This week’s picture shows spectacular ribbons of gas and dust wrapping around the pearly centre of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1398. This galaxy is located in the constellation of Fornax (The Furnace), approximately 65 million light-years away. Rather than beginning at the very middle of the galaxy and swirling outwards, NGC 1398’s graceful spiral arms stem from a straight bar, formed of stars, that cuts through the galaxy’s central region. Most spiral galaxies — around two thirds — are observed to have this feature, but it’s not yet clear whether or how these bars affect a galaxy’s behaviour and development. This image comprises data gathered by the FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS2) instrument, mounted on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory, Chile. It shows NGC 1398 in striking detail, from the dark lanes of dust mottling its spiral arms, through to the pink-hued star-forming regions sprinkled throughout its outer regions. This image was created as part of the ESO Cosmic Gems programme, an outreach initiative to produce images of interesting, intriguing or visually attractive objects using ESO telescopes, for the purposes of education and public outreach. The programme makes use of telescope time that cannot be used for science observations. All data collected may also be suitable for scientific purposes, and are made available to astronomers through ESO’s science archive.

Excerpt from www.visitourchina.com/macao/attraction/lou-lim-ieoc-garde...:
Chinese name:
Location: Estrada de Adolfo Loureiro, in northern Macau Peninsular, Macau.
Located in the middle of Macau Peninsular at the northern foot of Guia Hill, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden (in Portuguese: Jardim Lou Lim Ieoc) covers an area of 1.78 hectares with scenic landscapes. This elegant garden was modeled after Suzhou Lion Grove Garden, one of the four most famous classic gardens in Suzhou, being the only one with Suzhou classical garden style in Macau. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was once named "Entertainment Garden" and hailed as one of three famous gardens of Macau many years ago. And in 1992, it was rated as one of Macau’s eights sights. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is a great place for sightseeing as it has quaint moon gate, shady walkways, grotesque rocks of man-made hills, bamboo groves, towering banyan tress, winding corridors, elegant pavilions, spattering waterfalls, ponds with green lotus, etc. The waterside pavilion is the centerpiece of Lou Lim leoc Garden. Despite it is a traditional Chinese architecture, some western architectural elements are embedded in, such as the external wall painted in light yellow, the favorite color of Portuguese, gothic porticoes, white European-style carvings at the top of porticoes. The barrier close to the pond is painted red, China’s favorite color. This building reflects the fusion of oriental and western cultures.
It was initially a vegetable plot and was purchased by a Macau Turpan, whose son Lou Lim leoc spent a large sum of money to convert it into a private garden. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was the largest private garden in Macau. The construction started 1904 and took 21 years to finish. The garden was changed hand due to the Lu family’s bankruptcy, until it was purchased by Macau government in 1970s. After renovation it was opened to the public in 1974. At the turn of 21st century, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was famed as the show place of Cantonese opera. Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of Chinese democratic revolution, once stayed in this garden to meet celebrities of China, Macau and Portugal, and revolutionists.
Bước cùng tôi - Bụi là lá la
Bước cùng tôi
1st verse:
Outro:
…Bởi vì tôi là…ước mơ của bạn…và thế giới đẹp đẽ của tôi…cũng nằm trong ánh mắt bạn…trái đất đang gào tên bạn…sự thật đang thét tên bạn…hãy bước cùng tôi đi…hãy bước cùng Bụi đi …

