Beti Utsav is a community celebration which takes place every three months in several areas in New Delhi. It is a festive gathering of community members who come together to celebrate the birth of girls in their neighbourhood.
In India boys are valued far higher than girls, so much so that many women face pressure to have an illegal sex determination test, and if they are having a girl, also face pressure to abort the foetus. The latest census showed that there were only 914 girls to every 1,000 boys across India.
On a Beti Utsav celebration, ActionAid’s partner Action India, goes into the community to sing songs, give out sweets and visit the homes of families of girls who are less than three months old. Ladoos (an Indian sweet) are usually distributed when a boy is born in the family, so these are given out on Beti Utsav celebrations too, and tin plates (thali) are drummed to make noise.

This building is across from Roosevelt Park near the Michigan Central Station in Detroit, Michigan. It's a sad but all too common sight around the city.
Abandoned properties are everywhere in and around the city of Detroit. Roosevelt Park is no exception to this. Luckily, the Roosevelt Hotel and surrounding park area are the subject of a revival effort from Phillip Cooley (owner of Slow's BBQ, mmmmmm) and members of the Roosevelt Park Revival project.
Roosevelt Park is an important part of the original "Corktown" in Detroit, Michigan. Many Irish immigrant families used this area to spend time with their friends and familes or tailgate before Detroit Tiger Games. Who knows what the future will hold for this area? Some ideas include a skateboard park and improved housing for the area.
Hopefully the revival sparks some additional people to continue improving Corktown and the surrounding areas.

The Hanging Temple of China is one of the world’s most impossible examples of architecture. Clinging to the cliffs of Mount Heng in Shanxi Province, the historic buildings combine wooden structures, narrow walkways, staircases, and bridges with the natural rock face, creating a gravity-defying marvel.
When I first saw pictures of this temple I knew I had to recreate it with LEGO. I designed my model with an emphasis on detail and realism, really trying to convey the distinctive character of the original structure. The build features numerous interconnected buildings, realistic staircases and bridges winding between the different levels, detailed wooden supports, and the complex arrangement of platforms that gives the Hanging Temple its unique appearance. The temple is actually constructed over a strong Technic frame, giving the appearance of fragile suspension while actually secured to the framework. I also designed the model to be versatile for display: it stands sturdy on a tabletop or can be hung on a wall, making it a piece of wall art.

The Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), sometimes referred to as Western Yellow-legged Gull (to distinguish it from eastern populations of yellow-legged large white-headed gulls), is a large gull of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, which has only recently achieved wide recognition as a distinct species. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of either the Caspian Gull L. cachinnans, or more broadly as a subspecies of the Herring Gull L. argentatus. It is named after the German zoologist Karl Michahelles.
It is now generally accepted that the Yellow-legged Gull is a full species. The breeding range is centred around the Mediterranean Sea. In North Africa it is common in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia and increasing in places. Recent breeding has occurred in Libya and Egypt. In the Middle East a few breed in Israel and Syria with larger numbers in Cyprus and Turkey. In Europe there are colonies all along the Mediterranean coast, and also on the Atlantic islands and coasts north to Brittany and west to the Azores. It also breeds on the west side of the Black Sea; here it overlaps with the Caspian Gull but there is a difference in habitat, with the Yellow-legged Gull preferring sea cliffs and Caspian Gull on flatter shores. In recent decades birds have spread north into central and western Europe. One to four pairs have attempted to breed in southern England since 1995 (sometimes hybrid pairs with Lesser Black-backed Gulls), though colonisation has been very slow.
Many birds remain in the same area all year round but others migrate to spend the winter in mild areas of western Europe or head south as far as Senegal, the Gambia and the Red Sea. (wikipedia)
The species is quite common along the Portuguese coast. There was a big evening roost of YLGs on the local beach near where we were staying this summer. A handful of Audouin's Gulls were also in amongst them.
Amazing view of Mnt. Edith during sunrise in Jasper National Park. It is 20 min driving from Jasper town and another 15 min hike. The summit is inside the cloud and it looks like that most of time in the morning. Angel glacier on the right side is much larger live than it looks in the picture with huge wing span. Ice wall retrieves at an increasing speed every year. The ice cave at the right side is what the ice wall stood last year.

