I've been using my embroidery machine and made this sweatshirt for my 18 inch girls.
Claudia gets to model it today.
The stone is among several on the T shirt machine embroidered and appliqued with a Lunar Moth. That was last year, when I seemed to have had more time for sewing!
...and her survivors (in particular, me and my mom) are fond of embroidering this saying on household linens
The second piece in my Island series which has been inspired by my visit to Orkney and Shetland in 2019.
You never know what lurks beneath the waves.
The background is knitted silk waste, and on to it I have applied wire, machine embroidery, ceramics and glass

An exhibition piece which has been several months in the making.
It links Neolithic Orkney and the textile traditions of Shetland.
The traces left by Neolithic people and the essence of the culture and the environment of these two islands are combined in homage to people who live in isolation yet are joined together in a tight knit community.
The inspiration of the “Simmer Dim”, Taatit bed coverings, Maeshowe, twig writing, and the textile work of Niela Kalra are used here to give a flavour of an experience gathered during my 2019 stay.
Niela talked to me in her studio about her cultural heritage in lands far removed from Shetland and how feelings of isolation within a small community can influence current textile art.
In this piece I have used knitting, knotting, crochet, weaving, machine and hand embroidery, paint and ink to show how disparate materials can come together in a modern interpretation of age old subjects.
The woven background supports a machine embroidered surface which has been painted with reflective materials to suggest a season when there is little true darkness and also to reflect the light seen on the sea shore. The hooked and knotted circle using turban fabric and sari silk illustrates how two cultures and genders can integrate but still remain apart, and the structure reflects the cairn at Maeshowe and the light of the winter solstice which illuminates the central chamber. On its walls are examples of many runic inscriptions, two of which I have reproduced in wool.
Mixed media measuring about 3 feet square.
A second version for a workshop on the web. Its the first thing I've done this year. Velvet on a silk paper background with chiffon spirals. My apologies for 'repeating , ' but its quite different from the first.
Size Approx 18" by 12"
We’ve long been trying to prove that machine embroidery can be more than teddy bears and butterflies, and even more than that, a legitimate art in itself. Machine embroidery is not what you think. Don’t believe me? Take a closer look…
This piece the Crane Wife is an experiment in using commercial machine embroidery in a whole new way. Check out full details and some progress shots on our new blog!
Machine embroidery on knitting with hooking.
This is based on a quotation from Goethe - "The realisation of the self is only possible if one is productive, if one can give birth to one's own potentialities"
This is a large wall piece measuring 24inches by 36inches and is part of a series of work concerning the effects of ageing on creativity
I based the cartoon face on Graham Sutherland's Crucifixion in St Matthew's Church, Northampton, and underneath the embroidery I transcribed an article about sperm donors from "The Times".
The circle, which refers both to the reproductive and the creative cycles, is made by hooking hand dyed fabric through the knitted and stitched backgound. This is a traditional women's' craft which is now accorded art status, but has always been "trodden underfoot".
The knitted background forms a timeline from left to right showing how a person's'life has periods of intense creativity, interspersed with quiet, unproductive times
I like to use "women's crafts" to tell the story of women's issues
