Tumblebooks:
I've been awake a few too many hours right now. This is because I got
up early to attend a webinar from the State Department about the uses
of e-books in American public libraries, especially those in New York
City. Christopher Platt was the presenter. Yes, he is from New York,
which is in the same timezone as mine, but the presentation was so
early because he was presenting from Rome, where it was afternoon.
NYPL may be the largest library providing general interest e-books to
their patrons as items that can be checked out. It was very
interesting. The NYPL e-book site uses Overdrive as a backend, as do
many other libraries. This is a new technology, a new type of service,
and there is still a lot of room for growth, especially with how to
find the books.

But enough of that. More about the presentation will go into my
ETechLib blog. Here, I wanted to talk about Tumblebooks, which was my
favorite of the morning. I've been collecting kiddylit since before I
had children. My kids had to get permission to borrow my kids books.
Later I started what I believe to have been the first website for
preschool children, the Mother
Goose Pages which I began in 1995. At that time, several people
made fun of me, saying it was a dumb idea since everyone knows
preschool kids can't read and don't use computers. Well, everyone knew
it then. Not so true now, eh? What I found was that the site was used
by parents of young children, especially those stationed in other
countries, teachers of English as a Second Language, pastors
researching sermons, grandparents, people researching either the
rhymes or the history or cultural context, musicians, and many others.
This doesn't surprise anyone now, I'm sure. When my son was small we
acquired an astonishing variety of interactive books on CD-ROM, with
great artwork, charming music, vibrant narrations, engaging humorous
surprises built-in, animations, jokes, "easter eggs", intellectual
puzzles and challenges, etc. I've been rather sad that while the
CD-ROMS were well preserved, most of them no longer work on today's
computers.
TumblelBooks to the rescue! "TumbleBooks are created by adding
animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in
order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or
have read to you." They have a nice
selection, books in multiple languages (English, Spanish, French),
picture books and chapter books. They also offer games and teaching
resources. They have reasonable pricing for libraries and schools, but
no option for personal subscriptions.
Now, to be fair, since I usually highlight free resources, I feel
compelled to share some free ebook resources for children.

CAMP HUMPHREYS - The 2012 Spring Fest featured fun and entertainment for the whole family at Independence Park on May 12.
Spring Fest is a Korean-American festival which allows Humphreys to welcome its host country citizens, and share with them U.S. food and culture. It also serves as a chance to enjoy the warmer weather.
“The event is in celebration of the spring season,” said Spc. Kareen Medeiros, Area III coordinator for Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers. “It allows everyone to come out and enjoy spring.”
Don Claycomb, director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation on Humphreys, called Spring Fest MWR’s biggest event of the year.
“It’s where MWR brings it all,” he said. “We try to have something for everyone.”
And they did. There were activities for all age groups from noon to 10 p.m. This included live bands, children’s play areas and eating contests.
According to Claycomb, the key to the day was planning.
“I really want to compliment our Special Events Coordinator, Paul Parrish, and the rest of our Recreation Division, for the job they did in making Spring Fest successful,” he said. “The tents, booths, stage and everything else don’t appear by magic. It takes weeks of work, especially on the part of Paul, to pull this together and make it happen. Camp Humphreys is fortunate to have a person like Paul with the vision, organizational ability and drive to make it successful.”
The result was a fun event for the attendees.
“We love this day,” said Sgt. 1st Class Chris Fisher. “It’s a great day for the Korean Community and the Humphreys community to come together and enjoy festivities and good food.”
The food especially impressed attendee Patricia Branch. “Spring Fest is not complete without funnel cakes,” she said. “Once we get our funnel cakes, we’re good.”
There were more than 30 booths featuring face painting, jewelry making, and traditional Korean culture. Some of the booths served as fundraisers for unit Family Readiness Groups, with ribs, caramel apples, cookies and chicken on a stick being sold.
“My daughter had a blast,” said Maj. Alfred Muna. “It’s very exciting. The Spring Fest gets better every year.”