When Maggie posted a beautiful shot of lemon blossom it reminded me of the pomegranate blossom I had seen whilst on a wild orchid walk in Cyprus last year. It also reminded me that as a child we would be given half a pomegranate & a pin to pick out the fruit. It took ages & certainly kept us quiet. Maybe that's why they did it lol!

This is a former Rob Walker racing Connaught and first entry from what was to become the most successful privateer in history
The Connaight A Type was the L series sports car, designed as a two seater sports racer for Kenneth McAlpine using parts sourced at Lea-Francis, in which McAlpine drove to 4th place at the 1949 Bugatti Owners Club meeting. During 1950 the L-Series was further developed for production and the company decided to expand their racing activities into single seater racing.
The newly created Formula 2 catagory was the ideal starting point, combining an International calendar without the vast expense of Formula 1 Grand Prix racing.
The A series shared thee same basic Lea Francis engine of the L series but the heavy cast iron was abandoned in favour of an alloy block that was developed in conjunction with Laystall Engineering. By boring out the cylinders, the displacement was brought up to the two-litre limit from the original 1767 cc. What was retained was the valve drive consisting of two camshafts mounted in the block on either side. They actuated the valves with short pushrods. Fuel was fed to the engine through modified motorcycle carburettors, though late in the series life the Works cars used Hilborn-Travers Fuel Injection.
The chassis was a new simple design of lightweight construction It was a ladder frame constructed of two steel oval tubes. The first/test car featured independent suspension by wishbones all-round. After a few races the rear wishbones were discarded and replaced by a more advanced DeDion axle. The power was transferred to the rear wheels through a close-ratio Wilson pre-selector gearbox. Hydraulically assisted drum brakes provided the stopping power. Covered in a thin aluminium skin, the A-Series or A-Type Connaught was exceptionally light weighing in at under 600 kg.
In International events the Connaught scored its first victory in August 1951 in a F2 race at Ibsley with McAlpine driving.
As the A type was entering series production it was announced that the 1952. world championship would be run for Formula 2 cars instead of Formula 1. After Alfa Romeo's withdrawal from racing, this was the only way to get full and above varied grids for the Grands Prix. The production cars were the first to feature the full two litre engine and at the first major race the first chassis was also upgraded to two litre spec. The Connaught was popular with the privateers, but it struggled against the newly developed four cylinder Ferrari 500, which won every Grand Prix of the season. In British events the Connaught was still highly competitive and several victories were scored in the 1952 season.
Hilborn-Travers Fuel Injection was introduced on the new 1953 Works cars, which also featured a slightly longer wheelbase. Again the Connaught struggled at international events, but were often victorious in minor races. Most of British finest drivers like Roy Salvadori, Stirling Moss and Tony Rolt raced the Connaught. For 1954 new Formula 1 regulations were introduced with a displacement limit of 2.5 litres for Naturally Aspirated engines, spurring the developement of the Connaught B series.

Tiger sighting in Ranthambore National Park, India. It was raining heavily in the Jungle and suddenly out of the blue, there comes a tigress. A two year old wild cat.
There is a radio collar on it's neck. Park official have put radio collars in the necks of all the tigers in order to ensure better moitoring of these wild cats.

