BOSS Dumpling Making at the Senior Home

CAMP HUMPHREYS – As part of its outreach program and in celebration of Lunar New Year, the Camp Humphreys Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers and other volunteers worked together to make and share mandoo dumplings with the elderly Feb. 2.
The word mandoo originated from China and is considered a special food, especially for the beginning of the New Year. Eating dumpling soup on Lunar New Year’s Day means “Happy New Year.”
More than 40 members of the Camp Humphreys community took part in and experienced making dumplings and shared it with the residents of the House of Wusula, in Yangseong-myeon, Anseoung-si.
The purpose of this event was to celebrate Lunar New Year with the residents and being a good neighbor in the local community and to give back to the local community by getting involved with Korean culture. Moreover, not only can the Soldiers make lifelong friends, but they also will have a more positive outlook while serving here.
“What better way to give back to the community than for our military personnel to get involved with Korean culture and specifically learning some of these celebrations like Lunar New Year,” said Spc. Kareen K. Medeiros, the Humphreys BOSS President /Area III Coordinator. “And, it is a nice way for the Soldiers to get to know what is around them. They work extremely hard. For them to have downtime to have some fun and something positive, this is a wonderful thing for us to get involved in the program like this.”
During the volunteering, the participants experienced a variety of Korean traditions for the first time. They played a Korean New Year’s game called Yutnori, which is a kind of Korean board game. They also sang together the Korean folk song, “Arirang” and a Korean New Year’s song, “Seolnal.”
Some also had the opportunity to wear traditional Korean clothing, called Hanbok, which can prove to be difficult to wear without help from someone with experience. While wearing the clothing, participants learned New Year’s greetings and performed a New Year’s bow to the elderly.
Overall, the highlight of the volunteer trip was dumpling making. Everyone gathered around the tables and started making dumplings in accordance with an interpreters’ explanation.
“I really enjoyed myself,” said Pfc. Ryan R. Resendez, assigned to Bravo Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion . “I was glad to make the elderly smile and meet new people. It was great day. If I have another chance, I’d definitely like to come again.”
Hungerford Bridge is a triplet of bridges over the River Thames in London, between Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge. It comprises of a steel truss railway bridge, sometimes known as the Charing Cross Bridge, flanked by two cable-stayed pedestrian bridges that share the railway bridge's foundation piers, and which are properly named the Golden Jubilee Bridges. The south end of the bridge is near Waterloo station, County Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and the London Eye. The north end is near Embankment tube station, Charing Cross railway station and the Victoria Embankment.
Hungerford Bridge was originally designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1845 as a suspension footbridge. In 1859 it was bought to extend the South Eastern Railway into the newly opened Charing Cross railway station. The railway company replaced the suspension bridge with a structure designed by Sir John Hawkshaw, comprising nine spans made of wrought iron lattice girders. The chains from the old bridge were re-used in Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge. The original brick Pile Buttresses of Brunel's FootBridge are still in use, though the one on the Charing Cross side is now much closer to the River Bank than it was originally, due to the building of the Victoria Embankment, completed in 1870. The Buttress on the South Bank side still has the entrances and steps from the original Steamer Pier Brunel built on to the Footbridge.
Walkways were added on each side, with the upstream one later being removed when the railway was widened. In 1951 another walkway was temporarily added when an Army Bailey bridge was constructed for the Festival of Britain. In 1980 a temporary walkway was erected on the upstream side whilst the downstream railway bridge and walkway were refurbished. It is only one of three bridges in London to combine pedestrian and rail use; the others being the Fulham Railway Bridge and Barnes Railway Bridge.
The footbridge gained a reputation for being narrow, dilapidated and dangerous at night. In the mid-1990s a decision was made to replace the footbridge with new structures on either side of the existing railway bridge, and a competition was held in 1996 for a new design. The concept design was won by architects Lifschutz Davidson and engineers WSP Group. Detailed design of the two bridges was carried out by Consulting Engineers Gifford, and the two new 4-metre wide footbridges were completed in 2002. They were named the Golden Jubilee Bridges, in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession, although in practice they are still referred to as the "Hungerford Footbridges".
Further justification for new footbridge structures both upstream and downstream of the railway bridge was that the railway bridge's brittle wrought iron support pillars were vulnerable to impact from riverboats. Following the Marchioness disaster it was felt these should be clad in concrete at water level but the bridge's owners, Railtrack, could not afford the work. The Golden Jubilee Bridges achieved this protection at no cost to Railtrack.
The new footbridges construction was complicated by the need to keep the existing railway bridge operating without interruptions. There was also the problem of the Bakerloo Line tunnels passing only a few feet under the river bed as well as the potential danger of unexploded bombs lurking in the Thames mud. The 300m-long decks were raised using an innovative method called incremental launching, in which each 50m-long section was pulled across the river using a 250m-long steel truss weighing 300 tonnes. This process was repeated five times until each deck spanned the river, supported by six temporary piers made of steel and concrete. The seven 25-tonne pylons were then raised over the subsequent two weeks. Once the pylons had been installed, the decks were jacked up to enable their connection with the cable stays suspended from the pylons. The concrete deck was then lowered into its final position and the temporary piers and supports were dismantled.
Each of the two decks is supported by inclined outward-leaning pylons. The decks are suspended from fans of slender steel rods called deck stays — there are 180 on each deck, made up of over 4 km of cable — and are held in position by other rods called back stays. Because the pylons lean, the back stays are under tension. The deck is secured in place by steel collars fitted around (although not supported by) the pillars of the railway bridge; the collars are themselves attached to the bridge's foundations by tie-down rods. The entire structure is thus held in place by exploiting the tensions between the pylons and the various stay rods and struts.
The new bridges won the Specialist category in the Royal Fine Art Commission Building of the Year Award in 2003. It gained a Structural Achievement Award commendation in the 2004 Institution of Structural Engineers awards, and has won awards from the Civic Trust and for its lighting design.
The Embassy of Sierra Leone located at 1701 19th Street, N.W., in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Built in 1917 to the designs of noted architect Jules Henri de Sibour, the 21-room, Beaux-Arts style former private residence is designated as a contributing property to the Dupont Circle Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Former occupants include Senator, Secretary of State, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Frank B. Kellogg, Assistant Secretary of State Joseph P. Cotton, philanthropist and diplomat Myron C. Taylor, and the United Nations Club.

