The Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), sometimes referred to as Western Yellow-legged Gull (to distinguish it from eastern populations of yellow-legged large white-headed gulls), is a large gull of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, which has only recently achieved wide recognition as a distinct species. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of either the Caspian Gull L. cachinnans, or more broadly as a subspecies of the Herring Gull L. argentatus. It is named after the German zoologist Karl Michahelles.
It is now generally accepted that the Yellow-legged Gull is a full species. The breeding range is centred around the Mediterranean Sea. In North Africa it is common in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia and increasing in places. Recent breeding has occurred in Libya and Egypt. In the Middle East a few breed in Israel and Syria with larger numbers in Cyprus and Turkey. In Europe there are colonies all along the Mediterranean coast, and also on the Atlantic islands and coasts north to Brittany and west to the Azores. It also breeds on the west side of the Black Sea; here it overlaps with the Caspian Gull but there is a difference in habitat, with the Yellow-legged Gull preferring sea cliffs and Caspian Gull on flatter shores. In recent decades birds have spread north into central and western Europe. One to four pairs have attempted to breed in southern England since 1995 (sometimes hybrid pairs with Lesser Black-backed Gulls), though colonisation has been very slow.
Many birds remain in the same area all year round but others migrate to spend the winter in mild areas of western Europe or head south as far as Senegal, the Gambia and the Red Sea. (wikipedia)
The species is quite common along the Portuguese coast. There was a big evening roost of YLGs on the local beach near where we were staying this summer. A handful of Audouin's Gulls were also in amongst them.
Most of the shoot was indoors due to the heavy showers but every now and then the sun would pop out; Yvonne would then rush around getting the girls clothes for outdoors and I would quickly give directions/instructions and shoot off a few pictures. Then it would be back indoors when the rain returned and Yvonne would look out the next outfit for the girls. Tiring but a laugh.

Drove out to the river last night to try and re-do this shot with my new gear, but the dock was crowded (it was damn hot yesterday!) so I didn't bother. Ended up driving around the farmland in Sutter County until this old couch caught my eye.
I got out my tripod and set it up before realizing I didn't have the plate that attaches to the camera, ugh! I had left it on my S5, which I was using to record some video of me drumming.
And of course, once the sun went down the sky started doing all sorts of crazy things, which I couldn't capture because I didn't have a working tripod!!

Persepolis (Old Persian: Pārsa, Modern Persian: تخت جمشید/پارسه, Takht-e Jamshid or Chehel Minar[1], UniPers: Taxte Jamšid) was the ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire during the Achaemenid dynasty. Persepolis is situated 70 km northeast of the modern city of Shiraz in the Fars Province of modern Iran. In contemporary Persian, the site is known as Takht-e Jamshid (Throne of Jamshid) and Parseh. The earliest remains of Persepolis date from around 515 BC. To the ancient Persians, the city was known as Pārsa, which means "The City of Persians". Persepolis is the Greek interpretation of the name Πέρσης πόλις (Persēs polis: "Persian city").
The UNESCO declared the citadel of Persepolis a World Heritage Site in 1979. Persepolis is also one of the 80 treasures featured on Around the World in 80 Treasures presented by Dan Cruickshank...more

Euromaidan (Ukrainian: ??????????, Yevromaidan, literally "Eurosquare") is a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine, which began on the night of 21 November 2013 with public protests demanding closer European integration and culminated in a coup d'etat of the reigning Ukrainian government. The scope of the protests expanded, with many calls for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych and his government. Many protesters joined because of the violent dispersal of protesters on 30 November and "a will to change life in Ukraine". By 25 January 2014, the protests had been fueled by the perception of "widespread government corruption", "abuse of power", and "violation of human rights in Ukraine".
The demonstrations began on the night of 21 November 2013, when protests erupted in the capital, Kiev, after the Ukrainian government suspended preparations for signing an Association Agreement and a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, in order to seek closer economic relations with Russia. Prime Minister Mykola Azarov had asked for 20 Billion Euros (US$27) billion in loans and aid. The EU and Russia both offered Ukraine the possibility of substantial loans. Russia also offered Ukraine cheaper gas prices. On 24 November 2013, first clashes between protesters and police began. Protesters strived to break cordon. Police used tear gas and batons, protesters also used tear gas and some fire crackers (according to the police, protesters were the first to use them). After a few days of demonstrations an increasing number of university students joined the protests. The Euromaidan has been repeatedly characterised as an event of major political symbolism for the European Union itself, particularly as
"the largest ever pro-European rally in history".
The protests are ongoing despite heavy police presence, regularly sub-freezing temperatures, and snow. Escalating violence from government forces in the early morning of 30 November caused the level of protests to rise, with 400,000–800,000 protesters demonstrating in Kiev on the weekends of 1 December and 8 December. In the weeks since, protest attendance has fluctuated from 50,000 to 200,000 during organised rallies. Violent riots took place 1 December and 19 January through 25 in response to police brutality and government repression. Since 23 January several Western Ukrainian Oblast (province) Governor buildings and regional councils have been occupied in a revolt by Euromaidan activists. In the Russophone cities of Zaporizhzhya, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk, protesters also tried to take over their local government building, and have been met with considerable force from both police and government supporters.
According to journalist Lecia Bushak writing in the 18 February 2014 issue of Newsweek magazine, EuroMaidan has grown into something far bigger than just an angry response to the fallen-through EU deal. It's now about ousting Yanukovych and his corrupt government; guiding Ukraine away from its 200-year-long, deeply intertwined and painful relationship with Russia; and standing up for basic human rights to protest, speak and think freely and to act peacefully without the threat of punishment.
A turning point came in late-February, when enough members of the president's party fled or defected to lose their majority in the parliament leaving the opposition large enough to form the necessary quorum. This allowed parliament to pass a series of laws that removed police from Kiev, canceled anti-protest operations, restored the 2004 constitution, freed political detainees, and allegedly impeached the president. Yanukovych then fled to Ukraine's second largest city of Kharkiv, refusing to recognise the parliament's decisions. The parliament has assigned early elections for May 2014.