My brother and I had a design studio in the past, and I did all of the Celtics promotional work for several years through our client SportsChannel of New England. Paul Freehauf (Eagle Rock Entertainment) was the Creative Director there and we did all the design and production. I also designed the Boston Celtics' Sixth Player trophy that was sponsored through Texaco. It was retired after Reggie Lewis was awarded it. There is more info in the first comment too if you like. I also did many of the commercials for MVP sports at the time. The Johnny Most announcement in that Top 10 qwikLoadr link was used on one in particular. The Bird's Back poster in the first comment was created when Larry Bird came back early from injury, and given out at the game. The World Championship poster from 1986 was also given out at the first Boston Garden game of the 1986-1987 season. SportsChannel had no budget for the poster, so the folks who worked on it received credit on the poster, as well as 150 limited prints. The plates were destroyed once the printing was complete. Mark Burton of Boston, Massachusetts was the official printer, and that is their logo bottom left on the poster.

This is a short and long reports that I made this year in Scicli (Sicily); it's a popular event called "Ride of Saint Joseph", tradition handed down from the Middle Ages, with some features that most likely originated during the period of ancient Rome, when the ancient Romans thanked the "sol invictus", the moment of the triumph of Light (the coming of Spring) who wins the cold and dark winter. Every year during the feast of St. Joseph in Scicli (Sicily) is commemorated with a "ride" that takes place along the streets of the town, the escape that took place in Egypt riding a donkey, of Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus; for the occasion, people will light characteristic bonfires light up the night. The figurative narrative of the escape into Egypt recounted in the Gospels, it is held every year around March 19 (this year on 2 April), with the preparation of the horses that are covered by a particular structure which is then decorated - harnessed with various flowers "of spring", wild lilies, wallflowers mantles, the horses thus assume the role of real "living tableaux" bearing depictions that tell of the Holy Family and theyr escape into Egypt. The traditional feast has its roots in the peasant culture, people ask St. Joseph for his intercession so that the harvest is plentiful, so the water does not ever fail: His image is present in every stable, the Holy protected the peasant family from every misfortune, every famine. This year the city of Scicli was literally "invaded" by the presence of numerous horses and riders, anticipating the appearance of horses "harnessed", donated suggestions and choreography that seemed to belong to an ancient Sicily.

Questo è un breve e lungo report che ho realizzato quest'anno in quel di Scicli (Sicilia), della caratteristica manifestazione popolare chiamata "cavalcata di San Giuseppe", festa tradizionale che si tramanda fin dal periodo medioevale, con alcune caratteristiche che molto probabilmente originano finanche dal periodo dell'antica Roma, quando si ringraziava il "sol invictus", il momento del trionfo della Luce (ovvero il giungere della Primavera) che vince sull'inverno freddo ed oscuro. Ogni anno durante la festa di San Giuseppe a Scicli (Sicilia) si rievoca con una "cavalcata" (che si svolge lungo le vie della cittadina), la fuga che avvenne in Egitto in sella ad un asinello, di Giuseppe, Maria e del bambin Gesù; per l'occasione si accendono caratteristici falò che illuminano la notte. La narrazione figurata della fuga in Egitto raccontata dai Vangeli, si svolge ogni anno intorno al 19 marzo (quest'anno il 2 Aprile), con la preparazione dei cavalli che vengono rivestiti da una particolare struttura la quale poi viene decorata - bardata con fiori vari "della primavera", gigli selvatici, manti di violaciocche; i cavalli assumono così il ruolo di veri "tableux viventi" recanti raffigurazioni che narrano della Sacra Famiglia e della fuga in Egitto. La festa affonda le sue radici nella cultura contadina, si chiede a San Giuseppe la sua intercessione affinchè il raccolto sia abbondante, affinchè l'acqua non abbia mai a mancare: la Sua immagine è presente in ogni stalla, il Santo proteggeva ieri come oggi la famiglia contadina da ogni sventura, da ogni carestia. Quest'anno la città di Scicli è stata letteralmente "invasa" dalla presenza di numerosissimi cavalli e cavalieri che, anticipando la comparsa dei cavalli "bardati", hanno donato suggestioni e coreografie che sembravano appartenere ad una Sicilia ... antica.