The after-party of the 2012 DC No Pants Metro Ride, an off-shoot of Improv Everywhere's own. This was DC's fifth year, contrasting with NYC's 11th of the annual event.
The guy just right of the door had put on his pants upon leaving the Metro station but quickly reverted back as he realised that even outside the Metro system: those wearing pants were in the minority at the after-party.

Paimpol est une commune française située dans le département des Côtes-d'Armor en région Bretagne. L'actuelle commune de Paimpol résulte de la fusion, le 26 novembre 1960, des communes de Paimpol, Plounez et Kérity. Les habitants de Paimpol sont les Paimpolaises et Paimpolais. La commune est située dans la partie septentrionale de la Bretagne au fond de la baie de Paimpol. Construite autour de ses bassins, Paimpol est l'un des principaux ports de pêche et de plaisance donnant sur la Manche. Paimpol est un port côtier au nord du département des Côtes-d'Armor. La ville est traversée par un ruisseau, le Quinic, qui se jette dans la Manche au niveau du port de plaisance. Saint-Brieuc, la préfecture du département se situe à 40 km au sud-est, et Lannion, à 35 km à l'ouest.
Nom de Paimpol en breton: d’après Hervé Abalain (2000) Penpol en 1184, Penpul en 1198 ; Paimpol est la forme francisée de penn poull: l’extrémité de l’étendue d’eau. Mais Pempoull a cependant été retenu. L’histoire de Paimpol est liée à un étang, dont Paimpol était l’une des deux extrémités, du côté de Kérity, l’autre étant située à Plounez. La région de Paimpol montre que la Bretagne était autrefois une terre de volcans. À la pointe de Guilben, des roches sombres s'avancent dans la mer. Ce sont ici des pillow lavas (laves en coussins) qui témoignent d'un volcanisme sous-marin très ancien. Les spilites qui constituent la masse des pillows renferment des blocs de cornaline rouge. Un peu au nord, la butte de Kerroc'h offre une vue imprenable sur la baie. La tour qui la surmonte a été construite en partie en rhyolite rouge violacé: une lave récupérée un peu plus bas sur le rivage. En contrebas de la tour, en effet, on trouve les traces d'un autre volcanisme paimpolais. Ici, la roche renferme des fiammes formées à la suite d'une nuée ardente. De l'autre côté de Paimpol, au sud vers Sainte-Barbe, se trouvent les volcanites de Plouézec.

