This week I visited Battersea Fire Station to praise the excellent work of their team - and announce an additional £19 million to help tackle future emergencies.
The funding will be used to improve the rescue of people from collapsed buildings as well as decontamination of the public. The money - which will cover the cost of protective clothing for Firefighters, as well as training on dealing with hazardous substances - comes on top of the £1bn already committed to purchasing specialist equipment for dealing with major incidents.
Many Wandsworth residents may take the Battersea Fire Service for granted, but they have experience of helping at major train disasters and collapsed buildings. They are also trained to act in the event of a terrorist attack, chemical accident or gas leak. We are fortunate to have them as part of our local fire service, and we should all be proud of the specialist work they do.

As I was walking quietly through some local woods today I heard some faint tweeting in the trees and undergrowth. Stopping to try and locate where it was coming from I was provided with an amazing sight of 4 newly fledged Nuthatches attempting to use their little wings for the very first time. Some attempts at flying failed and a fledgling would fall to the soft ground, but in seconds it would be up and onto a tree trunk to climb and try again. I spent some time watching and photographing without disturbing them and was even lucky enough to watch a parent provide a tasty snack. Nature and wildlife is just brilliant.
Feline, Tijn and I spend a weekend camping at Pulau Ubin. Tent, little stove, mountain biking, climbing up hill tops, walking through mangroves, the works.
A few benches, but mostly plastic lawn chairs... makes it tough to sit in the same spot when the ocean gets rocky.

Unrenumbered former BN SD40-2 #8013 has just arrived at Springfield with the East Local - M-SPMSPM. The East Local is a turn job that works the Cuba Sub as far as necessary (possibly Dixon). This is an off day for the South Local and an example of the power utilization for the jobs around Springfield.