“It was excellent,” added Capt. David Sulkowski. “Everything went very smoothly.” His wife, Capt. Kathy Sulkowski, said, “We really appreciate all the volunteers here from the community.”
McKenna Olson, age 8, may have summed up the event best when she said, “I’m happy because we are having lots of fun.”
Week 1 beginning June 23, 2014 and ending June 27, 2014 was the start to Willow Grove Day Camp's 60th season. During the first week of camp campers reunited with friends, enjoyed "Puppet Pizzazz" and started clubs. Campers engaged in activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, baseball, soccer, skating, and so much more!
We look forward to another great camp season.

The Honorable William Wall is the floating clubhouse of Manhattan Yacht Club. It is a 90 ft steel barge with an open-air upper deck. This Clubhouse is anchored in New York harbor just north of Ellis Island. This is the best view in the harbor for watching the sailboat races.
Manhattan Yacht Club opened the upper deck its clubhouse to the public beginning in 2012 (the downstairs Champagne Bar is still private to Members only).
Manhattan Sailing Club was established in 1987. The club re-introduced recreational sailing to the harbor after an absence of more than 60 years.
The club started at South Street Seaport with 12 J/24s on floating docks between the tall ships “Peking” and “Wavertree.”
During its first years of existence, the club experienced an economic roller-coaster. The inaugural year of 1987 brought a large growth in membership only to see the stock market crash in October, taking with it many individual and corporate members. The club rebounded and created and hosted the first International Yacht Club Challenge in 1988. By 1989, the club was again growing strong with the second International Yacht Club Challenge being co-hosted by Yacht Club de Monaco and sponsored by the World Link Club of Osaka, Japan.
But 1989 and 1990 were times of corporate restructuring followed by a recession. By 1991, the club stood at a low of 115 members. But these were committed members who worked to create a better organization, improve the fleet and continue the club programs.
In 1993, the club started expanding by establishing the Manhattan Sailing School in order to offer sailing instruction to new sailors. Until this point, the club had been primarily a racing organization. In 1994, the club moved from the Seaport to North Cove Yacht Harbor. North Cove offered the club a higher quality facility. Then membership began growing. From 115 in 1994, the club grew in the following years to 150, 200, 270 and in 1998, to 320.
In 1997, the club established its first clubhouse, a floating pontoon boat at North Cove called “Mermaid.” In 1999, the club organized a series of International Races on the Sandbaggers, Bull & Bear.
In 2001, the club was substantially impacted by the tragic events of 9/11. During this time, club members rallied and subscribed to clubhouse bonds to lay the keel for our first significant clubhouse, the Honorable William Wall. The years of 2002-2003 were rebuilding in lower Manhattan and at the sailing club. In 2004, our clubhouse in the harbor opened for business.
In 2005, Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh and our Patron Dennis Conner won the management of North Cove marina which was then renamed “Dennis Conner’s North Cove.” In 2006, the club docks were replaced with wider docks which conformed to the graceful curve at North Cove. The number of club boats at North Cove was increased to 24. In 2006, the club acquired “Admiral’s Launch,” improving transportation to and from the harbor clubhouse.
For the club’s 20th anniversary in 2007, a group of visionary members got together to form a 12 Metre Syndicate and purchased “America II” as the new flagship of the club.
By 2009, club membership had grown to 800. Then the financial crisis impacted the club as well as all Lower Manhattan organizations. Membership dropped to 650. Starting in 2010, membership rebounded to 740 and in 2011, grew to 820.
2012 was the club’s Silver Jubilee season. Membership set a new record at 900 people and the club ended the season with the acquisition of “Arabella” which will serve as a new clubhouse at North Cove.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply the Tower of Pisa (Torre di Pisa [ˈtorre di ˈpiːza]) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt. The tower is situated behind the Pisa Cathedral and is the third oldest structure in the city's Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo), after the cathedral and the Pisa Baptistry.
