The finished work. I delivered it for the exhibition today.
The frame for the embroidered picture is made from the larger cigar box. Pa was my maternal grandfather and he caught the tram to and from work every day. I remember the trams of my youth as having a men's compartment filled with reeking smoke. My mother would never allow us to stray in there!

Water-soluble stabilizer is your friend! Helps you make beautiful things like this. Design by Vickie Poirier, threads are Kreinik metallic threads on a sewing machine.
This piece started from the idea of using monotone yellows. I decided to explore the theme of daffodils partly because of the Great Daffodil Appeal for Marie Curie Nurses (held in March in UK) and partly because of the time of year and the hopes of spring. The daffodils weren’t out in the garden at the time I made the piece but there were a few "shop bought" in peoples windows and I could look at online images, and remember drawing them previously. All the material I used in the piece were already in my work room as I am trying to restrict the range of materials I use to what I have to hand.
My first plan was to use cut fabric and soft edged appliqué technique but seeing a friends piece exploring the embellisher made me decide to try that as part of the construction of the piece. I cut a piece of canvas to a size which would fit in the 8” books. I triple stitched a little way in from the edge of the fabric so I could have a frayed edge. I cut scraps of fabric scrunching or folding them first to get random shapes. I use silk, cotton and space dyed velvet ( previously purchased). My original plan was just to fill the canvas with daffodil heads but I liked the first three and felt any more would confuse the design so I put in fiber and green fabric for a stalk and leaves. I was very pleased with design at this stage ( and photographed it in case I didn’t like the last stage). I decided a little free machining might give the piece line and definition without loosing its sketchy quality The piece is just under 8" square
