The kitchen, emptied out. There were a couple wall hangings that had been there so long the marks on the wall are visible.
Built under orders by Kitchener to supply the British Army in the war against the Mahdi in the late 19th century, when I visited the area between Wadi Haifa and Station 10 (where the Sudanese railroad branches), the railroad was disused. An employee, proud in his uniform, told me that trains would start again the next day. Given how many of the tracks were still covered by sand, I was not optimistic: however, the railroad did start again (months rather than hours later) in 2013.

This kitchen has been a couple of months in the making. The kitchen unit and fridge are "Gloria" and were bright pink. Just about everything has been re-painted and a bit of re-ment added. I still have a few more things to change, let me know if you think any changes are needed! Need feedback! :)

This is what's now the back end of the kitchen. Many, many years of leaking ceiling destroyed everything back there.
By exposing the original vintage hinges and changing the floor to a more impactful color, the kitchen went from "tidy" to adorable!

The stove is just to the left inside, facing the frig. The floor space is about 3x5 feet. The pantry is outside the kitchen proper, to the left. The corner upper cabinets are pretty much blocked by the stove (left) and frig (right).

After months of research, we decided to paint our oak kitchen cabinets. We installed a new ceiling light, new hardware on kitchen doors and painted the walls.also in the process of installing a new counter top and sink.
Description:
This turn of the century house in San Marino needed a lot of work. In addition to areas (kitchen, bathroom and more) being in disrepair it urgently needed a face lift. We eliminated some (structural) walls and relocated others, creating space for a modern and inviting kitchen. The style of the house, however, was to be preserved. The open beam ceilings and the rich hardwood floors, for example, matched the original craftsman elements. Some very cost-effective yet surprisingly effective upgrades at the exterior were done as well. Some doors/windows were relocated or changed. The old broken flat work was replaced and some painting took care of the rest for the most part. The result is a house true to its heritage, but free of the dated systems and broken elements. More so, the result is a lasting and inviting space for the entire family and their friends to get together and create life long memories!
Tips & Advice:
Original, structural ceiling beams could be emulated with authentic looking plant-on beams. Distressing and properly finishing the wood to match the age-old original is a must. Exteriors could be refreshed for fairly little. Removing a dated window, installing French doors, some minimal hardscape and landscape and tasteful painting should do the trick!

July 14, 2019 - I decided my kitchen needed a facelift. This all started because my dishwasher detergent cup no longer locks it broke in late June. The dishwasher was in the house when I purchased it in 1995. It is probably 30 - 35 years old so it was time to replace it. I was just going to replace the dishwasher however the previous owners put a new tile floor in which blocks the dishwasher from being easily replaced. I was never content with my kitchen the only work I have done to it was to replace the original drop-in oven which didn't work when I bought the house and the matching harvest gold exhaust hood was replaced with a white exhaust hood. I painted the walls yellow in 1996. The oven I bought in 1995 died in March 2018 so the oven is only a year old. I also replaced the kitchen faucet last August. I thought about just maintaining the faucet but decided to upgrade to a faucet with a pullout sprayer.
I engaged KitchenSaver to replace the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, countertop and sink. I want the kitchen to look brand new so hired a contractor to strip nearly 100 years worth of paint off the pantry and basement doors, door frames, window, window frame and sill and repaint the woodwork and walls. The contractor will also be installing wood base since the base was removed by a previous owner. I am also installing a Subway tile white backsplash which will go up to the bottom of the wall cabinets and on either side of the window.
I am a retired architect and it was fun getting back into design. I knew exactly what I wanted and took me no time at all to select everything.
I am going with an Arts and Crafts oak cabinet and drawer fronts. The wood stain is nearly a perfect match to the house woodwork and my furniture. Door and drawer pulls are bronze/copper in the Arts and Crafts style.
I also bought new light fixtures for the kitchen and dining room both with a bronze finish. KitchenSaver will be installing five dimmable LED lights below the cabinets and above the sink.
I decided to add a recycling/trash cabinet and pantry cabinet to fill in the dead space between the refrigerator and wall this necessitated the removal of the existing quad outlet that the refrigerator is plugged into. (no outlet behind the refrigerator) In order to do any electrical work in my house I had to bring the existing electrical circuit breaker panel up to current codes. Which meant I needed to replace the existing electrical circuit breaker panel. I had a duplex outlet added behind the refrigerator. With the new circuit breaker panel I now can use the microwave oven and toaster oven at the same time. What a concept! I also replaced the old fashion knob and tube light switch which controls the basement light. The old switch scared me and wasn't safe.
New window treatments for the backdoor and window. I wasn't able to find a blind which matches the Sherwin Williams Indian White SW 1035 paint color so I am going with a Levelor Cordless Cellular blind that is an exact match to the Sherwin Williams Koi Pond SW 7727 wall color.
One last improvement the contractor got paint stripper on the existing oven exhaust hood so I replaced the hood with a new black hood which matches the oven.
this is the wall to the stage-right of the door (with the shelving), and the wall to the stage-left of the window (with the recycling waiting to be taken out). since this photo was taken, i've added a recycling can, so no more boxes and bottles piled on the floor. it's hard to tell from the picture, but if you look closely you can see that the cutting boards which had been tilted against the backsplash are now stored neatly on the shelves, which is a much better place for them. all and all i'm pretty happy with that shelving unit. everything is organized in a way that is both efficient and not terrible to look at. above the shelves is a lovely tintype of, like, some quasi-naked victorian chick or something on the wall above the shelves (because of the angle, you can't see it in the before picture). recently reinstalled, though no photo yet.