Tourist attraction in Bartow County, Georgia. Old Car City in White, Georgia contains the worlds largest known classic car junkyard & is a unique landscape of metal and moss. Visitors enjoy the beautiful vegetation of the deep south that is intertwined with the hundreds of cars that reside in Old Car City.
Old Car City started as a small general store in 1931 during the Great Depression, Old Car City gradually evolved into a very big, very old automobile junkyard. But it wasn't until 2009 that owner Dean Lewis -- who grew up on the property -- realized he could turn it into a tourist attraction because a lot of people shared his love of decomposing automotive carcasses. It is still family owned and operated. 34 acres of forest and fields filled with 4,000 old cars (1972 and older) weathered and deteriorating old American cars. It has more than 6.5 miles of trails on 34 acres. Located about 45 minutes north of Atlanta in White, Georgia, is a cross between a junkyard and an outdoor car museum.
Come enjoy the Old South environment, folk art, ghosts of beautiful classic cars, and much more! With over 34 acres and over 4000 American-made cars from the early 20th Century, these cars, trucks, vans, and even a couple school buses are placed in such a way as to be ideally suited for photos, videos and custom camera shoots. Over the 8 decades since first started, thousands of photographers, videographers, ad agencies and media companies have visited Old Car City USA. Popular news magazine and newspaper companies, like CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times, the BBC and Georgia Public Television, have made press releases and/or video segments and transmitted it worldwide. Who knew that Old Car City USA, a place where junk cars go to live out the rest of their existence, would be such a fascinating stop.
Mayor of Old Car City USA, Dean Lewis, welcomes all who come out to visit his varied collection of automobile art with a little help from Mother Nature. You can come and just stroll along with winding paths for a nominal fee or, for a few dollars more, bring a camera and take pictures and/or videos and share them with friends. Among the many cars at Old Car City USA, there is the last car Elvis Presley ever bought back in 1977 just a couple months before he died. Also, a movie starring Andy Griffith and Johnny Cash used one of the cars that now call this place "home." The honorary mayor of the "City," Dean Lewis, is also an artist in his own rite with some of the most unique canvas . . . the styrofoam cup. In his upstairs loft, Lewis has hundreds of styrofoam canvases featuring his artistic talents on display along with some paintings he will proudly show off.

The Golden Ratio informs a lot of my art and photographic composition. The Golden Ratio also informs the design of the golden revolver on all the swimsuits and lingerie, as well as the 45surf logo! Not so long ago, I came up with the Golden Ratio Principle which describes why The Golden Ratio is so beautiful.
The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

Hogg takes command of U.S. Army Africa

VICENZA, Italy – During a ceremony today at Caserma Ederle’s Hoekstra Field, Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg assumed command of U.S. Army Africa.
Gen. William E. Ward, commanding general of U.S. Africa Command presided over the ceremony, which signaled the departure of outgoing commander, Maj. Gen. William B. Garrett III.
Hogg, who recently served as deputy commanding general of Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, said he is delighted to become part of the Vicenza military community.
“After 29 years of service and six overseas assignments to include Germany, Panama and Belgium, this is our first opportunity to be in Italy,” Hogg said. “We are absolutely thrilled to be here.”
Hogg said he is excited to be a part of U.S. Army Africa, the Army's newest service component command, challenged with developing relationships with land forces in Africa and supporting U.S. Army efforts on the African continent.
Ward reminded the crowd that U.S. Army Africa has accomplished some great things since Dec. 2008, when it began its transformation to becoming the Army service component command for U.S. Africa Command.
“In that short time, the command has formed, grown, and matured into an active and effective outfit and has established strong strategic relationships with the ground forces in Africa,” Ward said. “U.S. Army Africa not only succeeded, they excelled. In fact, they thrived on the opportunities they were given.”
Garrett took command of the Southern European Task Force in 2008. He commanded SETAF throughout its transformation to U.S. Army Africa. Garrett now heads to Iraq, where he will serve as the chief of staff, U.S. Forces Iraq.
“We look forward to building upon the systems that Maj. Gen. Garrett and Mrs. Garrett have developed,” Hogg said. “We are truly thankful for the warm welcome that we have received from the community and, especially, the Garretts.”

The Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) of Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York – This unique sea-dwelling rabbit, which is actually a close relative of the sea lion, was officially discovered and investigated by Henry Hudson when he first visited this land to colonize the area by order of the Dutch government. It was named New Amsterdam -- today’s New York City. This island was named after he saw the beach covered with strange swimming wild rabbits. The word “Coney Island” means “wild rabbit island” in Dutch (originally Conyne Eylandt, or Konijneneiland in modern Dutch spelling). Sea rabbits were also referred mermaid rabbit, merrabbit, rabbit fish or seal rabbit in the natural history documents in the 17th century. The current conservation status, or risk of extinction, of the sea rabbit is Extinct in the Wild.
This website features two species of sea rabbits, which have been taken care of by Dr. Takeshi Yamada (山田武司) at the Coney Island Sea Rabbit Repopulation Center, which is a part of the Marine biology department of the Coney Island University in Brooklyn, New York. They are – Coney Island Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) called “Seara” and Coney Island Tiger-striped Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus konjinicus) called “Stripes”.
The photographs and videos featured in this website chronicle adventures of the Coney Island sea rabbits and the world as seen by them. This article also documented efforts of Dr. Takeshi Yamada for bringing back the nearly extinct sea rabbits to Coney Island in the City of New York and beyond. Dr. Yamada produced a series of public lectures, workshops, original public live interactive fine art performances and fine art exhibitions about sea rabbits at a variety of occasions and institutions in the City of New York and beyond. Dr. Yamada is an internationally active educator, book author, wildlife conservationist and high profile artist, who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Origin: Atlantic coast of the United States
Description of the specimen: In the early 17th century’s European fur craze drove the fleet of Dutch ships to the eastern costal area of America. Then Holland was the center of the world just like the Italy was in the previous century. New York City was once called New Amsterdam when Dutch merchants landed and established colonies. Among them, Henry Hudson is probably the most recognized individual in the history of New York City today. “This small island is inhabited by two major creatures which we do not have in our homeland. The one creature is a large arthropod made of three body segments: the frontal segment resembles a horseshoe, the middle segment resembles a spiny crab and its tail resembles a sharp sword. Although they gather beaches here in great numbers, they are not edible due to their extremely offensive odor. Another creature which is abundant here, has the head of wild rabbit. This animal of great swimming ability has frontal legs resemble the webbed feet of a duck. The bottom half of the body resembles that of a seal. This docile rabbit of the sea is easy to catch as it does not fear people. The larger male sea rabbits control harems of 20 to 25 females. The meat of the sea rabbit is very tender and tasty.” This is what Hadson wrote in his personal journal in 1609 about the horseshoe crab and the sea rabbit in today’s Coney Island area of Brooklyn, New York. Sadly, just like the Dodo bird and the Thylacine, the sea rabbit was driven to extinction by the European settlers’ greed. When Dutch merchants and traders arrived here, sea rabbits were one of the first animals they hunted down to bring their furs to homeland to satisfy the fur craze of the time. To increase the shipment volume of furs of sea rabbit and beavers from New Amsterdam, Dutch merchants also started using wampum (beads made of special clam shells) as the first official currency of this country.
At the North Eastern shores of the United States, two species of sea rabbits were commonly found. They are Coney Island Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus americanus) and Coney Island Tiger-striped Sea Rabbit (Monafluffchus konjinicus). Sadly, due to their over harvesting in the previous centuries, their conservation status became “Extinct in the Wild” (ET) in the Red List Endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Currently, these sea rabbits are only found at breeding centers at selected zoos and universities such as Coney Island Aquarium and Coney Island University in Brooklyn, New York. The one shown in this photograph was named "Seara" and has been cared by Dr. Takeshi Yamada at Coney Island University.
The sea rabbit is one of the families of the Pinniped order. Pinnipeds (from Latin penna = flat and pes/pedis = foot) are sea-mammals: they are homeothermic (i.e having high and regulated inner temperature), lung-breathing (i.e dependant on atmospheric oxygen) animals having come back to semi aquatic life. As soon as they arrive ashore, females are caught by the nearest adult male. Males can maintain harems of about 20 females on average. Several hours to several days after arriving ashore, pregnant females give birth to eight to ten pups with a dark brown fur. As soon as birth occurs, the mother’s special smell and calls help her pups bond specifically to her. The mother stays ashore with her pup for about one week during which the pup gains weight. During the first week spent with her newborn, the mother becomes receptive. She will be impregnated by the bull, which control the harem. Implantation of the embryo will occur 3 months later, in March-April. During the reproductive period, the best males copulate with several tens females. To do so, males have to stay ashore without feeding in order to keep their territory and their harem. In mid-January, when the last females have been fecundated, males leave at sea to feed. Some of them will come back later in March-April for the moult. The other ones will stay at sea and will come back on Coney Island only in next November. After fecundation, the mother goes at sea for her first meal. At sea, mothers feed on clams, crabs, shrimps, fish (herring, anchovy, Pollock, capelin etc.) and squids. When she is back, the mother recovers her pups at the beach she left them. Suckling occurs after auditive and olfactory recognition had occured. In March-April, the dark brown fur is totally replaced by an adult-like light brownish grey fur during the moult that lasts 1-2 months. This new fur is composed by 2 layers. Externally, the guard fur is composed by flat hairs that recover themselves when wet. By doing so, they make a water-proof barrier for the under fur. The underfur retains air when the seal is dry. Because of isolating properties of the air, the underfur is the insulating system of the fur. In March-April, the fur of adults is partially replaced. First reproduction occurs at 1-yr old in females. Males are physiologically matures at 1 year old but socially matures at +2 years old.
NOTE: The name of Coney Island is commonly thought to be derived from the Dutch Konijn Eylandt or Rabbit Island as apparently the 17th century European settlers noted many rabbits running amuck on the island.