The tower's tilt began during construction in the 12th century, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight. The tilt increased in the decades before the structure was completed in the 14th century. It gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The height of the tower is 55.86 metres (183.27 feet) from the ground on the low side and 56.67 metres (185.93 feet) on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m (8 ft 0.06 in). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). The tower has 296 or 294 steps; the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase. Prior to restoration work performed between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees, but the tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. This means the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 metres (12 ft 10 in) from the centre.
There has been controversy about the real identity of the architect of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For many years, the design was attributed to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano, a well-known 12th-century resident artist of Pisa, famous for his bronze casting, particularly in the Pisa Duomo. Pisano left Pisa in 1185 for Monreale, Sicily, only to come back and die in his home town. A piece of cast bearing his name was discovered at the foot of the tower in 1820, but this may be related to the bronze door in the façade of the cathedral that was destroyed in 1595. A 2001 study seems to indicate Diotisalvi was the original architect, due to the time of construction and affinity with other Diotisalvi works, notably the bell tower of San Nicola and the Baptistery, both in Pisa.
Construction of the tower occurred in three stages over 199 years. Work on the ground floor of the white marble campanile began on August 14, 1173 during a period of military success and prosperity. This ground floor is a blind arcade articulated by engaged columns with classical Corinthian capitals.
The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-metre foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil, a design that was flawed from the beginning. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, because the Republic of Pisa was almost continually engaged in battles with Genoa, Lucca, and Florence. This allowed time for the underlying soil to settle. Otherwise, the tower would almost certainly have toppled. In 1198, clocks were temporarily installed on the third floor of the unfinished construction.
In 1272, construction resumed under Giovanni di Simone, architect of the Camposanto. In an effort to compensate for the tilt, the engineers built upper floors with one side taller than the other. Because of this, the tower is curved. Construction was halted again in 1284 when the Pisans were defeated by the Genoans in the Battle of Meloria.
The seventh floor was completed in 1319. The bell-chamber was finally added in 1372. It was built by Tommaso di Andrea Pisano, who succeeded in harmonizing the Gothic elements of the bell-chamber with the Romanesque style of the tower. There are seven bells, one for each note of the musical major scale. The largest one was installed in 1655.
After a phase (1990–2001) of structural strengthening, the tower is currently undergoing gradual surface restoration, in order to repair visible damage, mostly corrosion and blackening. These are particularly pronounced due to the tower's age and its exposure to wind and rain.

Pisa Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Pisa) is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Italy. It is a notable example of Romanesque architecture, in particular the style known as Pisan Romanesque. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Pisa.
Construction on the cathedral began in 1063 (1064 according to the Pisan calendar of the time) by the architect Buscheto, and expenses were paid using the spoils received fighting against the Muslims in Sicily in 1063. It includes various stylistic elements: classical, Lombard-Emilian, Byzantine, and Islamic, drawing upon the international presence of Pisan merchants at that time. In the same year, St. Mark's Basilica began its reconstruction in Venice, evidence of a strong rivalry between the two maritime republics to see which could create the most beautiful and luxurious place of worship.
The church was erected outside Pisa's high middle age-era walls, to show that Pisa that was so powerful, it had no fear of being attacked. The chosen area had already been used in the Lombard era as a necropolis and at the beginning of the 11th century a church had been erected here, but never finished, that was to be named Santa Maria. Buscheto's grand new church, was initially called Santa Maria Maggiore until it was officially named Santa Maria Assunta.
In 1092 the cathedral was declared a primatial church, archbishop Dagobert having been given the title of Primate by Pope Urban II. The cathedral was consecrated in 1118 by Pope Gelasius II, who belonged to the Caetani family which was powerful both in Pisa and in Rome.
In the early 12th century the cathedral was enlarged under the direction of architect Rainaldo, who increased the length of the nave by adding three bays consistent with the original style of Buscheto, enlarged the transept, and planned a new facade which was completed by workers under the direction of the sculptors Guglielmo and Biduino. The exact date of the work is unclear: according to some, the work was done right after the death of Buscheto about the year 1100, though others say it was done closer to 1140. In any case, work was finished in 1180, as documented by the date written on the bronze knockers made by Bonanno Pisano found on the main door.
