The Freer Gallery of Art joins the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery to form the Smithsonian Institution's national museums of Asian art. The Freer and Sackler galleries house the largest Asian art research library in the United States and contains art from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Islamic world, the ancient Near East, and ancient Egypt, as well as a significant collection of American art.
The Freer houses over 26,000 objects spanning 6,000 years of history from the Neolithic to modern eras. The collections include ancient Egyptian stone sculpture and wooden objects, ancient Near Eastern ceramics and metalware.

The large bronze Jockey of Artemision is one of the highlights and most popular sculptures displayed in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It depicts a young boy riding a galloping horse, capturing a dynamic and dramatic moment frozen in time.
This exceptionally rare example of Hellenistic bronze artistry dates from around 140–130 BCE. Like the Artemision Zeus, it was re-discovered off Cape Artemision.
The horse is in mid-gallop, its muscles tensed and mouth open as if breathing heavily. The boy, significantly smaller in scale, sits bareback on the powerful horse. The statue stands 2.1 meters (6 feet 10 inches) tall.

Amazing view of Mnt. Edith during sunrise in Jasper National Park. It is 20 min driving from Jasper town and another 15 min hike. The summit is inside the cloud and it looks like that most of time in the morning. Angel glacier on the right side is much larger live than it looks in the picture with huge wing span. Ice wall retrieves at an increasing speed every year. The ice cave at the right side is what the ice wall stood last year.

My brother and I had a design studio in the past, and I did all of the Celtics promotional work for several years through our client SportsChannel of New England. Paul Freehauf (Eagle Rock Entertainment) was the Creative Director there and we did all the design and production. I also designed the Boston Celtics' Sixth Player trophy that was sponsored through Texaco. It was retired after Reggie Lewis was awarded it. There is more info in the first comment too if you like. I also did many of the commercials for MVP sports at the time. The Johnny Most announcement in that Top 10 qwikLoadr link was used on one in particular. The Bird's Back poster in the first comment was created when Larry Bird came back early from injury, and given out at the game. The World Championship poster from 1986 was also given out at the first Boston Garden game of the 1986-1987 season. SportsChannel had no budget for the poster, so the folks who worked on it received credit on the poster, as well as 150 limited prints. The plates were destroyed once the printing was complete. Mark Burton of Boston, Massachusetts was the official printer, and that is their logo bottom left on the poster.

Monica & Dorothea were the only children of Peveril Turnbull 1851–1926 & his wife Phyllis Anne Kay 1849–1946 of Sandybrook Hall. They died of multiple burns aged 22 & 20 in June & April after a fire in February
This is described in George Shaw’s book ‘People of the Millennium in Ashbourne, from Cockayne to the Queen’ and a personal letter.
‘One of the greatest tragedies to occur in Ashbourne happened on the 9th February 1901 at Sandybrook Hall, the home of the Turnbull family. Peveril Turnbull had just bought a new lamp for the dinner table, and had been warned that it should not be carried whilst lit. For some reason he had not taken the advice and whilst walking out of the dining room the lamp flared and he dropped it. The lamp fell at the feet of his younger daughter Dorothea and her dress burst into flames. Her sister Monica ran to her aid but her dress also caught fire. Both girl’s injuries proved fatal. Monica died 3 weeks later on 4th March, while Dorothea lived for 2 months longer & despite attempted skin grafts, she also died on the 27th April. Their parents later became involved in the care of children in need and in Windmill Lane they built an orphanage St Monica's Home " (St Monica was the patron saint of patience)

Miss Monica Turnbull, eldest daughter of Mr. Peveril Turnbull, J.P., of Sandibrook Hall, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, died on Monday morning under exceedingly painful circumstances. A few days ago a paraffin lamp was upset in the drawing room, and her sister Dorothea was set on fire. Miss Monica ran to her aid, but before the flames were extinguished both ladies were terribly burnt. The heroic action of the elder sister cost her her life.

An inquest was held at Sandybrook Hall, Ashbourne, on Monday, on the body of Miss Dorothea Turnbull, younger daughter of Mr. Peveril Turnbull, J.P., who died from the effects of burns caused by the upsetting of a lamp on February 9th. Miss Monica Turnbull, the elder sister, lost her life in attempting to extinguish the flames, but Miss Dorothea lingered on and died from exhaustion. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.

The window contains images of the Virgin Martyr Saints with portraits of the sisters as St Barbara and St Dorothea on either side of St Cecilia who is seen falling asleep to the sounds of celestial music, a symbol of death. Small winged angel children play the organ and sing under a sorrowing angel. The celestial city is visible in one panel, viewed through a thicket of thorns.

MEMORIAL UNVEILED - On Tuesday the Bishop of Southwell unveiled in the Parish Church a memorial window dedicated to Monica and Dorothea Peveril Turnbull. ............ After the service, a public tea and garden party was held in the Hall Hotel Grounds. Subsequently, his Lordship addresses a public meeting in the Town Hall on church work and service.

1. If you could go back to any time in your life, what would you photograph?
My grandmother's house deep in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia. It was built by my grandfather in a holler. There are a couple of photos, but I would love to have taken detailed shots.
2. What kind of picture do you find the least interesting?
Corporate headshots.
3. Which picture took you the most courage to take (or publish)?
The first time I did candid street photography.
4. What do you admire most in other people’s photography?
Intention. My favorite photos are those that somehow express some kind of meaning or experience the photographer wanted to communicate. It doesn't have to be high-minded or socially "important" (those often produce eye-rolling in me). It can be simple, silly, or even mundane. But when a photo somehow evokes that sense of intention, it elevates it for me.
5. If you could follow someone around for a day, who would that be?
David Lynch.
6. Which shot would you never post on Flickr?
Any photo of my wife she did not give explicit permission to share publicly.
7. What is unphotographable?
My seven year old son in a calm, cooperative state.