Gotta watch out for them grapes; turn your back for one second and suddenly there's a swarm of the buggers around you :(
Today my girlfriend and I did our favourite habit: going to Melbourne Central train station and picking a random train to catch and seeing where we end up. We thought the Belgrave train line sounded cool so we jumped on it and travelled for a bit, and then jumped off at a nice-looking suburb called Box Hill.
We visited a park with a pond shaped like a fish and saw a tiny little (2yo) kid walking a big dog (well, being yanked along by this dog). We found a second little park and Rani crocheted for a bit while I took weird little photos like the one you see here, while people looked at me funny. We ate lunch in a Japanese restaurant that sold "rice burgers" - Tori Karage with lettuce and sauce in a bun made of rice, wrapped in seaweed. I don't like seaweed but the rest of it was heaven in my mouth.
I clocked up 18,000 steps today.

Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first United States national monument, established on September 24, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).

Many People, Many Stories, One Place
The Tower is an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. It is considered sacred by Northern Plains Indians and indigenous people. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to learn more, explore more and define our place in the natural and cultural world.

Devils Tower National Monument, a unique and striking geologic wonder steeped in Native American legend, is a modern-day national park and climbers' challenge. Devils Tower sits across the state line in northeast Wyoming. The Tower is a solitary, stump-shaped granite formation that looms 1,267 feet above the tree-lined Belle Fourche River Valley, like a skyscraper in the country. Once hidden below the earth’s surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing the Tower.
The two-square-mile park surrounding the tower was proclaimed the nation’s first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. The park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. While visiting the park you are bound to see deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife. The mountain’s markings are the basis for Native American legend. One legend has it that a giant bear clawed the grooves into the mountainside while chasing several young Indian maidens. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians. Devils Tower is also remembered as the movie location for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
The stone pillar is about 1,000 feet in diameter at the bottom and 275 feet at the top and that makes it the premier rock climbing challenge in the Black Hills. Hikers enjoy the Monument’s trails. The 1.25-mile Tower Trail encircles the base. This self-guided hike offers close-up views of the forest and wildlife, not to mention spectacular views of the Tower itself. The Red Beds Trail covers a much wider three-mile loop around the tower.

While America’s first national monument garnered significant attention as the backdrop to the 1977 Stephen Spielberg movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the tower is sacred to Northern Plains Indian tribes and the Black Hills region Kiowa Tribe. With oral storytelling and a history that dates back thousands of years, today, American Indian tribes continue to hold sacred ceremonies at the tower, including sweat lodges and sun dances. There is more to this monument than its rich history. You can stop at the visitor’s center to learn about one of the ranger-led programs, night sky viewing, hiking and even climbing to the top of Devils Tower. If one day isn’t enough to explore this unforgettable area, bring your camping gear to stay within the monument, or stay just outside or in accommodations at one of the nearby towns.

This is lamp art. I used acrylic paint and gold leaf to create a large heart on canvas supported by numerous minor hearts then I fixed fairy lights to the back of the canvas and plugged it in to bring this piece to life as it is hardly noticeable during the day but as the sun goes down the rhythmic flickering of the fairy lights accentuates the yellow and gold hearts pleasantly setting a calming mood to any room.

