A small alley leads to some of the homes in the lower part of the village of Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire.

Robin Hood’s Bay is an isolated fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast, five miles south of Whitby and about 10 miles north of Scarborough.

With narrow, winding alleys and clusters of small houses among the cliffs, it still has very much an old feel about it, helped by the absence of cars from the streets of the lower village.

Its remoteness meant it was once a haunt for smugglers, while its name derives from a tale that Robin Hood once fled here to escape the law.

The loco is in the base blue colour of GNER, with the white stripe of National Express East Coast and then the branding of East Coast, a subsidiary of Directly Operated Railways (formed by the DfT) that held the franchise from November 2009 to the Virgin takeover in 2015.

This sidewalk leads past a fast-changing area of steam vents (fumaroles), mudpots, and boiling springs. A rotten-egg smell permeates the air, affirming the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas - a forerunner in the formation of sulfur. A deep within the Earth, a network of pockets of partially molten rock forms the active Lassen magmatic system. Heat generated from the magma warms groundwater to a boil. The water bubbles and steams upward through cracks and appears at Sulphur Works and other hydrothermal areas found within the park.

CSX 8554 leads a train across a residential street in Dolton, Illinois. I spent 26 April 2010 in Dolton with Sam Carlson watching trains. I don't think I've ever seen as many trains in the US as Sam and I did that day between the former C&WI north-south line, now owned by UP and CSX (inherited from the MoPac and L&N purchase of C&EI), and the IHB and B&OCT (CSX) lines. I think this train is on the connecting line from C&WI to B&OCT. www.dhke.com/CRJ/dolton.html has excellent information about Dolton, including a map of the junction.

I went over to a friend's for supper tonight, because both of our husbands were away. As it usually goes, one random thing leads to another, and before we knew it, we were dismantling my car to figure out why the front blinker wouldn't work. Trial and error and parts all over produced the answer: a semi-broken and slightly burnt out bulb with a random pinched wire. We fixed it!

Charlton Abbots is not only worth seeing, it’s worth going to see. If you follow the Corndean Lane from Winchcombe, you travel through some of the most beautiful countryside in England. The narrow lane climbs the steep wooded valley, leaving the town far below. The road reaches the brow of the hill where a small number of parked cars marks the path which leads to Belas Knap. This Neolithic long barrow lies a short distance above but that distance is near vertical, so be prepared for quite a strenuous climb. The path to this ancient monument affords wonderful views over Winchcombe which lies in river valley at the foot of the escarpment.

The Corndean Lane is cut into the valley side and snakes along its steeply wooded slopes with views of Sudeley Castle. At the end of the valley is the hamlet of Charlton Abbots, once owned by the Abbots of Winchcombe Even today, the village is a remote spot, in the medieval period it was chosen as the an ideal site for a walled leper hospital. The present village is a small collection of cottages and farm buildings, with the tiny chapel clinging to the hillside below.

The church is small; just nave, south porch and chancel, with a bellcote which has a bell by John of Gloucester c.1346. The building dates from the 13th century, but had become ruinous by the 18th century, when a major restoration replaced all but the west wall. The round-headed south doorway survives from the earlier church along with the two lancets in the side walls of the chancel, which have trefoil-headed rere-arches with jamb shafts. Two round-headed windows on the south side of the nave are early 19th century but the building underwent a significant restoration in 1887 when the chancel arch and the Minton floor tiles were added. A north vestry was built in 1933 by G.W. Atkinson. The 13th century font was given a 19th century base. Stained glass in the nave is by James Powell & Sons, north 1914, west 1919. The glass in the chancel is by Warrington & Co, 1887; unfortunately the glass in the triple lancet east window is badly damaged.

From the churchyard the Manor House can be seen high above. On this first warm day of summer the view from the church is magnificent. At the head of the valley this secluded graveyard overlooks fields skirted with woods, a few Cotswold cottages cling to the hillside and horses graze on the short upland grass while a swarm of bees noisily attempts to nest in the church roof.

The Sound of Thunder is BEARS club (British European American Racing) motorcycles premier event in New Zealand. Held at Mike Pero Motorsport Park (Ruapuna Racetrack) near Christchurch since the early 80's it is still attracting good entries. This year the event was fortunate to run both days after a change in Covid levels after the first day. These photos are from the Saturday which was well run, stayed on programme but still felt laid back with no serious incidents. Please enjoy the photos.

A trapdoor leads into the basement, where mistress Tara awaits Kerrick already. She sits, almost naked, in a ritual circle. "Do you have the brain?"

"No, the others are paying good attention to it, but I have a plan."

The two make up some convoluted plan regarding a killed refugee girl, and that the brain should already be placed in her grave. Honestly, I didn't pay full attention here (was busy taking pictures ;-) ), but one thing is sure: Kerrick was the one of us, who spent the most time with the refugees, so if the story was about them, he's the one most likely to know something about it.