Quizá para pescar gotas de agua limpia Bambusina borreri lanza sus cañas en los fondos del Lago de Sanabria con su cuerpo de collar, y pone sus broches de joya verde en la densa maraña que forma el tapiz parduzco que ahora viste su lecho. Desde hace años, lo que antes fue una superficie de arena gruesa y roca desnuda bajo unas aguas de cristal, se ha convertido en una huerta sumergida, abonada por aguas sin depurar que tiñen de neblina verde su transparencia original, esa que Bambusina quiere pescar para ella y para el Lago. .
Entre ese manto de de filamentos de algas y de cianobacterias enmarañadas, nunca antes conocido, en el que se tejen selvas inexpugnables, Bambusina como una excepción, asoma su cuerpo tenue, con sus cuentas repetidas y hermosas recordando que nunca se pierda la esperanza, esperanza de aguas limpias y aire limpio que disuelva las aguas sucias y su tristeza.
Como un bambú de transparencia de cristal Bambusina forma tallos bajo el agua como cuenta su nombre, aunque Bambusina ni es bambú ni sus tallos transparentes están hechos de cristal. Bambusina es alga solitaria y sus hilos se desgranan cuando sopla la corriente, sembrando el agua de las pequeñas joyas de turquesas que forman sus tiernas cañas.
La forma de los filamentos de esta pequeña alga que crece en las aguas ácidas es inconfundible, cada célula está formada por dos mitades que recuerdan a macetas colocadas una enfrente de la otra. Es en esta zona de unión entre las dos mitades donde se situa el centro de la célula, con un casi inapreciable itsmo y en cuyo interior se halla el núcleo.
Bambusina borreri forma filamentos rectos, que con facilidad se desarticulan y se desgranan en el agua en fragmentos de dos o varias células.
Las células de Bambusina borreri son relativamente pequeñas, de 14 a 25 micras de anchura y pueden alcanzar entre las 25 y 39 micras de longitud. Su pared celular presenta unas finísima ornamentación de poros dispuestos en filas transversales y cerca de los extremos de la célula aparecen unas estrías que sólo se aprecian bien cuando se vacía su contenido.
Los cloroplastos en Bambusina son siempre dos, uno en cada semicélula y se puede apreciar en ellos su configuración estrellada cuando se observa la célula desde uno de sus extremos.
El género Bambusina se puede reproducir asexualmente mediante la división transversal de sus células, pero no es infrecuente observar mecanismos de reproducción sexual que se lleva a cabo mediante la conjugación de los filamentos de una forma parecida a como lo hacen Mougeotia o Spirogyra
Con diferencia, la especie más extendida de este género es la que mostramos hoy aquí Bambusina borreri, de distribución cosmopolita y poco citada en nuestro país, aunque ya en 1913 Bachmann la señaló de las zonas altas de Sanabria donde también fue señalada por Margalef en los años 1955 y 1956.
Bambusina borreri se suele encontrar en aguas ácidas pobres en nutrientes y su presencia en el Lago está relacionada con los aportes de un buen número de especies que llegan desde las turberas y lagunas de la alta Sanabria a través del río Tera. Cuando llegan al Lago de Sanabria, afectado de la contaminación de aguas residuales desde hace años, sus días estarán contados, pero siempre dejan en él la luz de una esperanza para su recuperación
Las fotografías que mostramos, se han realizado a 400 aumentos empleando las técnicas de contraste de interferencia contraste de fases y epifluorescencia, se han tomado sobre una muestra recolectada a cuatro metros de profundidad, el 12 de marzo de 2018 por Tomás y Mª José en las inmediaciones de la Isla de Moras en el Lago de Sanabria (Zamora), desde el catamarán Helios Sanabria el primer catamarán construido en el Planeta propulsado por energía eólica y solar.

Maria Teresa de Filippis (born 11 November 1926 in Naples, Italy / † 9.1.2016 Scanzorosciate) was the first of five female Formula One racing drivers in the sport's history. She participated in five World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 May 1958. She scored no championship points. She also participated in several non-Championship Formula One races. The four other women who attempted to start in Formula One were Lella Lombardi, Divina Galica, Desiré Wilson and Giovanna Amati.