This image was scanned from a postcard in an album belonging to Francis Richard (Frank) Moore (1878-1964), whose family was based at Bishop's Bridge near Maitland, New South Wales at the time the postcard was sent. Mr Moore was a teacher who taught in schools in northern NSW and in Sydney. The postcards were collected at the turn of the twentieth century.
After Mr Moore's death, the album passed to his sister, Eliza Jane Keily, née Moore (1890-1968). The image is published here with permission of the family.

Description
The property within boundaries of District of Koycegiz is located in the face of Dalyan City and on the right shores of Dalyan Stream (Calbis) which connect Koycegiz Lake to Mediterranean. It was the capital of the ‘Kaunos Region’ between the Caria and Lycia until the beginning of the 4th BC.
The existence of Kaunos had known by the scholars but its location was a mystery until English archaeologist Hoskyn discovered it in 1842. Swedish archaeologist P. Roos defined the independent state boundaries of Kaunos as follows: “Starting from the Fethiye Bay at the north and Ancient City of Krya at the north of the bay; extending till Tlos at the 35 km east of Fethiye, Idyma at Gokova Bay at the west and Çamkoy located in the west of Urla which is little forward to north.” In today’s context, the coastal area starting from the south plains of Mugla and extending till the mountains between Mugla and Antalya was under the sovereignty of Kaunos. Kaunos has kept this borders until the 4th century BC but then lost its statue of sovereign state after the Persian invasion. It was one of two cities resisting against Persian invasion (other is Xanthos) such that they paid high taxes to prevailing states many times in order to keep their independency as a port city.
Kaunos was mentioned as Ksibde in Lycian scripts, while as Kbid in the scripts of other surrounding cities. Life style and language of Kaunos people share similarities with Carian people except five letters in their alphabet are not seen in latter which makes Kaunos language is unique to them. Heredot reveals in this respect that “There is Carian influence in their language or their influence in Carian language. This is an issue which I couldn’t clarify.” In fact, epigraphic materials in Carian language are found mostly in Kaunos today. Kaunosian could not be understood until very recently just because Carian language was not decoded. However, by virtue of a stela written in Greek and Carian, it has been possible to unravel Carian language and a little of Kaunosian due to Greek language had already been known.
Kaunos was an important sea port city with two ports; one is in the south at the southeast of Küçük Kale (Small Castle) and the inner port at its northwest, the present Sülüklü Göl (the Lake of the Leeches). The southern port was used from the foundation of the city till roughly the end of the Hellenistic era, after which it became inaccessible due to its drying out. The latter was used till the late days of Kaunos, but due to the silting of the delta and the ports, Kaunos had by then lost its important function as a trade port and started becoming poor. After Caria had been captured by Turkish tribes and the serious malaria epidemic of the 15th century AD, Kaunos was completely abandoned.
The city was constructed on terraces; significant religious structures like Baselius Kaunios Temple, Apollon Sanctuary and Demeter Sacred Rocks on one side and Bath, Theatre and other structures including Palaestra on a large terrace which is called Upper City on the other. The monumental terrace on which the Upper City situated connects Baliklar Mountain with the Acropolis by extending the city into Mediterranean like a tongue and naturally creating a second harbour basin in the east.
In many places in the ancient city, it has been found stone cutlery and arrowheads from Palaeolithic era. The finding and remains in Kaunos reveal the prosperity of the city as a great power of its time and that it was a sovereign state which minted on its behalf. The coins printed in this region especially in the first half of the 5th century BC are of great importance since a winged figure is displayed on the front side while pyramidal formed monoliths on the back. Besides, letters of K and B found on the coins are important due to they are the first two letters of the first name of Kaunos, Kbid.
The oldest find at the Kaunos archaeological site is the neck of a Protogeometric amphora dating back to the 9th century BC, or even earlier. A statue found at the western gate of the city walls, pieces of imported Attic ceramics and the South – Southeast oriented city walls show habitation in the 6th century BC. Although none of the architectural finds at Kaunos itself dates back to earlier than the 4th century BC, history of Kaunos is believed much earlier than that.
Because of the paleogeographic formation of Dalyan Delta and the silting of the former Bay of Dalyan (from approx. 200 BC onwards), Kaunos is now located about 8 km from the coast.