/*bm------ End Plurk Creature Removal ------bm*/
Today I visited Strokestown House, Co. Roscommon.
I had planned an exterior shoot of the Strokestown area for a particular project and left blue sky in Boyle. However, half way to Strokestown, the cloud decended and bleached my beautiful sky! My proposed shots needed a rich blue sky - not gonna happen today. Rather than be content with a wasted journey, I thought on my feet and put some energy into an interior project instead, this turned out to be Strokestown House.
If you have not yet visited this place - you should. I found the staff extremely helpful and accommodating. I am grateful to Catherine, John and Ronan for their help. I was allowed to photograph as much as I pleased in all public-access areas. I didn't go mad though, I focused on 'light illuminating the interior'. It took me almost two hours to take eight shots.
Interiors can be difficult to shoot if you wish to convey the natural beauty of window light. Straight off - it is next to impossible to achieve without multiple exposures.
I usually spend a bit of time looking first, camera hand held - standing, eye-level, squat, even sometimes lie on the floor. What lens to use. Get it right in the frame, verticals/horizontals - are they parallel to the edges of the frame, what is the subject here ... details.
Once I've found my spot, I get the tripod and compose the shot, I have no problem (where possible) moving objects to different positions within the frame to get what I want. Then its camera settings. I always shoot in RAW.
For this shot; ISO 100. White Balance Cloudy (there was zero colour adjustment made to this image during processing). Aperture set to f/16 for sharpness all the way through. For the lens I was using (Nikkor 17-55mm 2.8G) I find best performance at f/16 or 18 aperture not at f/22 as you might expect. I used a cable release and set the camera 'mirror-lock to 'up' position to avoid camera shake. Finally, I experiment with shutter speed settings to determine the exposure for Highlights (so as to retain detail in the bright window) - 0.6seconds. I subsequently took three more exposures to cover mid-tones and shadows - 1.6, 3.0 and 5.0 seconds. Bang, bang, bang. Ya, ya, I know, sounds painful but believe me, if you want to learn about your camera you need to experiment. If you don't want to spend ages fixing mistakes in Photoshop, try getting in right in the camera as much as possible.
In CS2, the RAW files were processed for tone and contrast only. Layers were blended and the image finished with a mild touch of sharpening using a high-pass filter.
Soonest Mended
BY JOHN ASHBERY
Barely tolerated, living on the margin
In our technological society, we were always having to be rescued
On the brink of destruction, like heroines in Orlando Furioso
Before it was time to start all over again.
There would be thunder in the bushes, a rustling of coils,
And Angelica, in the Ingres painting, was considering
The colorful but small monster near her toe, as though wondering whether forgetting
The whole thing might not, in the end, be the only solution.
And then there always came a time when
Happy Hooligan in his rusted green automobile
Came plowing down the course, just to make sure everything was O.K.,
Only by that time we were in another chapter and confused
About how to receive this latest piece of information.
Was it information? Weren’t we rather acting this out
For someone else’s benefit, thoughts in a mind
With room enough and to spare for our little problems (so they began to seem),
Our daily quandary about food and the rent and bills to be paid?
To reduce all this to a small variant,
To step free at last, minuscule on the gigantic plateau—
This was our ambition: to be small and clear and free.
Alas, the summer’s energy wanes quickly,
A moment and it is gone. And no longer
May we make the necessary arrangements, simple as they are.
Our star was brighter perhaps when it had water in it.
Now there is no question even of that, but only
Of holding on to the hard earth so as not to get thrown off,
With an occasional dream, a vision: a robin flies across
The upper corner of the window, you brush your hair away
And cannot quite see, or a wound will flash
Against the sweet faces of the others, something like:
This is what you wanted to hear, so why
Did you think of listening to something else? We are all talkers
It is true, but underneath the talk lies
The moving and not wanting to be moved, the loose
Meaning, untidy and simple like a threshing floor.
These then were some hazards of the course,
Yet though we knew the course was hazards and nothing else
It was still a shock when, almost a quarter of a century later,
The clarity of the rules dawned on you for the first time.
They were the players, and we who had struggled at the game
Were merely spectators, though subject to its vicissitudes
And moving with it out of the tearful stadium, borne on shoulders, at last.
Night after night this message returns, repeated
In the flickering bulbs of the sky, raised past us, taken away from us,
Yet ours over and over until the end that is past truth,
The being of our sentences, in the climate that fostered them,
Not ours to own, like a book, but to be with, and sometimes
To be without, alone and desperate.
But the fantasy makes it ours, a kind of fence-sitting
Raised to the level of an esthetic ideal. These were moments, years,
Solid with reality, faces, namable events, kisses, heroic acts,
But like the friendly beginning of a geometrical progression
Not too reassuring, as though meaning could be cast aside some day
When it had been outgrown. Better, you said, to stay cowering
Like this in the early lessons, since the promise of learning
Is a delusion, and I agreed, adding that
Tomorrow would alter the sense of what had already been learned,
That the learning process is extended in this way, so that from this standpoint
None of us ever graduates from college,
For time is an emulsion, and probably thinking not to grow up
Is the brightest kind of maturity for us, right now at any rate.
And you see, both of us were right, though nothing
Has somehow come to nothing; the avatars
Of our conforming to the rules and living
Around the home have made—well, in a sense, “good citizens” of us,
Brushing the teeth and all that, and learning to accept
The charity of the hard moments as they are doled out,
For this is action, this not being sure, this careless
Preparing, sowing the seeds crooked in the furrow,
Making ready to forget, and always coming back
To the mooring of starting out, that day so long ago.