Maria Teresa de Filippis (* 11. November 1926 in Neapel / † 9.1.2016) war eine ehemalige italienische Automobilrennfahrerin.
Sie war die erste Frau, die bei einem Formel-1-Weltmeisterschaftslauf startete, und zwar beim GP von Belgien 1958 auf Maserati. Sie beendete das Rennen als Zehnte.
Zuvor hatte sie bereits, ebenfalls auf Maserati, Sportwagenrennen bestritten und erfolglos versucht, sich für den GP von Monaco 1958 zu qualifizieren. Bei zwei weiteren Rennen im gleichen Jahr schied sie jeweils aus.
In der Formel-1-Saison 1959 trat sie zum Großen Preis von Monaco auf Porsche an, für den sie sich allerdings nicht qualifizieren konnte. Nach dem Unfalltod ihres guten Freundes Jean Behra auf der AVUS 1959 beendete sie ihre Karriere.
Die gebürtige Neapolitanerin fuhr 1948 ihr erstes Rennen und gewann auf einem Fiat Topolino auf Anhieb ihre Klasse. Bei ihren ersten Rennen traf sie noch mit dem wohl größten italienischen Rennfahrer aller Zeiten zusammen: mit Tazio Tuvolari.
Zwischen 1949 und 1953 holte sie sich viele Siege in einem Fiat-Giannini Sportwagen. 1954 wurde sie Zweite im Straßenrennen Giro die Sicilia. 1955 wurden ihr von Maserati ein Werkswagen zur Verfügung gestellt. Mit einem A6GCS 2000 belegte sie Rang neun in der Targa Florio und Rang drei in den 10 Stunden von Messina. 1956 sah man Maria Teresa wieder auf Maserati bei der Mille Miglia. Beim 1000 km Rennen von Monza schied sie in ihrer Klasse führend aus, bei den 1000 km von Buenos Aires lag sie auf Rang sieben im Gesamtklassement, als sie einen Unfall hatte.
1958 sorgte sie für eine Sensation. Ehrgeizig und furchtlos wie sie nun mal war, debütierte sie in der Formel 1 auf einem Maserati 250F. Immerhin ein Auto, mit dem Fangio im Jahr davor Weltmeister wurde. Im Grand Prix von Syrakus, auf einer besonders gefährlichen Straßenrennstrecke, wurde sie Fünfte, in Monaco hatte sie Motorschaden, im Grand Prix von Europa, in Spa-Francorchamps, wurde sie Zehnte, in Monza schied sie 12 Runden vor Schluss auf Rang fünf liegend aus.
1959 konnte sie sich in Monaco mit dem Spezial-Porsche von Jean Behra nicht qualifizieren. Im 10 Stunden Rennen von Messina wurde sie auf Maserati Dritte. Als Jean Behra am 1. August 1959 beim Sportwagenrennen auf der Avus tödlich verunglückte, beendete sie ihre Karriere. Die Frau, der von Fangio abwärts ein ganzes Grand Prix-Startfeld den Hof machte, heiratete den gebürtigen Wiener Theo Huschek, mit dem sie heute in Oberitalien lebt. Sie ist nicht nur Ehrenpräsidentin des Clubs der einstigen Grand Prix-Piloten, sondern zusammen mit Theo Herz und Seele dieser elitären Vereinigung, zu deren Gründungsmitgliedern der fünffache Weltmeister Juan Manuel Fangio gehörte.

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is a basic research centre dedicated to exploring the world around us at its most fundamental level. It began in the summer of 1999 when Mike Lazaridis, founder of Research in Motion and the innovator who was instrumental in launching the smart phone revolution, found himself in a position to help foster research and innovation in Canada by establishing a world-class institute devoted to theoretical physics.
Research
Since research operations began in the fall of 2001, the Institute has grown to include over 80 resident researchers who are involved in day-to-day operations. Additionally, the vigorous Visitor Program has enabled PI to host hundreds of international researchers each year for collaborations and workshops. The current groups involved with cross-disciplinary research include Condensed Matter, Cosmology & Gravitation, Particle Physics, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Information Theory, Superstring Theory and related areas.
Training
Among activities that help develop future generations of scientists, is the innovative Perimeter Scholars International. There is no obvious match for Charles in the Soldiers Died in the Great War database – the nearest match is a Cecil Berjew Brooke, a 2nd Lieutenant of the Alexandra Regiment, Battalion Not Shown, who was Killed in Action on the 1st July 1916. As with all Officers, no place of birth or residence is shown.
(Note – references to Alexandra Regiment, Princess of Wales Own and Green Howards are all alternative names for the Yorkshire Regiment).
The Medal Index Card for Second Lieutenant Charles “Beyent” Brooke, Yorkshire Regiment, is held at the National Archive under reference WO 372/3/89092 . He had originally been a Second Lieutenant in the Suffolk Regiment before becoming a Captain during his attachment from the Suffolks to the Royal West Surrey Regiment. He reverted to his former rank on joining the Yorkshire Regiment.

Most of any research I could do on this man has already been done – his father collected his letters home and had them privately published as “Letters from the boy”. The last one, dated 30th June 1916, ends:-
It is impossible to fear death out here when one is no longer an individual but a member of a regiment and of an army. To be killed means nothing to me, and it is only you who will suffer for it. You really pay the cost. I have been looking at the stars and thinking what an immense distance they are away! What an insignificant thing the loss of say forty years of life is compared with them. It seems scarcely worth talking about.
Well, good-bye you darlings. Try not to worry about it, and remember that we shall meet again, really quite soon. This letter is going to be posted if -----