Hi all!
Usually during these December weeks, I try to find a Xmas tree so that I can take some photos/videos in one my season appropriate dresses. 🎄
But these last few weeks of school have been a bit more hectic.. and I'm visiting my family tomorrow, so yeah: that Xmas dress + tree photo will have to wait. 😛
So, here's a photo of me in my red leather skirt with red heels. Still festive enough for the seasons, right? 😉
I hope everyone has a lovely time with their loved ones during these holidays! ❤️

A text, in english, from IBISRING www.ibisring.com/index.php?view=article&id=3
Buff-necked ibis (Theristicus caudatus).
74 cm. Looking like a heron, it is a brightly colored bird with a long and bent beak. The head and neck are ochre; the front, crown and nape are chestnut brown. Bare parts around the eye, black collar and throat. The stomach is black or off-white and the wings are grey with primary and secondary blacks. Black beak with point, red horn and feet.
About 10 years ago we saw in zoo's some buff colored ibises. Usually a single bird in a mixed collection. Only a few had a pair of them. As there were few breeding results, no one had a bird to sell. Everybody was waiting to get an extra bird.
We noticed the differences in names on the cages. Although everybody had the same birds the Latin and common names were not the same. As ibisring did not exist than, we could not ask them. There was no other alternative than to look up things ourselves. We found that there were two almost look-alike species, both from South America Some older books did not even recognize the two as a separate species, but the new works who base themselves on DNA show the difference. It showed that all the birds in Europe we had seen and photographed were blackfaced ibises, Theresticus melanopis. Some had them under a wrong name. Later we found out that South American export firms always send the birds as Caudatus. Some zoo's followed the import papers; others did their homework and found the right name.
We could not get birds here, so we decided to import some, witch was easy to do in those days. As all birds here were melanopis we decided to get the real caudatus. A South American firm had them and soon the birds arrived. They were melanopis, just like all the others that ever arrived. The export firm did not even know the difference. We found than that the birds did not occur in the same parts of the continent. Theristicus Caudatus are the birds that live in the center and east side of the continent. Theristicus Melanopis lives on the west side, down to the south point. It was not easy to get a dealer interested in sending us the birds we wanted. They did not believe someone was interested in a bird that was so common to them. Or they did not know how to get them, or were afraid of the paperwork and expedition. After a long search someone send us pictures of available birds. He kept them four years for us but could not get an export license for Europe. Finally he sold them somewhere else. Eight years later they finally arrived. We asked several import firms for the birds and one of them succeeded. Now they found the way and there is some demand, several imports have been made.
In the long run the first pair, the melanopis we had, was a blessing in disguise. They are unrelated to the European population and their offspring is very useful for building a stronger population.
Now that we have both species in captivity, it is much easier to detail them. The birds are at ease and very close, so we were able to make following photos. They almost speak for themselves, but we will add some comments.
The species Theristicus Caudatus (buffnecked) and Theristicus melanopis (blackfaced) are easily recognizable on following points:
BREAST:
Blackfaced ibis:
Breast buff colored with a grey stripe on the shoulders, making a V mark on the breast
Black belly.
Buffnecked ibis:
Breast black up to the shoulders, neck buff.
Belly black.
WING:
Blackfaced ibis:
Wing silver grey
Buffnecked ibis:
Grey wing has a white edge.
HEAD:
Blackfaced ibis:
Birds have a lobe under their chin, different in size along the season.
Buffnecked ibis:
No lobes
SEX:
Blackfaced ibis:
Hardly any difference between male and female.
Buffnecked ibis:
Clear difference between male and female, size and length of the beak.
We would like to ask everybody not to mix these species, do not even keep them in the same aviary. Their have been mistakes in the past, you never can make them right again. This article leaves no doubt about what is what. All birds are kept separated so far, let's keep it this way please.

Comprimento: 69 cm.

Moths of Borneo: Gunung Trusmadi
The Borneo Jungle Girl Camp or Trus Madi Entomology Camp sits deep in the lush forests of Gunung Trusmadi, Sabah — the northern-most state of Malaysian Borneo. It is a Class 1 Fully Protected Forestry Reserve on Mount Trusmadi, the second highest mountain in Malaysia, standing at 2642 meters (8668 feet) tall.
At Borneo Jungle Girl Camp, I stayed for 4 nights with a group of friends and returned with almost 7000 photos, recording almost 600 species of moths and lots of other insects and arachnids. Photos from other taxonomic groups will be uploaded to my Flickr collections and split into taxonomic groups.

Taken 11-01-08 across the weir of the flooded River Lee in Cork City, Ireland (stood outside the back of the Kingsley Hotel). I was told they'd had to open the dam up river as there has been so much rain - the Lee fields are quite flooded as of right now.
Atkins Hall as its now known is a Gothic style landmark building built c.1852 and is the longest building in Ireland (it was originally designed as three separate buildings but these were later joined together).
It used to be called Eglinton Lunatic Asylum (the second asylum built in Ireland) and is rumoured to be quite thoroughly haunted by its previous inhabitants :-)
spudmurphy has another great view of this here.
