Crazy Tuesdays: Embroidery
Part of a colourful, machine-embroidered purse someone gave me years ago.
If you've been to Rockport, Mass, you are very familiar with the "Motif" . . . a famous landmark in the quaint artist/fishing village.
I wanted to send a *thank you* to my dearest 96 year old artist friend who sadly has had to live in Ohio, too far from her beloved New England seaside town. But, she was able to return for a *reunion* which we attended in September. Her daughters composed a wonderful *photo* book in commemoration of the event, "Celebrating Jane" . . . of which we received a copy.
So this was my way of expressing my appreciation!
This sassy new design, free through the end of May, is in honor of all the tough, beautiful, inspiring women in our lives.
Urban Threads stitcher Theresa contacted us awhile ago, asking if we could contribute to her team's fundraising for the Breast Cancer 3-Day in Tampa Bay, Florida. Participants in cities around the United States walk 60 miles, raising at least $2,300 apiece to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. The 2008 events raised more than $110 million. Now that's fighting like a girl.
Use it on creations for raffles or local fundraising events such as the ones Theresa's team is planning -- and stitch it for the admirably fierce women in your life.
... i don't really feel like sewing summer clothes yet. the weather outside is horrible wet and chilly, so i better sewed something cuddly yesterday: a DRĂœBER sweater in soft velvet fleece. and i remembered my first embroidered CAT which i neglected for so long!
i also made some WINONA pants out of olivegreen velvet corduroy... almost without any embellishment exept for some turquiose decorative stitching and ribbons at the borders. they're quite a cool basic.

On the Danube trip we were taken to a Folk Museum. A lady was creating wonderful machine embroidery on an old treadle sewing machine. Then a couple came to show us the local folk dancing and as you can see her clothes display some of the beautiful embroidery.

"We are all woven
of different colored threads
and strengths
and colors.
We are all a part of something bigger,
a very special part of something
that continues to evolve.
A more perfect union."

Freestyle machine embroidery combined with some hand stitching and applique bring back to life this vintage transfer ... add a verse from "Pirate Story" by RL Stevenson and we're ready for adventure!! New pattern for July issue of Bustle & Sew e-zine coming 28 June.
To keep my poor little ipod from becoming even more scratched and beaten than it already is, I made myself a little bunny cozy for it.

I have been working for some time on a large piece which will form my contribution to an exhibition in the summer in Bishops Castle in Shropshire.
It was originally going to be based on androgynist silhouettes with accompanying feminist text but recently the emphasis has been changing.
This is because I just want to make these exaggerated portraits and so I have been going with the flow.
Sometimes pieces just tell you where they want to go so for the time being I am just working from instinct and I will see how it all pans out.
The new (and possibly temporary) title is "The writing on the wall"