Charles Berjew Brooke was born on the 7th March 1895 at Colne House, Brantham on River Stour, Suffolk, the only son of Mr Charles Berjew Brooke, an industrialist who manufactured "xylonite", i.e. celluloid. To avoid confusion, the younger Charles was known in the family as "Carl". He had a connection with Wales, because his mother Gwenddolen was the sister of Mrs Gertrude Bailey of "Stelvio" Newport, a lady prominent in her own right, and married to Mr Charles Henry Bailey of the Tyne Engine Works at Newport and Barry.
Carl was educated at Colchester Grammar School, followed by a preparatory school, Bilton Grange near,Rugby, and Bradfield College, Berks. He was interested in becoming a soldier from an early age, an interest stimulated by living near to the military town of Colchester, but a bout of diphtheria prevented him from taking part in strenuous exercise. Instead, to his great joy, he was taught rifle shooting , and was sent to represent the school at Bisley. He was allowed to join the college O.T.C., and awarded his certificate "A" in 1911, with extra marks for originality, and he left on the 31st of July 1913 with the rank of Colour Sergeant.
Carl must have had a flair for languages, as well as science, because he continued his education by studying chemistry in Berlin. Here he eagerly read as many German military books as he could find, including the German Field Service Book, as he intended to sit for the Army Interpreters’ Examination. He thought that every man should be trained, as he was sure that Germany intended to go to war against Britain, and at the end of July 1914, 6 days before war broke out between Britain and Germany, he returned home.
On his return, he applied for a commission in the Suffolk Special Reserve. To his disappointment, he was posted to 3rd Bn Norfolk Reg. in August 1914, but soon transferred to 3rd. Bn. Suffolk Reg. On Sept. 4th he was appointed a temporary Capt., dating from August 14th.
During his training he was marked top out of about thirty who joined with him. He was not to stay with them for long because in December he was attached to the 1st Bn The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey’s) and with 200 other reinforcements was sent out to France to replace the heavy losses they had suffered. In his letters home he described how well behaved his men were when they arrived in France, but he observed, rather wryly, that it could have been because they hadn’t been paid for a fortnight. He also commented on the wild Welsh and Scots who jumped out of the train at every halt and then raced after the train and got in anywhere, causing a lot of trouble and necessitating an "all change" at the next stop.
During his time at the Front he was able to make good use of his German, and he seems to have enjoyed his conversations with the prisoners who were brought in. He was also quite taken with their helmets, but felt that "it would hardly have been polite to bag the poor men’s hats". He also used his time to improve his French, and says that he has a good grasp of "Frenglish". He wrote home quite regularly, with detailed descriptions of life in the trenches. He made light of the fact that he had been shelled quite frequently, describing the sound as being like "water poured into a big jug from a tap"
In June, the War Office wrote to his Colonel asking whether he would recommend Lt. Brooke for a full Captaincy, but the Col. Replied that he had "Not enough service". The London Gazette for Sept. 4th.1915 records: Suffolk Regiment – Lieutenant to be Captain Charles B. Brooke, dating from August 14th, 1915.
On the morning of 25th Sept.1915, he was in action with the 1st Bn. The Queen’s at La Bassee, near Givenchy. All the other officers of B and D companies were killed, leaving him in command of the two companies, as well as some men from the H.L.I. and Oxford L.I. as they rushed the German trenches.
Encouraged by the 19 year old officer, they used up all their supply of bombs as well as those of the Germans before being driven back. Although wounded, Carl was the last to leave the trench, and it was reported that before leaving, he emptied his revolver at the advancing Germans, then threw the empty gun at a German officer, knocking him over.
He was wounded twice, once in the face which tore his cheek and mouth and knocked out two teeth and a serious chest wound, which fortunately, did not damage his lungs. He was admitted to 3rd. General Hospital at Le Treport.
On October 1st, he was sent to Alexandra Hospital for Officers, Millfield Lane, Highgate, London. In January 1916, he was mentioned in despatches, and on 14th he was awarded a D.S.O. for this action. The staff and works people from the village made a presentation to him for bringing honour to the village. His response was typically modest, he said "I was one of the lucky ones. Of course, I am glad to have won the D.S.O., but I want you to think of all those men who will not get anything, and who have deserved a decoration over and over again". He was invited to transfer to the Queen’s, and would have been happy to serve with them as a Lieutenant, but the Army had other plans.
In Feb. 1916 he was chosen for a commission in the Regular Army but it was in the Yorkshire Regiment, (The Green Howards’).Capt. Charles B. Brooke, D.S.O. was to be Sec. Lt., but to retain his higher rank until he joined a Regular Unit. In April 1916 he was sent to the 2nd. Battalion, which was serving with the 30th. division in France. He soon settled down to trench work, saying that his men were the best in the battalion, good at "sticking things" and "quite equal to the Queen’s". He said "I wouldn’t be pushed out of this regiment now". He was offered the chance of being trained as a staff officer, but said that he did not think he would be a success at it.
On the 1st July 1916, the 30th Division was to take Montauban. At 7.30a.m. the battalion was in Headquarters Avenue Trench with a battle strength of 24 officers and 688 other ranks who were to be responsible for occupying and consolidating the German front and support lines once they had been captured.
Carl was in command of "A" company, as it, advanced with "B" company under heavy machine gun fire, followed shortly by "C" and "D". Brooke was mortally wounded in the stomach, remaining alive just long enough for the stretcher bearers to reach the medical officer. His servant, Pte. Readman, reported his death, and that he had been buried at Bois de Talus Cemetery, near Carnoy. Lt.Col. Walter F. Young, commanding 2nd. Yorkshire Regiment wrote movingly of Carl as "a great favourite with all of us", and tried to reassure the family that he had not seemed to be in pain from his wound, and had been able to speak to the doctor before he died, as well as telling the stretcher bearers that it was hard lines being hit in the stomach. Col. Young said that he was most grieved at his loss, but had died as "he would have liked to do". He wrote to Carl’s mother, saying that he felt his loss more than that of any other officer, calling him "the cheeriest and best of good fellows", and describing their mutual enthusiasm for the works of Rudyard Kipling.
On July 3rd 1916, it was announced that 2nd. Lt. C.B. Brooke, D.S.O., was to be Temp. Capt. In Yorkshire Regiment, dated from May 16th. 1916.

That wasn’t all there was to remember his last hours by.
He was commissioned into 3rd Suffolk in 1914, having been born and raised in Brantham, near Manningtree. He had been wounded badly whilst winning his DSO in early 1916, and we heard of how even after emptying every chamber of his pistol into the advancing enemy, he then hurled his revolver at one of them, knocking him over! After his death on 1st July, his family published the letters he wrote home in a small memorial volume entitled “Letters from The Boy.” It was said that for many years his blood-stained and battered tunic hung in a frame in the hallway of his parents home.

This birth date is quoted in the online biography for Charles, as well as one of the family tree links.
The birth of a Charles Berjew Brooke was registered with the Civil Authorities in the District of Samford in Suffolk in the April to June quarter, (Q2), of 1895. Then, as now, you had 42 days after the event to register the birth without facing a fine and a court appearance so a registration in this quarter is not incompatible with the date of birth quoted. Samford District included the Civil Parish of Brantham.
The marriage of his parents, Charles Berjew Brooke and Maud Gwenddolen Buchanan, was recorded in the Islington District of London in the April to June quarter, (Q2), of 1894.