The structure's present appearance is the result of numerous restoration campaigns that were carried out in different eras. The first radical interventions occurred after the fire of 1595, following which the roof was replaced and sculptors from the workshop of Giambologna, among whom were Gasparo Mola and Pietro Tacca, created the three bronze doors of the facade. In the early 18th century began the redecoration of the inside walls of the cathedral with large paintings, the "quadroni", depicting stories of the blesseds and saints of Pisa. These works were made by the principal artists of the era, and a group of citizens arranged for the special financing of the project. Successive interventions occurred in the 19th century and included both internal and external modifications; among the latter was the removal of the original facade statues (presently in the cathedral museum) and their replacement with copies.
Other notable interventions include: the dismantling of Giovanni Pisano's pulpit between 1599 and 1601 that only in 1926 was reassembled and returned to the cathedral (with some original pieces missing, including the staircase); and the dismantling of the monument to Henry VII made by Lupo di Francesco that was found in front of the door of San Ranieri and later substituted by a simpler, symbolic version.

Tina Maze – Superstar. Anfang Mai wird die Slowenin 30 Jahre alt und tut dies nach einer Saison, in der es Rekorde hagelte. Geboren wurde Maze in einer Kleinstadt nahe der österreichischen Grenze. Im Januar 1999 gab sie ihr Debüt im Weltcup und arbeitete sich im besten Sinne des Wortes nach oben. Keiner ist fleißiger als Maze. Skistars werden im Sommer gemacht – nach diesem Motto verfährt die Slowenin. Sie gewann den Gesamtweltcup, den Weltcup in der Kombination, im Riesenslalom und im Super G. Zweite Plätze gab es in den Abfahrts- und Slalomwertungen. All das in einem Winter wohlgemerkt. Elf Einzelsiege im Weltcup, den Punkterekord von Hermann Meier geschlagen, Triumphe in fünf Disziplinen – eine Saison für die Geschichtsbücher.
Sie ist auch die einzige, die in dieser Saison alle 35 Rennen bestritt.
Neben den Rekorden wie 24 Podestplätzen oder 2414 Punkten, mit denen sie Hermann Maiers Bestmarken (22 Podeste/2000 Punkte) auslöschtes, wartete die Skifirma Stöckli an der Siegerparty auf der Lenzerheide in Anwesenheit des slownischen Ministerpräsidenten Janez Jansa mit interessanten Zahlen auf. So produzierte Stöckli 1700 Paar Rennski, allein 220 für Tina Maze. Dafür brauchte sie 4,7 Tonnen (Schweizer) Holz, 3314 Meter Beläge in 14 verschiedenen Varianten, um die optimalen Gleiteigenschaften herauszufiltern. Das Testteam absolvierte 5400 Fahrten über 2808 Kilometer, brauchte 325 Kilo Wachs und erhob 48'600 Zeitdaten.

RAMSTEIN-MIESENBACH, Germany – Reduced oxygen simulates higher elevations helps Staff Sgt. Spencer Anderson train for the cycling in Colorado at the 2012 Wounded Warrior Games.
Anderson, an Army medic, is among 30 Soldiers and 20 veterans representing the Army at the third annual Warrior Games, a weeklong event that began April 30 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Events includes cycling, archery, wheelchair basketball, shooting, swimming, track and field and sitting volleyball.
Anderson started cycling 16 months ago. Now, it’s part of a routine, something productive that’s now motivated him to compete.
“Cycling has been a phenomenal tool for me,” Anderson said. “It probably saved my life.”
Shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Wisconsin native left Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky., joined the Army and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. In 2007, while deployed to Tikrit, Iraq, with the 1st Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, a roadside bomb exploded a few feet from Anderson’s Humvee. The combat medic remembers a flash of light before losing consciousness.
He finished his 15-month tour, filled with intense and seemingly endless days, in Oct. 2007. Three years ago, he married his wife, Lorena, who’s been his biggest supporter, he said. After serving at Fort Gordon, Ga., Anderson arrived at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern – where he now serves at the Warrior Transition Unit at Kleber Kaserne.
