UP 6706 leads a Seattle-bound stack train west of Betram, Iowa. In the 2020s, UP 6706 is famously known as the only remaining Chicago & NorthWestern GE AC4400CW to retain most of its original paint scheme on the UP roster. There was some nice symmetry between the EMD photo of nearly 80 years ago and what I found in the canyon during my first visit. Despite the dam and the line change the canyon has lost none of its grandeur. Then as now, I had EMDs pulling tank cars. The SD40-2/GP39-3 combo produced just 100 HP less than the set of FTs. Of course in the geologic time scale, which overshadows everything here, the difference in dates is barely the blink of an eye.

The DRS locos and stock involved were 37038, 37424 (37558) 'Avro Vulcan XH558', 57311 'Thunderbird' and MK2 DBSO 9710.
Happy Avenue leads to West Shore Road. It is a side road of 17B in Bethel. Several photographers shot the huge traffic jam from this point, as the 'happy' name of the Avenue obviously expressed the spirit of Woodstock. Those houses in the backgound were standing back in 1969.
Many Orthodox Jewish bungaloes are located in Bethel as you can see by the modern sign.
AMTK 157 leads the Disney Train east heading to the Midway Amtrak station in Saint Paul where it will sit on display for the festivities taking place in the station's overflow parking area. The train is seen here running past University where it was overtaking a BNSF freight which had departed the yard just moments before I saw the headlights of the Disney train come into view. You sure don't see something like this rolling down the rails everyday. Please forgive me for the harsh light!
UNMISS Civil Affairs Division leads a conflict resolution roundtable discussion at the Gun cattle camp in Marial-bek, with support from the UNMISS Lakes State Coordinator's Office; Relief, Reintegration and Protection Office; Human Rights Division; Public Information Office; and the Nepalese Battalion, who provided force protection.
The group met with the Ruop section of the Agar clan of the Dinka tribe, who have been in conflict with the neighboring Kuei (also part of the Agar clan) since 2007. Since the inciting incident of their conflict, seven peace initiatives have been undertaken by the Ruop and Kuei communities. In line with the traditional justice system, blood compensation (a system which calls for financial reimbursement for those killed, usually paid to relatives of the victims) was paid each time. However, even when peace has been achieved, it has been broken, most often in instances of isolated killings fueled by revenge.
In recent clashes the Kuei have joined with the Pakam (another section of the Agar clan), also in conflict with the Ruop at various times, to fight against the Ruop. The most recent large clash occurred on March 15th near Marial-bek and left over 100 people dead. This was closely followed by a night-time killing within the Gun cattle camp carried out by the Pakam, which the Ruop responded to by ambushing the roads to Pakam.
The UNMISS Civil Affairs Division in Lakes State has been holding meetings with the various groups to hear their grievances and to discuss solutions to the cycle of violence. In this, their third visit to the Gun cattle camp, the primary purpose was to provide feedback from other consultations that have been undertaken with the Kuei and Pakam, as well as the with the government. The Ruop provided the Civil Affairs Divison with their own feedback as well, and suggested discussion items for future meetings.

First lady Michelle Obama leads a reenactment planting of a Cherry Blossom Tree on the 100th Anniversary of The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C.
It was March 27, 1912, when First Lady Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two trees from Japan on the north bank of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park.
For the March 27th 2012 planting First Lady Michelle Obama planted her tree in West Potomac Park, the closest cross streets to this planting location would be Ohio Drive SW at West Basin Drive SW.

MRS. OBAMA: Thank you. Thank you so much, it is a true pleasure to be here on this beautiful, little chilly day. (Laughter.) We planned it. This is the only cold day of the week, and we are here. But I am pleased to be here.
I want to start by thanking Secretary Salazar for that very kind introduction, and for all of his outstanding work as Secretary of the Interior.
I want to thank and recognize Ambassador Fujisaki, as well as Mrs. Fujisaki, who are here today. Thank you all so much, I know you're here somewhere -- oh, you're here. (Laughter.) It's good to see you both. And I want to thank all of you for taking the time to join us for this historic event.
We have come together to celebrate these beautiful cherry blossom trees -- and yes, they were blooming last week. We were so close. (Laughter.) But I think the tree we're planting will -- still has a few blooms, but they are beautiful. And we are here to honor all that they stand for. For so many years, these trees have served as a symbol of the great friendship between the United States and Japan, and as a reminder of our shared hopes, dreams and aspirations.
People from both of our nations worked together for years to bring these trees here to Washington. And over the past century, people of all ages from the U.S. and Japan and so many other nations have come to this Tidal Basin each spring to marvel at their beauty. And year after year, even after the coldest, darkest, stormiest winters, these trees have continued to bloom.
So on this historic anniversary, we don’t just admire the beauty of these trees, we also admire their resilience. And in so doing, we are reminded of the extraordinary resilience of the Japanese people. Over the past year, we have all witnessed their courage, unity and grace as they have come together and begun the very hard work of rebuilding their nation.
And I think that that more than anything else is the lesson that we can learn from these trees. They teach us about all that we can achieve together. And because people from both of our nations came together, this landscape was transformed. And for one hundred years, people from every background and every walk of life have come here to experience, truly, the magic of these trees.
No matter who you are, their beauty stirs our souls. No matter where we’re from, being here among these beautiful blossoms truly lifts our spirits. And that is why we invited all of these wonderful children to join us -- where are the children? There they are. (Applause.) They are here because we want them to learn this lesson as well; we want to pass this lesson onto them. We want to teach them about the great partnership between our nations and what that means for our shared future. We want to teach them to appreciate and learn from the traditions and cultures of others.
And we want them to be inspired by the example of our friends in Japan who have worked so hard and who have been so brave in rebuilding their lives. Because in the end it will be up to them, this next generation, to continue that great friendship. It will be up to them to carry these traditions forward so that one hundred years from now, their children and grandchildren will be able to come here to this very spot and see the tree that we will plant, full grown and in full bloom.
And I hope that on that day, the First Lady –- or the First Gentleman –- of 2112 will also have the privilege of joining with our friends from Japan, and planting another tree which will bloom for yet another one hundred years and beyond.
So with that, I want to once again thank you all for joining us today, and bearing the frigid cold. If you stick around for one more day, it will be 80 tomorrow, I guarantee you. (Laughter.) It's really nice weather here. But we are truly honored to have you here, and it's a pleasure to be able to join in this very special occasion.
And with that, I think it is time for us to plant a tree. (Applause.)

We produced this enchanted evening of music, dance and storytelling at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, on Saturday, November 11th, 2017.
Throughout the evening, we honored community members who took political action this year. The day after the last election, we came together from all walks of life, to resist the attacks against democracy by the Trump regime and right-wing extremists. We marched for democracy, we defended civil rights, we phone banked to flip elections, we protected the environment, we helped reverse Trumpcare, we created political art, and much more.
Kudos to all community members who rose up and stood up for liberty and justice! And thank you to all 60 cast and crew who so generously volunteered their time to host this event! In dark times like these, community action is more important than ever: it’s that choice to act together that defines us -- and gives us hope that we can build a better world. Join your neighbors to keep democracy alive!