The 6 year old Charles B Brooke, born Brantham, was recorded living at Colne House, Brantham. This was the household of his parents, Charles B., (32, Manager of Brantham Works, British Xyl.Co. Ld., born Liverpool, Lancashire), and Maude G., (26, born Cardiff, Glamorganshire). As well as Charles the couple also have a daughter, Gwenddolen F., (4, born Brantham). Completing the household is father Charles’ unmarried brother in law, Harold G. Buchanan, (22, Superintendent Xyl. Works, born London) and two live in domestic servants.
1911 Census of England and Wales
The 16 year old Charles B. Brooke, born ”Manningtree, Essex”, was recorded as a boarding school student at Bradfield, Reading, Berkshire.
His parents were still recorded living at Colne House, Brantham. Charles Berjew Junior and Mary Gwenddolen Brooke had then been married for 16 years and have had 2 children, both then still alive, but neither was at home. Charles, 42, is recorded as the Xylonite Works manager. Mary was then 38.
His sister Gwenddolen was also at boarding school – in her case at St Felix School, Reydon, Sothwold, Suffolk.
Until September 1911 the quarterly index published by the General Registrars Office did not show information about the mothers maiden name. A check of the General Registrars Office Index of Birth for England and Wales 1911 – 1983 shows no likely additional children of parents Charles and Maud.

1st Queens Battalion War Diary 25th September 1915
Section B.2. Our leading line advanced at 6.7 a.m. and reached the German 3rd line without great opposition. The attack was evidently a complete surprise.
The Battn. advanced on a frontage of two platoons. D. Coy. (Major BUNBURY) on the right and B. Coy, (Capt. Brooke) on the left. The advance was necessarily slow to keep behind the smoke, B & D Companies reached the German lines and gained touch with the 2/Oxford L.I. and the 2/H L I on the left and right respectively. The Support Company (C Coy) under Captain Weeding held on front line of trenches and, at about 8.15 A M two platoons of this Company reinforced B & D Companies, taking up a supply of Bombs with them, Lieut E D DREW commanded this party.
The Enemy developed a strong bombing attack on both flanks of the Regt., and our men were unable to reply effectively owing to a lack of bombs. About 9.45 a.m. the two and half companies were obliged to fall back into our own lines, under a very heavy machine gun fire from the right flank.
Casualties:- 2Lts A W A BRADSHAW, C D M FOWLER and E I B HOWELL killed & missing, 2 Lt F G PLANT wounded and missing, Major J.K.N. BUNBURY, Capt C B BROOKE, Lieutr H P FOSTER and 2 Lieut R G POYESON-MICES(?) wounded. Other Ranks, 19 Killed, 21 missing believed killed, 138 wounded, 80 Missing and wounded & missing, 7 suffering from gas. 1 died of wounds. Total 265 other ranks.
The remainder of the day was spent in reorganizing the line and in collecting wounded, burying dead etc.

XIII CORPS -CAPTURE OF MONTAUBAN -30th DIVISION
The wire had been cut successfully. The Germans were mostly caught in dugouts, so little resistance was encountered
89th Brigade : starting from four lines of assembly trenches at 7.30 AM ,17th and 20th King's met little resistance and moved on to Casement and Alt Trenches. The 2nd Bedfordshire were in support and mopping-up. The attack pressed on to Dublin Trench. At 8.30 AM the right of the line joined with the French and the left, in the east end of Glatz Redoubt; simultaneously, the 3rd Battalion of the French 153rd Regiment entered Dublin Redoubt at the east of Dublin Trench. The position was consolidated
21st Brigade : The enemy here was also caught in its dugouts so little resistance was encountered
Leading, with 19th Manchesters, 18th King's went forward until they caught up with British barrage at Alt Trench, where they had to wait until the barrage lifted at 7.45 AM , before occupying it. The Manchesters had few losses but the King's were caught by enfilade machine-gun fire from the west side of Railway Valley. Fire from the Warren caused severe casualties among 2nd Green Howards who were in support, and few managed to cross no man's land. A party of Germans came out of a deep dugout and proceeded eastwards but were out-bombed by a party of moppers-up. This enabled 18th King's to advance along Train Alley to Glatz Redoubt, reaching it at 8.35 AM and joining with 89th Brigade
90th Brigade : At 8.30 AM 90th Brigade began its advance on Montauban, passing through 21st Brigade with 16th and 17th Manchesters. The 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers were in close support. Despite machine-gun fire from Bresleau Alley, they continued their advance, and the German machine-gun was finally wiped out by a Lewis-gun of the 16th Manchesters. Under cover of a smoke-screen, the Manchesters and Royal Scots Fusiliers entered the village of Montauban at 10.05 AM , to find it deserted. By 11 AM the second objective in Montauban Alley was entered. The Germans were pulling back in large numbers. The 16th Manchesters rushed the battery in Caterpillar Valley and captured the first three guns of the battle. Montauban was consolidated.
At 12.30 PM 4th Coy, 20th King's (89th Brigade) attacked La Briqueterie from Dublin Trench under cover of an artillery bombardment
Simultaneously, bombers moved up Nord Alley cutting off the retreat of the garrison. By 12.35 PM La Briqueterie was taken, as were all objectives and the position was consolidated. By 6 PM the road to Maricourt-Montauban had been repaired 200 yards beyond the old German front line

