On June 4, 2010, the Rancho Cucamonga Library celebrated the rich local history of our city by having a Local History Cultural Arts Night.
The focus of the event was to debut our digital storytelling project, which was funded by a grant by the California State Library and Library Foundation. In addition to our stories, we also featured the first *and* current mayors of Rancho Cucamonga, exhibits and displays from local historical societies, a vintage fire truck, California history-related programs and crafts for children, and local authors from Rancho Cucamonga. We also opened our new Local History room as well.
All in all, a great event!

I was out and about not long after sunrise on the recent May bank holiday weekend. As usual I was chasing the light with a view to landscapes, I was on my usual patch on the hilltops west of Huddersfield, above Meltham and Marsden. I’m still getting over foot surgery so my walking is restricted a bit and I was sat in the pickup watching the light when I noticed three hares chasing around, occasionally stopping to box. I decided to go back after breakfast with a longer lens and see if I could catch up with them again. Initially I used a 300mm 2.8 with 1.4 and 2x convertors. I had some success over the next few days with this. In the end I decided to use a large and very heavy 500mm and monopod. I tried the convertors but the quality dipped so I reverted back to just the 500mm but also using it freehand, no support. The more I use it the better I get-like most things in life I guess. I spent the rest of the short holiday weekend in the sun photographing lapwings, their chicks, curlew and hares, getting a suntan at the same time. I’ve ended up on a bit of a mission, it looks like this will be this summer’s challenge.
Within days I had seen deer, owls, heron as well as the lapwings and curlews etc. I wasn’t always able to get a decent shot as I was often driving at the time. I’m on a learning curve now and the results are getting better. I’ve learnt a lot about the birds and animals that I’m stalking and I’ve had to start and study the camera autofocus choices available and experiment with them. Fortunately the weather has been ok for a couple of weeks, which is unusual around here these days. There are hundreds of lapwings guarding their eggs and some with chicks, oystercatchers, a variety of ducks and of course grouse, seeing as these moors are shooting moors. The grouse are favoured at the expense of everything else, anything that is a threat or competition won’t be treated favourably by the shooting fraternity, they certainly don’t like scrutiny and over the years have made entry to the moors in certain parts as difficult as is legal-or perhaps that’s just the perception of some of the rest of us who watch these things from a distance.

TWU Local 208 stormed the Columbus, Ohio capitol building to defend jobs against driverless bus technology, which would take away driver and mechanic jobs from TWU members. TWU Local 208 President Andrew Jordan gave vital testimony to the transportation committee on behalf of TWU members who showed up in full force at the hearing and to lobby legislators. I spent an amazing afternoon exploring the local zoo. While I'm not a huge fan of most zoos, I've been very impressed by the health, fitness, and conditions I've seen here in Copenhagen. With the weather a bit cooler, the animals were all highly energetic and playful.

Slade at Rhino Bike Works, Plymouth, New Hampshire sold me this 1999 Cannondale T1000 touring model in December 1998 for about $1300 ($2500 in late 2024 dollars). Their store sticker (and original Einstein mini pump) are still going strong.

Another store front...hmmm, it's still here, so I either didn't sell them one, or did another and this is a reject. Some of these might be nice in color, but at the time it never crossed my mind to do that., even though it was drawn on paper that would take the watercolor wash.

The Trojan Mobile Command Center sits parked on display outside APG’s Mallette Training Facility, during a hands-on-access technology showcase for local Harford County Public Schools system students, Aug. 10. The event was hosted by the Army’s C5ISR Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) as part of the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program. The Trojan Mobile Command Center is a self-sustaining, rapid deployment vehicle capable of transporting equipment to be used in for demonstrations, field problems and mission support.