On all our tours I encourage our guests to also shoot verticals, not only horizontals. Magazines for instance, are all based on verticals, so if you ever want your picture to grace the cover or to be published on a full page, you'll need to shoot verticals as well.
A little while back I got an email from British Airways, asking whether I had a vertical version of my famous picture The Edge, of an elephant at Victoria Falls. And as a matter of fact I did, I just never processed it. When I started processing the image, I wondered why I hadn't done it earlier - the vertical version seems to make more sense because you can actually see the height of the falls and you can see all the water falling down.
Anyway, British Airways published the shot and I was happy they had given me a good reason to dive into my image library again.
Here's the background story that I wrote for the horizontal version:
-
It's hard enough to make original pictures, but with some subjects it simply borders the impossible.
When I was at Victoria Falls last year, I thought about the billions of photographs that must have been taken there, and I almost decided to just visit the place without my camera. That was until I spoke with some of the local people, who told me that they had seen a bull elephant crossing the Zambezi river the day before. During my research I had not seen any images of the falls with an elephant in it, so I decided to stay a few extra days and try my luck.
The course of the Zambezi is dotted with numerous tree-covered islands, which increase in number as the river approaches the falls. As the dry season takes effect, the islets on the crest become wider and more numerous, and with the water level of the Zambezi dropping, once submerged walkways and fresh foraging possibilities present themselves. This elephant was apparently aware of this.
On the third day I left very early with a small boat to reach my location. On my way to the edge I suddenly saw the lone bull wading through shallow parts of the river, but it was far away and light levels were low, so I decided to continue to the falls. I took some sunrise shots and half an hour later I saw the elephant approaching the falls. I quickly collected my gear and moved carefully towards the edge where the water plummeted into a 360ft chasm - not particularly nice when you're afraid of heights... I set everything up in order to include as much as possible of the falls and made a composition. Luckily the elephant was aware of my preference to shoot into the light, so his position couldn't be better.
After I took the shots, I knew I had just witnessed and captured something very special. Later that day local people confirmed this by telling me that they had never seen an elephant so close to the edge of the falls before - exactly what I wanted to hear!
This image was featured as a double page spread in National Geographic, and won First Prize in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards.

Kowloon Union Church, one of the earliest inter-denominational churches in Hong Kong, was built by the London Missionary Society with financial support from Sir Paul Chater. The foundation stone was laid on 27 May 1930 by the then Colonial Secretary, W.T. Southorn, and the church was officially opened on 10 April 1931 by the then Governor Sir William Peel. During the Japanese Occupation, the church ceased to function and the building was converted into a horse stable by the Japanese army and suffered severe looting and damage. The church was opened again for public worship with a rededication service held on 19 October 1947 and continues to serve the community until now.
The church possesses “Perpendicular Gothic” architectural features, with pitched Chinese-tiled roof, red load-bearing brick walls and contrasting grey granite steps and window surrounds. A semi-circular apse and an attached three-storey battlemented tower are built at the two ends of the church respectively.
The square battlemented tower with pointed arch doorway surround and foundation stone at the base is designed to serve as the main entrance to the church. It is of fair-face red brickwork with carved granite ornaments and trimmings. There is also a concrete flat roof topped with a crenelated low parapet wall.
The windows of the church are set in decorative granite framing in the form of trefoil-headed tracery. The window frames are of wrought-iron and there are angular carved hoods above the windows. The windows of top floor of the battlemented tower are with stone louvers. The elegant double hammer-beam timber roof trusses with carved granite corbel supports are a rare and dominant feature of the spacious interior of the main hall of the church.
Kowloon Union Church was declared a monument in 2017.

Namtso is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet and significant for Tibetan Buddhists. Kora is a Tibetan word that means "circumambulation" or "revolution". Kora is both a type of pilgrimage and a type of meditative practice in the Tibetan Buddhism. Thus, Namtso Kora means pilgrimage walk around the Lake Namtso.
Namtso literally means heavenly lake in Tibetan language. Located around 240km northwest of Lhasa, capital of Tibet, it takes four hours’ driving from Lhasa. Extending 70 km from east to west and 30 km from south to north, the lake covers an area of 1,920 sq km and has an altitude of 4748 m above sea level. It is biggest lake in Tibet and the second biggest salt lake in China as well as one of the highest lakes in the world. The water in the lake is crystally clear and blue. The blue sky joins the surface of the lake in the distance, creating an integrated, scenic vista.
In every Tibetan year of sheep, thousands of Tibetan Buddhism believers will come here to worship this sacred lake. As a rule, they will walk clockwise along the Namtso Lake in order to receive the blessing of the gods.
There are several fine Tibet treks around the lake. The shortest one is roughly 4 kilometers and takes less than one hour. It starts from the accommodation area to a hermit’s cave hidden behind a large spinter of rock. The kora continues to a rocky promontory of cairns and prayer flags. At the promontory, pilgrims undertake a ritural washing in the lake. And then the trail continues past several caves and a prostration point where there are two rock towers looking like two hands. Pilgrims squeeze into the deep slices of the nearby cliff face as a means of sin detection or drink water dripping from cave roofs, even swallow holy dirt.

The Pearle Hotel and Spa announced today it will open on Burlington's vibrant waterfront (3 Elizabeth Street) on November 1st, 2021.
The urban retreat just steps from Lake Ontario is designed by the award-winning design firm Studio Munge and emulates a modern lake house with elegant white oak panelling, tranquil views of the lake and the heart of downtown. Through thoughtful design, the 151 guest rooms and all public spaces reflect the richness of the changing Canadian seasons.