Maricourt is a village situated on the D938, Albert-Peronne Road, 10.5 kilometres from Albert.
History Information
Maricourt was, at the beginning of the Battles of the Somme 1916, the point of junction of the British and French forces, and within a very short distance of the front line; it was lost in the German advance of March 1918, and recaptured at the end of the following August. The Cemetery, originally known as Maricourt Military Cemetery No.3, was begun by fighting units and Field Ambulances in the Battles of the Somme 1916, and used until August 1917; a few graves were added later in the War, and at the Armistice it consisted of 175 graves which now form almost the whole of Plot I. It was completed after the Armistice by the concentration of graves from the battlefields in the immediate neighbourhood and from certain smaller burial grounds, including:-
BRIQUETERIE EAST CEMETERY, MONTAUBAN, on the East side of the brick-works between Maricourt and Montauban, containing the graves of 46 soldiers from the United Kingdom who fell in the latter half of 1916.
CASEMENT TRENCH CEMETERY, MARICOURT, on the West side of the road to the Briqueterie, in which 163 soldiers from the United Kingdom and one from South Africa were buried in 1916-1918.
FARGNY MILL FRENCH MILITARY CEMETERY, CURLU, on the North bank of the Somme, in which six soldiers from the United Kingdom and two from Australia were buried in 1916-1918.
LA COTE MILITARY CEMETERY, MARICOURT, a little way West of Peronne Road Cemetery, containing the graves of 38 soldiers from the United Kingdom and one from Australia who fell in 1916-1917.
TALUS BOISE BRITISH CEMETERY, CARNOY, between Carnoy and Maricourt, at the South end of a long copse. It was used in the latter half of 1916 and (chiefly by the 5th Royal Berks) in August 1918, and it contained the graves of 175 soldiers from the United Kingdom and five from South Africa.

There are now 1348, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, 366 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to 26 soldiers from the United Kingdom known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of three soldiers from the United Kingdom, buried in other cemeteries, whose graves could not be found.

As part of the commemoration of the outbreak of the Great War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission added a number of original documents to their website. One of those on their webpage for Charles Brooke is a Concentration Report. These reports detail an exhumation and move to the current resting place. He was one of at least 10 graves moved from map reference 62c.A.14.b.5.4 into Peronne Road Cemetery. Charles was the only officer – the other nine British soldiers all died in 1918 Someone has written in blue pencil down the side of the report “Maricourt 3/95E”, which might imply they came from either the La Cote Cemetery or Casement Trench Cemetery.
A report prepared for the Commission to take over maintenance of the graves indicates they were at the new location by the start of November 1920.

The 1916 Probate Calendar records that Charles Berjew Brooke, of Colne House, Brantham. Suffolk, a Captain 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment D.S.O., died 1 July 1916 in France. Administration of his estate was granted at the Ipswich Court on the 28th August 1916 to Charles Berjew Brooke, (the younger), manager of the British Xylonite company’s Brantham works. His effects were valued at £322 2s 4d.

The edition of The Times, dated Monday July 10, 1916 records his death and includes a brief obituary.
CAPTAIN CHARLES BERJEW BROOKE, D.S.O., Yorkshire Regiment, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Brooke, jun. of Colne House, Brantham, Suffolk, and was 21 years of age. He was educated at Belton Grange, near Rugby, and Bradfield College. He was gazetted to the 3rd Suffolk Regiment on the outbreak of war, and was sent to France, attached to the 1st Queen’s, in December 1914, and rose to the rank of captain. He was seriously wounded while leading his company in the attack on September 25, 1915, and was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the D.S.O. In January 1916 he was chosen for a commission in the Regular Army, and was gazetted to the Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed on July 1st “while leading his company into action in this recent attack”.
The Births, Marriages and Deaths announcement in the Western Mail on the following included a note on the death of Charles “On Active Service”.
BROOKE.- On July 1st, in France, Charles Berjew Brooke, D.S.O., Second-lieutenant, Princess of Wales’ Own Yorkshire Regiment, aged 21, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Brooke Junr., of Colne House, Brantham, Suffolk, and nephew of Mrs. C.H. Bailey, Stelvio, Newport, Mon.
That final letter was printed in full in the editions of The Surrey Advertiser, dated Saturday, July 22nd 1916 and Monday, July 24, 1916, under the heading Former Queen’s Officer Letter. It is noted that there are many in The Queens who will remember Captain Brooke, and “many others who will find consolation in the letter”. On the same page in the Officers Killed section, as well as his name appearing in the list there is also a few lines about him.
Lieut. and Temp. Capt. Brooke, D.S.O., Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed in action on July 1st, was attached to a battalion of The Queens from December 1914, until he was wounded on September 25th 1915. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Brooke, Colne House, Brantham, Suffolk, and was 22. His colonel writes: “As soon as he joined us we recognised him as a born leader of men, and I at once put him in command of a company. He was leading it to the assault when he was shot.”

Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis
This female Long-tailed Duck is still on I-82 Freeway Pond #4. It was snowing today as she dove at the slushy edge of the ice. The lighting matched her plumage nicely, though wasn't great for photos or video. It was nice and sunny 3 days ago when I found her here. This site requires a Washington State Discover Pass for motor vehicles.
Scott Downes & Luke Safford used me -- they tricked me into helping them cheat on their illegitimate Big Day. They are still lying, pretending to not understand why I could be upset with them for doing that to me and for other unethical and illegal behavior by them.
Scott -- Have you done that to your own daughters? If someone did that to your daughters, would you be happy with that?
Luke -- Have you done that to your own children?
Even if you two have done that to your own children, you should not have done that to me. Your behavior is inexcusable. You are not above the Birding Code of Ethics. You are not above the law. You are not above Big Day Rules.
Who will get them to disqualify themselves from their illegitimate Big Day? Scott should not be allowed to count his Big Year during which he cheated in several ways on his Big Day and he knowingly trespassed on Priest Rapids Dam and on the Yakima Training Center military installation. He got caught and kicked off of each. His claim of ignorance about trespassing on the dam is a flat-out lie. I had previously told him in person specifically that the head of security for Priest Rapids Dam said that it was prohibited, and Scott acknowledged that he understood it. After trespassing and falsifying his checklist location, Scott acknowledged in writing to me that he knew it was prohibited, yet Scott pretended on Tweeters to be going on the advice of other local listers. Andy Stepniewski perhaps? Andy knows and knew better, and explained that quite clearly to my wife & I in his kitchen when he described to us how he trespasses there. Maybe Andy told Scott he could get away with it, but I doubt Andy pretended to Scott that it was allowed. (Andy was with Scott when the two of them were caught trespassing in the Live Fire area on the Yakima Training Center, proving Scott knows Andy trespasses.) Birders, especially those in positions of authority in organizations such as the Yakima Valley Audubon Society, Washington Ornithological Society, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, & eBird, should speak out to discourage unethical and illegal bird listing practices, even when it concerns their colleagues. Don't enable problem listers. Good cops are worth their weight in gold.
My original photos have embedded GPS time/date/location -- proving when & where I took the photos. I would never falsify a checklist, nor info under my photos, and never have done so. That would be the antithesis of my bird watching.
Please always consider the sensitivity of birds, nearby humans, and the environment.
Recently I finally received an apology (one he soon qualified, and later lied about, trying to pretend he hadn't apologized -- see next paragraph) from Scott Downes, one of two listers who used me to help them cheat on their Big Day -- His "I'm sorry." was a baby step. The other lister, Luke Safford, has not yet apologized. They both continue to lie, falsely claiming that they don't understand any reasons I'm disgusted by them and others who behave like them. I continue to wish my efforts weren't necessary, and that they and other problem listers would stop their dishonest and disingenuous arguments in defense of their bad and illegal habits. Once you're caught cheating on your Big Day, you're not morally qualified to do another. Leave that competition to decent folks. Perhaps as a state biologist and a preacher, Scott Downes & Luke Safford think they're exempted from ethical constraints while bird listing and while attacking me to try to cover their deeds. They're not.
Edit: To be clear, Scott Downes said, "I'm sorry." several times, but soon said "It doesn't matter anymore anyway, since Eric [Heisey] and I broke that record." With him qualifying it so, it is not an apology. (And why should anyone believe he didn't cheat again?) I should more accurately say that he said "I'm sorry" several times, but did not honestly apologize. I said to him that it does matter -- that he (Scott Downes) & Luke (Safford) cheated, that they used me to cheat, and that they continue to be dishonest about that. Scott Downes also has yet to show the photos he took that day of their claimed (relocated) Tricolored Blackbird. At first he claimed his photos "didn't turn out". At the time of his apology this summer, he changed his story again -- he claimed that he did not even have a camera with him during his (illegitimate) Big Day. My guess is his photos that day showed that their claimed Tricolored Blackbird was not a Tricolored Blackbird -- if so, ironic since they'd cheated to "get" it. Scott volunteered that he would remove the Tricolored Blackbird from his list. I doubt he has. I also doubt that he has contacted Washington Birder (the Knittles) to finally acknowledge his & Luke's cheating & remove their illegitimate Big Day from the records. I think that Scott Downes' & Luke Safford's names should actually stay on the record books, with the note that they were disqualified due to cheating.
To Yakima County's problem listers: Don't cheat on your Big Days. Stop pishing and using playback on rare and sensitive birds and in heavily birded areas. Give others credit for their finds. Don't lie and intentionally mislead to cover your misdeeds, misidentifications, identifictions, and illegal birding practices. Slipping in a different photo when you screwed-up, inserting a photo you took on a later date to your eBird checklist, trying to get me to trespass for your Yakima CBC, blocking links to American Birding Association articles about birding ethics, hiding your trespassing, lying about your apology, using my Dad's death to take a stab at me -- shame on you.
Since bird listing is dominated by white males, it's sadly unsurprising that abusive behavior by them is accepted by their ranks.

