached. Volunteers at Pioneer Village at Caesar Creek Lake burn firewood to boil the sap. The syrup is used in a fund raising pancake breakfast. A lot of hours and a lot of work.
A favourite way to start the day ... a pancake with little pieces of Belgian chocolate baked in. And maple syrup too!

Field of Gold
This month the theme for the FFF+ photo challenge was "Field of Gold". The theme was chosen by Gary.
I have chosen something a bit different then walking thorough a field of barley to create a field of gold on once plate.
Whenever I go to Wheelers Maple Sugar Camp, I can't seem to help myself form taking one more photo of the old maple sap buckets.

The Bradley family settled on Lake Ontario in Clarkson in the early 1800s. It is now a public museum. Their estate was in the middle of a maple grove, so one of the things the family produced was maple syrup. These pails, on the outside wall of the barn, are probably newer ones (no rusty holes) and the public is invited to tap syrup in the spring, To me, the pails look like art installation, especially with the shadows and contrast with rough wood planks.

It's a day of pancake making. I was up early to make these American pancakes for breakfast, crepes later :)
This is how gathering maple syrup is done in this day and age! Those thin little tubes bring the syrup downhill to a large holding tank and then it's off for processing. Sheep were another source of revenue for this farm.

My nephew has been in Vancouver in the last 6 months to chase and live his CG artist dream, he came back for a wedding and brought us all this beautiful Maple Syrup souvenir. He left this morning to go back to continue his dream, we're hoping he will reach goal soon and come home to us as soon as he can.
