University Innovation Fellows and local students came together for the Kent State University Regional Meetup November 6-8, 2015. Attendees explored The Fridge, a new co-working space on the second floor of the library; took part in a design thinking activity centered around academic advising processes; participated in a wearables make-a-thon at Kent State University Fashion School; and designed an exhibit of their projects in the MuseLab.

This Local Places for Nature Food Development project was designed and built by ground staff from the East Team from Newport City Homes. It is located in Alway and was a site for fly tipping. Most of this was cleared off site beforehand and was a blank slate. 60% of the perimeter is housing and 40% is a hedge. Once the vegetation was strimmed, the soil was shown to be very poor quality with lots of historic litter including broken glass and cans etc. This meant growing in the soil would be very dangerous and we decided all growing would be done in raised beds. This project came with 3 raised beds, but we managed to get a hold of a load of spare sleepers from Newport City homes and eventually built one extra large bed and a very long bed with the 2 x trellis. The trellis would also hide the shed at the north end of the space. We also built from these sleepers, five 2.4 m long benches which could sit a whole class of children. We also covered almost 40m2 of the area in wildflower turf and hope to increase the coverage of the area with seeds from the turf collected in Autumn 2022. The day we installed the seating area, it pured of rain and we ended up putting muddy footprints on the paths outside the space. These paths are access for the adjacent bungalows which house disabled tenants. This was a risk, so we needed to clean the paths, and cover the growing space with stones. With enough stone, we'd be able to mix this into the ground and create a firm surface to walk on. As such, we moved 14 tonnes of chippings from the car park, uphill to the site in a day (8th November). Lovell's, one of NCH's contractors, donated time and materials to build a concrete base for the shed and green house and a week later, we built these structures on the base. Finally, we planted some of the plants. built strimming guards for the apple trees (coming later in December), tidied up the site and engraved our names into one of the benches. Much fun was had by all. Good luck Newport City Homes. - Chris Partridge, 29th Nov, 2021.

LTG Mike Ferriter, CSM Earl Rice, MAJ Kniffen and COL Burns attended the second annual Armed Forces Day River Parade May 18 at the River Walk. They rode on the Army float along with Army South Commanding General MG Frederick Rudesheim and CSM Lynice Thorpe and members from the 323rd Army Band, "Fort Sam's Own." The parade is an annual event sponsored by the Paseo del Rio Association. Twenty-five professionally decorated floats travel down the River Walk, themed according to their participants - all branches of service, veterans of recent conflicts, and military support groups. The floats featured live entertainment from military groups, as well as local artists who wished to dedicate their talents to honor the troops.

In regards to tourism in Alberta, Banff, and Jasper National Parks take the cake and for good reason. There are countless pristine lakes and glacier covered mountains, with guided tours and all of the comforts one could ever imagine. With all of the hustle and bustle in the national parks, it is surprising that Kananskis, which borders Banff, sees only a fraction of the traffic of the National Parks, most of which are locals. Kananaskis shares many of the traits of the big parks. Tucked out of the way, this waterfall is only a short hike from the road. Gems like this are what make Kananaskis my favourite park to visit in Alberta..

Baker City's historic downtown is one of the largest intact turn of the 20th century historic districts in the American West with over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the downtown has been lovingly restored and the historic district is now a thriving downtown, home to numerous art galleries, restaurants, micro breweries and local independently owned shops.

With the hard work of the local Main Street organization Baker City Downtown, Baker City's historic downtown has undergone a renaissance in recent years and is developing a thriving art and music scene with numerous local restaurants, pubs and galleries routinely hosting live music throughout the downtown.

Stewart Brewing is one of only two remaining breweries in Edinburgh. Steve Stewart is a young and enthusiastic brewer not afraid to experiment with contemporary beers, which he produces in small batches to unique recipes.

I’m not a big ale drinker myself, but my beer-loving, CAMRA-devoted ex-publican companion was impressed and happily lugged a keg of Steve's IPA home.

Heywood - Safe4Summer

The initiative is part of the Government’s mission to restore and strengthen local policing in communities and reduce or prevent anti-social behaviour (ASB). As part of this, there will be a greater visibility of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers and partners as we work together across crime hot spot areas.

Kate Green, Deputy Mayor for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: "We’re determined to ensure Greater Manchester is a safer place for everyone. The Safer Streets Summer Initiative is a testament to our dedication to reducing crime and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.

“By continuing to work closely with our communities and partners, we aim to create an environment where everyone feels safe and can enjoy not only the summer but all year round and every year. We’ll be working hard to ensure our town centres are safe and welcoming for all.”

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle, GMP’s lead for Local Policing, said: “Our neighbourhoods are negatively impacted by various crimes such as the illegal use of e-bikes, drug dealing and other ASB.

“As a force, it’s our mission to listen to our community’s concerns and take action where crime is committed. Our proactive approach to tackling neighbourhood crime has meant that since 2021, we’ve reduced burglary by a third and vehicle crime by a quarter, thanks to the dedication of our local neighbourhood teams, working closely with partners across the region.

“Over the summer months, they will be focusing on increasing engagement with our communities to listen and respond to their concerns. Residents and business owners will also see an increase in the visibility of officers and partners, as we work together to ensure a safe summer for all. This isn’t about trying to spoil people’s fun over the summer months, it is making sure everyone can enjoy themselves without feeling unsafe or being hurt.

“We welcome the Home Office initiative, which perfectly aligns to the neighbourhood policing model our force implemented locally two years ago. Safe4Summer is the perfect opportunity to highlight the strength of our partnerships in Greater Manchester, and our determination to minimise crime and disorder and to ensure Greater Manchester is a safer and more desirable place for all.”

TravelSafe Partnership Manager at Transport for Greater Manchester, Kate Green, said: “While the vast majority of people using the Bee Network do so safely and responsibly, we know that crime and anti-social behaviour increases over school holidays, and that is not something we will tolerate.

“We work hard every day to keep people safe, whether that’s through our engagement programme or the many proactive operations that take place. We will have an increased presence across the Bee Network to prevent and deter incidents, helping people to travel and enjoy their summer safely and with confidence.”

In 2023, Greater Manchester Police made a commitment that every district ward has a named local police officer, and we would keep communities informed through our use of the community messaging service, Bee in the Loop, which provides the latest news on events and incidents straight to your email inbox.

In April 2025, we welcomed the opportunity to further strengthen our neighbourhood offer, with an increase in numbers of neighbourhood officers by 176, to help GMP to continue to deliver in tackling crime and working with partners and communities to keep our streets safe.

To receive free direct email alerts about how your Neighbourhood Policing Team is keeping your area safe, sign up to Bee in the Loop - www.beeintheloop.co.uk.