Cycling, Anderson found, is a great outlet for someone recovering from post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury – where bouts of anger come easily and often, Anderson said.
“When I’m angry, when I’m agitated, I can go out and just pound the pedals as hard as I want until I’m tired,” Anderson said. “Then come home and I feel better.”
Last year in Landstuhl, Anderson met hero Lance Armtstrong, who gave him Anderson bracelet he wears when riding. He’s since cycled in veteran’s events in Florida and Normandy, France – where a five-day tour through WWII battle sites ended with a leg of the Tour De France. In March, Anderson cycled during clinics at Fort Meade, Md. and qualified for the Warrior Games.
He’s overcome more recent obstacles. In March, while driving to work, traffic built up on the A-6 autobahn in Kaiserslautern. A large truck slammed into Anderson’s car, pushing him several hundred feet.
“His bumper is in my door and he’s pushing. There’s nothing I could do,” Anderson said. “I said, ‘God, can you help me, because I’m scared.’”
Anderson’s car hit the guard rail. The driver told him he didn’t know he’d struck a car and kept on the gas. Since then, training has been a little painful. But Anderson’s confident he’ll be ready for the upcoming competition.
In the Kaiserslautern Military Community, the American Red Cross is known for emergency messages, safety courses and volunteering. The organization’s outreach efforts, which includes a partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project, expands its programs and helps service members, said Kathleen Butler, senior station manager at Ramstein Air Base.
“Through this partnership, we’ve been able to bring a new resource into the community in supporting joint services,” Butler said.
Together, they support Anderson’s training, sponsoring his Alpine sessions and bike repairs. The gym’s owner has also been a supporter, Anderson said, extending scheduled training time and connecting Anderson with an experienced cyclist for advice.
Wounded troops evolve and get better through physical activity, said Carol Porter, Wounded Warrior Project’s manager of alumni, who has seen troops “get that edge back.”
“They’ve gone from having so much pain to realizing with a lot of training and help, they are able to get back to an active lifestyle,” Porter said. “They don’t give up.”

Washington Memorial Chapel, located on private property along Route 23 within Valley Forge National Historic Park, serves as both an active Episcopal Parish as well as a tribute to General George Washington. Designed by Milton B. Medary, and resulting from a sermon preached by founder, the Rev. Dr. W. Herbert Burk, the Chapel was completed in 1917--fourteen years after the cornerstone was laid on the 125th anniversary of the evacuation of the continental army from the area.
Patriot's Tower was completed in 1953 and contains the Washington Memorial National Carillon. The 102-foot tower was financed with the assistance of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and contains fifty-eight bells including the national birthday bell, and a bell for each of the fifty states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, Midway and Wake Islands. The size of each bell was determined by the population of the states, territories and the District of Columbia.
Valley Forge National Historical Park, encompassing 3,466-acres eighteen miles northwest of Philadelphia, preserves and reinterprets the site where the the main body of the Continental Army--between 10,000 and 12,000 troops--was encamped during from December 19, 1778 to June 19, 1778, the American Revolutionary War.
After the Battle of White Marsh (or Edge Hill), Washington chose Valley Forge as an encampment because it was between the Continental Congress in York, Supply Depots in Reading, and British forces in Philadelphia. Undernourished and poorly clothed through the harsh winter, Washington's troops were ravaged by disease, suffering as many as two thousand losses, with thousands more listed as unfit for futy. Despite the conditions, the winter at Valley Forge proved invaluable for the young army, which underwent its first uniform training regimen, under the guidance of Prussian drill master, Baron Friedrich von Steuben.
Valley Forge, named for the iron forge built along Valley Creek in the 1740's, was established as the first state park of Pennsylvania in 1893 by the Valley Forge Park Commission. In 1923, the VFPC was brought under the Department of Forests and Waters and later incorporated into the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1971. In 1976, Pennsylvania gave the park as a gift to the nation for the the Bicentennial. The National Park System established the area as Valley Forge National Historical Park on July 4, 1976.