En 1573 la administración virreinal cedió amplios terrenos a las religiosas concepcionistas en el viejo calpulli prehispánico de Moyotlán (más tarde barrio de San Juan) para que establecieran un convento.
La fundación, dedicada a la Reina del Cielo traducción de la expresión latina Regina Coeli y a la Natividad de la Virgen María, fue aprobada por el Papa Gregorio XIII en 1578.
El templo del monasterio se edificó en el ángulo que forman las actuales calles de Bolívar y Regina, frente a un espacio libre que ya en el siglo XVII se conocía con el nombre de Plaza Chiquita de Regina. Su forma irregular se origino en el trazo de una de las acequias que atravesaban ese baldío. El convento y el templo primitivos fueron muy pobres, con cimentación deficiente.
La reestructuración de estos edificios se realizó en 1656 a expensas de Melchor de Terreros. El templo se reformo después y se abrió el 13 de septiembre de 1731. La obra la proyectó el arquitecto Miguel Custodio Durán y la financió el arzobispo José Lanciego y Eguilaz.
Como todas las plazas y calles de la ciudad colonial anteriores a la gestión del virrey Revillagigedo, la Plaza de Regina no escapó a la suciedad y abandono en que se encontraban los espacios exteriores de la metrópoli: falta de drenaje conveniente, encharcamientos constantes, ausencia de empedrados y banquetas y carencia de iluminación nocturna, que la convertían en un lugar peligroso durante las noches. Además, en ella frecuentemente se asentaban tianguis y tablados de toda índole, habiendo sido utilizada, incluso, para matanza de animales, mezclándose a todas esas incomodidades el espectáculo de mendigos y menesterosos que se aposentaban en ella durante las funciones religiosas.
Transformación radical sufrió la plaza al ser exclaustradas las monjas concepcionistas, conjuntamente con las de otras órdenes religiosas, el 8 de marzo de 1863, y aunque estas volvieron al convento durante el imperio de Maximiliano de Habsburgo, el 14 de noviembre de 1867 se entregó el convento a la Secretaría de Guerra, sirviendo de cuartel hasta el 15 de junio de 1871, cuando el gobierno de la República lo dió, en pago de adeudos, al acaudalado Ramón Obregón.
El templo, por su parte, permaneció abierto al culto. Un informe rendido por el regidor del ramo en 1868, hace mención de las obras realizadas para que desaparecieran la insalubridad y los muladares acumulados en la plaza, donde ya existía una fuente pública que cuidaban las autoridades de la ciudad, insistiendo en que debía barrerse y regarse todos los días "por los aguadores que concurren a la fuente de Regina a sacar agua", así como para que los areneros, carboneros, zacateros o cualquier otro tratante de este género, asearan el lugar que ocupasen con sus mercaderías. Además, en febrero de ese mismo año, se instalaron faroles de hojalata con aparatos de gas líquido, de trementina, de veinte luces, sustituyendo al alumbrado de aceite instalado por la administración colonial.
Gracias a la generosidad y filantropía de la señorita María Concepción Máxima Béistegui y García, quien a su muerte, ocurrida en 1873, cedió sus bienes para la fundación de un hospital en lo que fuera el Convento de Regina, se pudieron salvar de la destrucción, que se había iniciado poco antes, el claustro principal y las crujías adyacentes al mismo. Así, el denominado Hospital Concepción Béistegui, después de laboriosa adaptación, fue inaugurado por el Gral. Porfirio Díaz el 21 de marzo de 1886.
El resto del convento fue dividido en lotes, construyéndose en su lugar varias casas y locales sin ningún valor arquitectónico. En 1967, las autoridades del Departamento del Distrito Federal, ante la necesidad de contar con amplios espacios abiertos en esta zona de la ciudad, eligieron la Plaza de Regina como una de las primeras en la restauración de los centros cívicos capitalinos.
Entonces la plaza fue cerrada al tránsito vehicular en el tramo de la calle de Regina que corría frente al templo, dejándolo fluir únicamente por la calle lateral ubicada al norte de la plaza, y llevando el pavimento pétreo, en adoquín de San Luis Potosí, hasta la fachada misma del templo. Los árboles existentes fueron reubicados al norte de la plaza para permitir mayor visibilidad al edificio.

In 1573 the colonial administration gave the spacious grounds of the old religious Conceptionists calpulli prehispanic Moyotlan (later district of San Juan) to establish a convent.
The foundation, dedicated to the Queen of Heaven translation of the Latin Regina Coeli and the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, was approved by Pope Gregory XIII in 1578.
The temple of the monastery was built in the angle formed by the present streets of Bolívar and Regina, compared to free space in the seventeenth century and was known by the name of Piazza Regina Chiquita. Its irregular shape originated in the stroke of one of the canals running through this wasteland. The convent and the primitive church were very poor, poor foundation.
The restructuring of these buildings was performed in 1656 at the expense of Melchor de Terreros. The temple was later reformed and opened on September 13, 1731. The work was designed by the architect Miguel Custodio Durán and funded the Archbishop Jose Lanciego and Eguilaz.
Like all the squares and streets of the colonial city prior to the management of Viceroy Revillagigedo, Plaza Regina did not escape the dirt and neglect that were outside spaces of the metropolis: lack of appropriate drainage, ponding constant, no paving and sidewalks and lack of night lighting, which became a dangerous place at night. Moreover, she often settled swap meets and tablados of all kinds, having been used, even to killing animals, mixing all these discomforts the spectacle of beggars and needy that aposentaban there for religious functions.
Square underwent radical transformation when exclaustradas the Franciscan nuns, together with those of other religious orders, the March 8, 1863, and although these returned to the monastery during the reign of Maximilian of Hapsburg, 14 November 1867 gave the convent to the Secretary of War, serving as headquarters until June 15, 1871, when the government of the Republic gave it in payment of debts, the wealthy Ramón Obregón.
The church, meanwhile, remained open for worship. A report issued by the ruler of the sector in 1868, makes mention of the work undertaken to disappear unhealthiness and middens accumulated in the square, where there was already a public source guarded the city authorities, insisting he swept and watered every day "by the watermen who attend Regina source to draw water" as well as for litter boxes, coal, or any other dealer zacateros of this kind, asearan occupy the place with their merchandise. Moreover, in February of that year, tin lanterns were installed with liquid gas appliances, turpentine, twenty lights, replacing oil lamps installed by the colonial administration.
Thanks to the generosity and philanthropy of Miss Maria Conception High Beistegui and Garcia, who at his death in 1873, transferred its assets to the foundation of a hospital in what was once the Convent of Regina, were saved from destruction, that had begun shortly before, the main cloister and the bays adjacent to it. So-called Beistegui Conception Hospital, after laborious adaptation, was inaugurated by General Porfirio Diaz on March 21, 1886.
The rest of the convent was divided into lots, built several houses in place and local architectural worthless. In 1967, the authorities of the Federal District, to the need for open spaces in this area of the city, chose Regina Square as one of the first in the restoration of civic centers in the capital.
Then the square was closed to traffic on the stretch of Regina Street that ran opposite the temple, just letting it flow down the side street just north of the square, carrying the stone pavement in San Luis Potosi cobble up the facade of the temple itself. Existing trees were relocated to the north of the square to allow greater visibility to the building.
