When I first started using the 701HDV tripod head with my Opticron scope, from time to time I found I could only load or unload the scope after a lot of vigorous jiggling around, which I just assumed was some tolerance-related problem. However, I eventually got around to having a look at the design of the latch arrangements, and I soon realised what I was doing wrong:

The locking latch is freely pivoted and not spring-loaded, and as its leading edge is blunt as opposed to angled, if it happens to be in the position shown in Photo 1, it blocks the movement of the QRP along the slider. This problem is easily overcome by ensuring that the latch is fully pushed into its housing before attempting to load the scope.

When the QRP is pushed forward towards the end stop (eg to balance the scope with a camera fitted), then the safety latch can be out of the QRP channel (Photo 2), and so if the release button is pressed before the QRP is moved back, this can stop its retraction. This problem is easily overcome by centralising the QRP in the slider before pressing the release button.

Picked up a new head for the tripod today (I love tax refund season). This one is the Trigger Grip Manfrotto 322RC2 Ball Head. Not the best for panning action shots, but really great for quick adjustments while out and about.

Manfrotto tripod and my 10-20mm, perfect for this sort of thing! The Manfrotto was rock solid with my passenger seat down!

The 725B tripod from Manfrotto has an integrated ballhead.

For the money (around $100) the tripod is extremely well built and the head is of decent quality.

Of course, carrying capacity is limited - but it holds the D40 very well. The D200 is a little bit too heavy for this tripod - but I have a different tripod for that camera now

Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 Carbon Fibre Tripod with 804RC2 Head and 80mm Opticron Scope.

This shows the tripod with its centre column arranged horizontally, which allows the scope to be positioned closer to the ground.

I use it as part of a system with various heads depending on the application (701RC2 & 128LP for video, 141 for stills, it came with a 390RC and I occassionally use a 342 micro ball head with it too)

I've pimped it up by means of a 438 leveller (essential for video and panoramas) spikes and carry strap."

These come chrome plated or black enameled. I like the black. These clips can be ordered as a pair through Amazon, Adorama, or B&H, and typically cost between about $15 per pair. You'll need two pairs per light, for a total of 4 pairs.
